Abstract

Pragmatic competence refers to the ability to use language appropriately in social contexts, and is an essential part of language learning. This research investigation is focused on how technology can be potent for developing pragmatic competence in the remote learning context through the English teachers and English learners of Muhammadiyah University of West Sumatera. Fifteen purposive sample participants were selected based on their Proficiency level (Intermediate to advanced), Regular use of online learning platforms and diverse cultural backgrounds. This qualitative research conducted Semi-structured interview and Online Forum Analysis as the instruments in collecting data. This research found the roles of technology in facilitation the acquisition of Pragmatic competence in online learning are Creating authentic learning experiences, Providing explicit instruction on pragmatic norms, and Fostering meaningful interaction among learners. By leveraging technology like virtual exchange program, online discussion forum, interactive English language platform, and video conferencing, the online English language teachers can empower learners to develop the pragmatic skills necessary for effective communication in diverse cultural contexts. So, technology can be one of the tool in facilitating the acquisition of pragmatic competence through English language learning that is held online.

Abstract

This research aimed to discuss how vlog can improve students’ speaking competence. This research model is a pre-experimental research in one design group which is devided into three stages, namely pre-tes, treatment,post-test in the learning process. The sample of this reseaech was class X E2 consisting 15 students at MAN 3 Padangpanjang in academic year 2023/2024. Instruments for collecting data were pre-test and post-test through students’ performance with test and measured using an assesment rubric. The success criteria are determind on three indicators, namely grammar, pronounciation and fluency. The result of this research showed that the use of video blog (vlog) media in teaching speaking improved the students’ speaking competence well. It could be seen on the students’ mean score for each test that showed the post-test got higher after doing treatment by using vlog media than pre-test before doing treatment by using vlog media, that is 75 for post-test and 37 for pre-test. And it can be seen from the result of the hypothesis where t-count > t-table (21,11>2,145 ). The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore, it could be concluded that there is any improvement of students’ speaking competence at the first year of MAN 3 Padangpanjang by using video blog (vlog). Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti bagaiman vlog bisa meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Model penelitian ini adalah penelitian pra eksperimental dalam satu kelompok desain yang dibagi kedalam tiga tahap yaitu pre-test, treatment, dan post-test di dalam proses pembelajaran. Sample dari penelitian ini adalah kelas X E2 yang terdiri dari 15 siswa di MAN 3 Padangpanjang. Instrumen untuk mengumpulkan data adalah pre-test and post-test melalui kinerja siswa dengan tes lisan dan diukur dengan menggunakan rubrik penilaian. Kriteria keberhasilan ditentukan oleh tiga indikator, yaitu grammar, pronounciation dan fluency. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan media video blog (vlog) dalam pengajaran berbicara meningkatkan kompetensi berbicara siswa dengan baik. Hal ini dapat dilihat pada nilai rata-rata siswa untuk setiap tes yang menunjukkan post-test lebih tinggi setelah dilakukan perlakuan dengan menggunakan vlog media daripada pre-test sebelum melakukan perlakuan dengan menggunakan vlog media, yaitu 75 untuk post-test dan 37 untuk post-test. Dan dapat dilihat dari hasil hipotesis dimana t-hitung > t-tabel (21,11>2.145 ). Hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima sedangkan hipotesis nol (Ho) ditolak. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan kompetensi berbicara siswa di tahun pertama MAN 3 Padang Panjang dengan menggunakan video blog (vlog).

Abstract

Recount text is a type of text taught in English subjects at the junior high school or MTs level. This research aims to determine students' abilities in writing recount text. Data was obtained through a writing test given to students. The students' writing results were then examined by looking at five components, namely content, organization, grammar, vocabulary and mechanics. The data was then described using qualitative methods. The research results show that students' ability to write recount text is low. This can be seen from the average score between 56 and 65. This proves that students still experience difficulties in writing, so the quality of their writing is less than satisfactory. Abstrak Teks recount adalah salah satu jenis teks yang diajarkan pada mata Pelajaran Bahasa Inggris pada tingkat SMP atau MTs. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks recount. Data didapatkan melalui tes menulis yang diberikan pada siswa . Hasil menulis siswa lalu diteliti dengan  melihat lima komponen, yaitu content, organization, grammar, vocabularies dan mechanics. Data lalu diseskripsikan dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks recount adalah rendah. Ini terlihat dari perolehan nilai rata-rata antara 56 sampai dengan 65. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa siswa masih mengalami kesulitan dalam menulis, sehingga kualitas tulisannya kurang memuaskan.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy in improving the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 5 Padang Panjang. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test. The sample consisted of 20 students selected randomly from a total of 32 students. The instruments used were speaking tests (pre-test and post-test). The findings revealed that the students’ post-test scores were higher than their pre-test scores. A t-test with a degree of freedom (df) = 19 resulted in t-count = 10.78, while the t-table at the 0.05 significance level was 2.093. Since t-count t-table, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, indicating a significant difference between pre-test and post-test results. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) strategy is effective in improving students’ speaking skills at SMPN 5 Padang Panjang. Keywords : Two Stay Two Stray Strategy, Speaking Skill, Cooperative Learning Strategy

Abstract

This research has several purposes. The first wa to find out and analyze type of errors english pronunciation made by students. The next purpose was to find out the reasons for pronunciation errors. The research was conducted at English Department Students Of Muhammadiyah University Of Sumatera Barat, which involved 15 students including 4th, 6th and 8th semester. This study collected data through tests and interviews, generating qualitative information. The data was analyzed using percentages and frequencies to obtain data results. The results showed that the English department students of muhammadiyah of west sumatera made 149 errors. the types of pronunciation errors were divided into 3 types, namely, substitution, omission and insertion. pronunciation errors were divided into two indicators, namely consonant sounds and vowel sounds. Consonant has the highest frequency of substitution 56 (92%), followed by omission 4 (6%) and the lowest is insertion 1 (2%). Then in vowel sounds, the highest frequency of errors ws omission 50 (57%), followed by substitution 38 (43%) and the lowest was insertion 0 (0%). On the other hand, the reason for making the highest error was interference as many as 6 students, followed by fosizilation as many as 2 students, CA as many as 2 students and finally Markedness differential as many as 2 students.Keyword : analysis errors, pronunciation

Abstract

The issues which were explained were the student’s errors in writing recount text focused on past tense and the most significant errors found in their writing recount text focused on the past tense. This research aimed to find out the student errors in writing made by the students in a text focused on past tense and the most significant errors found in writing made by the students recount text focused on the past tense. The data and source of this research were the students’ errors in writing recount text and collected on August 19, 2022. The design of the research was qualitative descriptive. This type of qualitative descriptive research is a research method that utilizes qualitative data and is described descriptively. This type of qualitative descriptive research is often used to analyze social events, phenomena or circumstances. The participants of this research were 25 students in class XII MIPA 5. The research showed that there were 179 errors found in the writing students, consisting of nine errors on omission, 18 errors on addition, 150 errors on misformation and two errors on misordering. The research results found a dominant error in misformation with a frequency of 83,79 %. It can be concluded that the students are still confused and have a problem with writing.Keyword: Error, Writing, Recount Text
