Abstract

Dietary habits in Asia, including Indonesia, are shaped by culture, tradition, and the ongoing influence of modernization. Modernization has led to a shift from traditional diets toward the consumption of processed foods high in calories, fats, and sugars, increasing the risk of degenerative diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders. These dietary changes also affect nutritional status and can influence gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms and genetic variation among individuals. This  tudy aims to examine dietary patterns in Asian populations and their implications for nutritional status and health through the lens of epigenetics, nutrigenomics, and nutrigenetics. This study employed a narrative literature review using a qualitative-descriptive approach. Scientific articles were gathered through Google Scholar in October 2024 using a combination of English and Indonesian keywords such as “eating habits in Asia”, “Asian dietary pattern”, “Indonesian food culture”, “epigenetics and nutrition”, “nutrigenomics in Asia”, and “nutrigenetics population”. The process involved four systematic steps: article identification, selection based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, data extraction, and thematic analysis based on geographic regions. The results show that culture and modernization significantly influence dietary patterns in Asia. Additionally, bioactive compounds found in traditional Asian foods have the potential to modulate gene expression, and genetic variations among populations may lead to different responses to the same dietary intake. This review highlights the importance of culturally tailored nutrition education and the need for population-based nutrigenetic research.

Abstract

Sufism has long been an integral part of Islamic intellectual and spiritual tradition, offering a path of inner purification and ethical refinement. However, throughout its historical development, Sufism has also faced critical scrutiny, especially from scholars who prioritize theological purity and strict adherence to Sharia. Among these critics, Ibn Taymiyyah stands out as a central figure who rigorously challenged various aspects of Sufism, particularly those rooted in philosophical mysticism. His criticism, however, does not represent a wholesale rejection of Sufism, but rather a call for purifying Islamic teachings from elements of bid‘ah (religious innovation), syncretism, and speculative metaphysics that deviate from core Islamic tenets. Ibn Taymiyyah draws a clear distinction between Sunni Sufism, which emphasizes piety and ethical conduct, and philosophical Sufism, which promotes mystical doctrines such as wahdat al-wujūd (unity of being), hulūl (incarnation), and ittihād (union with the divine). This article aims to explore Ibn Taymiyyah’s critical stance using historical and theological approaches, and to assess the relevance of his views in the context of contemporary Islamic discourse. This study adopts a library research method and descriptive-critical analysis of both primary sources and recent academic literature from 2018–2025. The findings indicate that Ibn Taymiyyah’s approach is more corrective than dismissive, as he still acknowledges the authenticity of Sufi figures such as Al-Junaid and Al-Fudhail ibn ‘Iyadh, who adhered strictly to Islamic law in their spiritual practices. His perspective offers a methodological foundation for maintaining balance between sound creed and legitimate spirituality in the modern era.

Abstract

Symbolic violence in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) classrooms is a subtle yet systemic form of domination, manifested through judgmental language, asymmetrical power relations between teachers and students, and the imposition of obedience without critical space. This situation weakens students’ religious reasoning and diminishes reflective spiritual awareness. This article emphasizes the urgency of adopting a humanistic approach in Islamic education, which upholds compassion, dialogue, and respect for individual potential as pedagogical foundations. The study aims to identify the forms of symbolic violence in PAI learning and explain how a humanistic approach can liberate classrooms from such domination. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, data were collected through classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students at a public junior high school in Banda Aceh, followed by thematic analysis. The findings reveal that symbolic violence persists in PAI teaching practices, yet a more humanistic strategy encourages dialogue, empathy, and critical awareness among students. The theoretical contribution of this paper lies in broadening the discourse of Islamic pedagogy toward symbolic liberation, while its practical significance offers recommendations for curriculum reform and teacher training based on humanistic ethics.
