Abstract

The Meratus Mountains in Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency is an area prone to natural disasters, especially landslides and floods. This is caused by steep topographic characteristics and changes in land cover due to human activities, such as deforestation and land conversion. Hinas Kanan Village, located in Hantakan Sub-district, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency, is one of the areas vulnerable to floods and landslides. The Disaster Resilient Village (DESTANA) program aims to strengthen community capacity in managing resources and maintaining local wisdom for disaster mitigation. Strengthening the role of the government in terms of resource and technical support, as well as encouraging cooperation between the government, private sector, universities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community organizations to improve community preparedness in the face of disasters. The community service team implemented this program by applying the live-in method, namely living at the program location in Hinas Kanan Village, Hantakan District, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency, during the period July to September 2024. Activities carried out to support the Desa Tanguh Bencana (DESTANA) program include disaster risk assessments, preparation of Disaster Management Plans (RPB) and Contingency Plans at the village level, socialization on disaster mitigation and hazards, identification of disaster-prone locations, and sketching disaster evacuation strategy maps. With the activities that have been carried out, this can be a step towards developing a resilient and empowered Hinas Kanan Village in terms of mitigating disasters.

Abstract

Karang Taruna plays a crucial role in enhancing the social life of the community, particularly in Hinas Kanan Village, Hantakan District. The region has seen a decline in youth engagement in improving the quality of the younger generation, especially in terms of creativity and critical thinking skills. This served as the motivation for the service team to reactivate the Karang Taruna organization to develop and enrich the youth's understanding of their contributions to sustainable development. The younger generation has the potential to maximize the role of Karang Taruna in empowering the community's social welfare. The program aims to create a beneficial atmosphere through various social activities such as organizing Focus Group Discussions on village potential, commemorating the Republic of Indonesia's anniversary with the youth, conducting joint clean-up actions, and exploring tourist attractions with the village youth. The staff team has conducted workshops to strengthen the vision of Karang Taruna with the members and village officials, fostering solidarity and social responsibility among the youth of Hinas Kanan village. This aims to encourage a more active role in community development and greater sensitivity to social issues in their environment. The research emphasizes the importance of the active role of youth in sustainable development and their involvement in decision-making for the future of the village. It can serve as a reference for youth empowerment programs in other villages facing similar challenges and aid in designing more effective and sustainable strategies.

Abstract

The agrarian conflict involving the Pitap Dayak indigenous community represents a form of resistance against the expansion of extractive corporations that threaten the sustainability of their customary lands and cultural identity. This study aims to explore the underlying factors driving the community’s defense of their territory and to describe the characteristics of their social movement in the context of agrarian conflict. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were gathered through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Manual Data Analysis Procedure (MDAP). The findings reveal that the Pitap Dayak community has successfully harmonized traditional values, such as collective solidarity, customary spirituality, and community deliberation, with modern strategies, including legal advocacy, youth leadership development, and the use of digital technology. The involvement of NGOs further enhances the movement, positioning it within the framework of new social movements that are deliberative, adaptive, and well-networked. This study demonstrates that the effectiveness of indigenous movements is not solely determined by structural constraints, but by the community’s capacity to construct collective meaning, maintain cohesion, and adapt strategically to socio-political and economic pressures. Academically, the research contributes to studies on indigenous customary law, agrarian conflict, and environmental sociology. Practically, it offers valuable insights into the resilience of indigenous communities in defending ancestral land rights and ecological stewardship. Future research is encouraged to further investigate the role of digital tools and cross-sector alliances in reinforcing the sustainability and legitimacy of indigenous movements.
