Abstract

Urbanization is an unavoidable phenomenon that continues to occur today. The process of urbanization in Indonesia has been ongoing since its independence and continues to this day. East Kalimantan Province is one of the main destinations for urbanization. This study aims to identify the dynamics of urbanization in East Kalimantan Province. Secondary data, such as population censuses and Google Earth imagery from 2020, 2010, and 2000, were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively, and presented descriptively. The results of the study indicate that the level of urbanization in East Kalimantan varies significantly, with its peak reaching 100% in Balikpapan City and Bontang City, reflecting the disappearance of rural areas. The highest population concentrations were found in Samarinda City and Balikpapan City. This study is expected to serve as a basis for stakeholders in policy-making to harness the positive impacts of urbanization and minimize its significant negative impacts.

Abstract

Balikpapan City has experienced consistent population growth, with an increase of 19,000 residents in 2023 and an additional 4,600 people between January and March 2024. This population growth has significantly impacted land demand, particularly in East Balikpapan District, which covers an area of 137.16 km² with a population of 102,959 and a population density of 868.04 people/km². According to Balikpapan Mayor Regulation No. 22 of 2021 on the Detailed Spatial Plan (RDTR), and based on the Strategic Environmental Assessment (KLHS), a total of 630.34 hectares has been designated as water catchment zones across the sub-districts of Manggar, Manggar Baru, and Lamaru. However, the 2021–2026 Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD) of Balikpapan indicates ongoing land use mismatches due to community practices that are inconsistent with spatial allocations. The 2023 Balikpapan Environmental Protection and Management Plan (RPPLH), through the DPSIR (Driving Force–Pressure–State–Impact–Response) analysis, indicates a decline in environmental carrying capacity caused by unplanned land clearing, reduced open spaces, and the shrinking of both water catchment areas and forest zones. An analysis of water catchment potential shows a notable shift: in 2014, 74% of the area was considered less suitable; in 2019, 58% was moderately suitable; and by 2024, 86% was moderately suitable. Land use conversion predominantly occurred between 2014–2019, with 136.99 hectares changing from fields/gardens to forest, and between 2019–2024, from forest to shrubs—both within high-potential zones.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to estimate the gap between the number of available houses and the number needed by the community, often measured through the housing backlog. The housing backlog includes ownership backlog, which is the percentage of households that own their own homes; and occupancy backlog, which is the ideal condition where one house is occupied by one family. With the rapid population growth and urbanization in Indonesia, estimating housing needs becomes crucial to ensure the availability of adequate and decent housing for all segments of society. This research examines approaches that can be used to apply the Life Cycle Matrix (LCM), first introduced in Japan in the 1980s, to estimate housing needs based on changes in household life cycles, such as changes in household size and the age of the household head. The research method used is a quantitative approach with descriptive and analytical methods. The data used are secondary data, namely the Population Census Results from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS, formerly known as the Central Bureau of Statistics). The analysis stages include data availability verification and data cleaning. Then, housing backlog calculations are carried out, as well as the development of approaches that can be developed for Estimating Housing Needs for the Indonesian Community through the application of the Life Cycle Matrix.

Abstract

This study analyzes changes in land surface temperature (LST) in Pati Regency between 2017 and 2024 using Landsat 8 satellite data. The analysis results show a significant increase in surface temperature over the period, with the lowest temperature rising from 19°C to 21°C and the highest temperature rising from 39°C to 42°C. The temperature increase mainly occurred in the foothills of Mount Muria and the southern part of Pati Regency, likely influenced by land use changes and dry season conditions. Additionally, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) analysis indicates a decrease in vegetation density in most areas, contributing to the rise in surface temperature. These findings provide crucial insights for policymakers in formulating sustainable spatial planning strategies in Pati Regency.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of the revitalization of Senaken Market on traders and visitors based on aspects of revitalization, including physical, management, economic, and social aspects. The revitalization of Senaken Market, which has been ongoing since 2022, is a response to various physical problems in the market, such as damage to market buildings due to fire, squalor, and disrupted circulation within the market. This study is a mixed-method research using a quantitative survey method through the distribution of questionnaires to 100 visitors and 94 vendors. Analysis was conducted using the Likert scale scoring method to measure perceptions of the revitalization's impact, followed by a descriptive interpretation of the scoring results. The results of the study indicate that the impact of revitalization is generally perceived as positive, particularly in terms of physical aspects and some social aspects. However, in terms of economic and management aspects, several challenges remain, such as the uneven increase in vendors' income and the suboptimal empowerment of vendors by market managers.
