Abstract

Technological advancements have played a vital role in redesigning the modern education system to be more adaptive, effective, and inclusive. However, despite rapid development, many educational institutions are still struggling to align with 21st-century competencies due to outdated pedagogical models. This study aims to explore the strategic role of educational technology in transforming modern educational systems, especially within the Indonesian context. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, the research is based on literature analysis of scholarly journals, policy documents, and expert opinions from the last decade. The sample consists of national and international literature relevant to educational technology integration. Findings reveal that the integration of technology in curriculum development, pedagogy, and institutional frameworks has contributed significantly to fostering critical thinking, independent learning, and mastery learning. The study also identifies key educational trends such as personalized learning, system-based approaches, and digital pedagogy. These findings underscore the significance of educational technology as a transformative force in enhancing the relevance and quality of education in the digital era.

Abstract

Islamic education aims at the holistic development of learners, encompassing cognitive, affective, and psychomotor dimensions, as well as the cultivation of faith, morality, and mental health. Zakiah Daradjat is a prominent Indonesian Islamic education scholar who introduced an integrative approach between Islamic education and the psychology of religion, particularly within the context of Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam/PAI). However, previous studies on her thought have largely remained descriptive and have not sufficiently engaged in critical analysis in relation to contemporary educational challenges. This study aims to critically analyze Zakiah Daradjat’s Islamic educational thought by examining its contributions, conceptual uniqueness, and relevance to the development of contemporary Islamic Religious Education in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach through library research, the study utilizes Daradjat’s original works as primary sources and relevant academic literature as secondary sources. Data analysis is conducted using content analysis with an emphasis on thematic and critical interpretation. The findings indicate that Zakiah Daradjat’s educational thought emphasizes a holistic, integrative, and contextual model of Islamic education grounded in the Qur’an, Sunnah, and ijtihad, and implemented synergistically across family, school, and community settings. The integration of Islamic education and the psychology of religion represents her distinctive contribution, particularly in strengthening learners’ character formation and mental health. Nevertheless, her ideas require deeper engagement with contemporary educational theories and pedagogical approaches to remain adaptive to global and digital challenges. Theoretically and practically, Zakiah Daradjat’s Islamic educational thought remains relevant as a foundation for the development of modern Islamic Religious Education, especially in addressing moral degradation and students’ mental health issues in Indonesia.

Abstract

Pluralism and tolerance in Islamic education are often debated because they can be read as an affirmation of diversity and as a shared ethic that rejects violence. This article aims to explain how pluralism and tolerance are constructed within the pesantren Islamic worldview through historical–cultural trajectories, and to derive pedagogical implications. The study employs a historical–cultural library research design and thematic content analysis of relevant literature published in including journal articles, proceedings, and policy documents. The synthesis indicates that pesantren frame plurality as a social fact (sunnatullah) to be managed through maslahah-oriented reasoning, adab al-ikhtilaf, and ethical communication; tolerance is treated as an active moral competence cultivated through kitab learning, habituation of adab, kiai role modelling, deliberation (musyawarah), and social service (khidmah). Evidence from Javanese cultural da‘wah further shows that internalising tawhid can coexist with respect for local symbols, producing adaptive religiosity without theological relativism. The article’s novelty lies in mapping the pluralism–tolerance–moderation nexus across three layers of pesantren culture: the formal curriculum, dormitory-based hidden curriculum, and socio-historical tradition.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the epistemology of Islamic education by highlighting the integration of naqli and aqli knowledge within the learning system of tahfidz Islamic boarding schools. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with caregivers, teachers, and students, participant observation, and document analysis of curricula and instructional guidelines. The data were analyzed thematically using a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings indicate that the epistemology of Islamic education is constructed upon a naqli–aqli integration that is holistic, hierarchical, and contextual. This integration is manifested through Quran memorization and classical text studies, the strengthening of literacy and critical reasoning, values-based civic education grounded in Quranic principles, and the internalization of adab as an epistemic ethos. This epistemological model contributes to the development of students’ intellectual–spiritual character, the enhancement of critical and reflective thinking skills, and the strengthening of the social relevance of knowledge. These findings offer a conceptual contribution to the development of contemporary Islamic educational epistemology that emphasizes a balance between intellectual intelligence, spiritual depth, and social responsibility.
