Abstract

This research explores the transformative impact of social media on political campaigns, particularly in the context of Malaysia’s 15th General Election (GE15). Social media platforms as a political campaigning tool highlight its influence on young voters and their perceptions of political figures. In addition, social media has revolutionized the dynamics of political engagement, it has also introduced challenges such as the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and unequal access among political parties. This research applied a qualitative method by comparing various literatures. Leveraging The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this study aims to analyze how social media influences election outcomes and shape public opinion. The findings reveal that social media played a significant role in GE15, with candidates strategically utilizing platforms like Facebook and TikTok to engage voters, especially the youth demographic. Ultimately, social media not only serves as a battleground for public discourse but also shapes the political landscape by reaching out to digital natives and first-time voters who rely on social media for news and information. This research contributes to the understanding of digital campaign dynamics by demonstrating how the perceived ease of use and usefulness of social media influence political campaigning. It underscores the critical role of technological acceptance in the adoption of new media strategies by political actors. By applying TAM, this study provides valuable insights into the power of social media in modern political campaigns, offering practical recommendations for political strategists and parties aiming to enhance their digital engagement and campaign effectiveness in future elections.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Paparan Media, Persepsi Publik, Teori Pembingkaian, Teori Agenda-Setting ABSTRACT This research explores media consumption as a phenomenon of significant importance by investigating the political framing theory and agenda-setting theory. The study is based on secondary data from peer-reviewed articles. It aims to analyze how media outlets' visibility, story construction, and algorithmic dominance impact political and public engagement discourse. It was found that digital exposure significantly influences how the public prioritizes issues before rendering any explanation or definition. The research highlights that visibility in contemporary society is no longer confined to journalism, as users and algorithms significantly dictate what is visible and critical, customizing the superiority of digitally presented information. The study argues that algorithmic stimulation transforms media into a powerful force operating on identity, where political scope and resources shape systematic legitimacy and public understanding of policy scope delivered through mass media. Focusing on the growing impact of algorithms and politics on social media, the research emphasizes the need for greater responsibility and integrity from the media and theoretical development to address the unregulated logic of control. Keywords: Media Exposure, Public Perception, Framing Theory, Agenda-Setting Theory

The dissemination of disinformation, exacerbated by the manipulation of social media platforms, possesses the capacity to influence public sentiment and potentially impact the outcomes of electoral processes. The present study aims to analyse the impact of fake news on public perceptions that lead to polarisation and the position of social media as a public space in determining the political agenda. The present study employs cultivation communication theory and uses and gratification to investigate the influence of social media in shaping the political agenda. Furthermore, Habermas' concept of the public sphere is employed to elucidate the influence of this sphere on social media. The research was conducted using a literature study method with thematic analysis related to the keywords social media, public sphere, political communication, and political agenda. The results indicate that individuals actively consume fake news to fulfil psychological needs. Furthermore, the strategic use of social media by political actors to spread propaganda and further their political agenda is evident. The pervasive dissemination of misinformation through social media engenders a distorted perception of political reality among users, thereby challenging the establishment of a deliberative public sphere within this digital domain. This is further compounded by the pre-established political agenda within media platforms, which is largely dictated by political actors. This research contributes to a more profound comprehension of the intricate dynamics associated with social media, in shaping public discourse and opinion in the digital age. Concurrently, the public sphere is constructed by influential political actors. Keywords: Political Agenda, Political Polarization, Public Space, Sosial Media
