Abstract

Integrating local culture into language learning is a practical approach to enhancing students' writing skills while promoting positive character values and cultural identity. This study focuses on the utilisation and strengthening of character through digital media in learning to write descriptive texts by highlighting the Malay maritime tradition of the jong boat race as contextual learning material for elementary school students. The purpose of this study is to develop descriptive text writing competencies that incorporate traditional Malay culture, modern technology, and the principles of meaningful learning, thereby fostering the connection between new knowledge and students' existing experiences and knowledge. The method employed is a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative approach uses a pre-experimental one-class pretest-posttest design to measure the improvement of writing skills before and after learning. The qualitative approach is carried out through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation to explore the experiences and responses of students and teachers. Digital media, including photos, short videos, and presentation applications, are used to help students observe, analyse, and describe the characteristics, materials, and processes of the Jong Boat Race. The results indicate that integrating cultural elements supported by digital visual sources and meaningful learning strategies can enhance students' descriptive vocabulary, sentence structure, emotional engagement, and depth of understanding. Furthermore, this approach encourages students to appreciate and preserve Malay maritime traditions, thereby enabling language learning to be integrated with cultural education. The study concluded that technology-enabled culture-based learning not only enriches students' language skills but also strengthens cultural awareness, making it a relevant and sustainable strategy for language education at the primary school level.

Abstract

The implementation of the Independent Curriculum demands a transformation of the mathematics learning paradigm that emphasizes contextual experience through a problem-solving approach. The low motivation to learn mathematics of SMA Negeri 1 Lingga students, especially in statistics materials with achievements below the KKM (42.86% of students complete), indicates the need for innovative learning strategies that are relevant to the local context. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) based on maritime contextual problems in Lingga Regency in increasing the motivation to learn mathematics of grade X.1 students. The research method used the Kemmis and McTaggart model Classroom Action Research with two learning cycles over three weeks, involving 37 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a learning motivation questionnaire based on five indicators with a four-point Likert scale, then analyzed quantitatively descriptively. The results showed a significant increase in motivation scores from 3,249 (medium category) in the first cycle to 3,784 (high category) in the second cycle with an increase of 0.355 points. The contextualization of maritime issues using real data on sea transportation, fishermen's activities, and trade in marine products has succeeded in creating an authentic learning experience that bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications. In conclusion, PBL based on the maritime context is effective in increasing students' learning motivation by transforming active participation, presentation courage, and development of independence. It is recommended that the systematic implementation of local context PBL as an alternative learning to increase student involvement in mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of learning interest in mathematics among tenth-grade students and aimed to analyze the effect of integrating Problem-Based Learning (PBL) with the kinesthetic game Walking Marker, accompanied by music, on students’ interest in learning mathematics. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design. The participants consisted of 64 tenth-grade students from SMA Negeri 1 Bintan Timur, who were divided into an experimental group (n = 32) and a control group (n = 32). The experimental group received PBL instruction integrated with a kinesthetic game and music, while the control group was taught using conventional PBL. Students’ learning interest was measured using a validated learning interest questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. Data analysis included tests of normality, homogeneity, and an independent samples t-test. The results indicated that integrating the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model with the kinesthetic game Walking Marker, accompanied by music, significantly enhanced students’ interest in learning mathematics. This finding was supported by the results of the independent samples t-test, which revealed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups, t(62) = 9.920, p < .001, with a mean difference of 11.03 points and a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.18). This study offers novelty through the integration of PBL, a kinesthetic game, and music as an effective multimodal approach to increasing students’ interest in learning mathematics and provides practical implications for teachers in designing more engaging and meaningful learning experiences. Furthermore, this study contributes empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness and magnitude of the impact of a multimodal PBL approach on students’ learning interest in mathematics education.
