Abstract

Catfish (Pangasius sp.) is an important commodity in freshwater aquaculture that has high economic value. This study aims to measure the growth and survival of catfish cultured in a controlled environment using two gallons with different conditions (Gallon A and Gallon B). Results showed that Galon B produced an average absolute length growth of 1.71 cm and an average absolute weight of 2.31 g, higher than Gallon A which reached 0.83 cm and 1.17 g, respectively. Survival rate of fish in Gallon B reached 100%, while in Galon A it was 80%. Factors influencing this difference include water quality, such as temperature, pH, and more optimized rearing management in Gallon B. The temperature ranged from 26-31°C and pH 6. Temperatures ranging from 26-31°C and pH of 6.5-8.7 in Gallon B support better growth and survival. This study emphasizes the importance of water quality management and proper feeding to improve the productivity of catfish farming

Abstract

Abstract

Applying probiotics to the recirculation system can support successful catfish production. This study aims to apply an aquaponic cultivation method that combines catfish (Clarias sp.) and water spinach cultivation by adding Probio-7 probiotics as a digestive aid to accelerate growth and improve the survival rate of catfish. This study was carried out at UPR Doa Mandeh, using the experimental design that compared the effects of probiotic application on aquaculture performance, and aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of weekly probiotics administration in a controlled aquaculture setting. Probiotics are introduced at the start of the maintenance period and reapplied weekly, following a 30% water loss, and promptly replaced with clean water. This routine was designed to maintain optimal water quality and microbial balance, supporting healthier aquatic life. The consistent probiotic treatment, aligned with systematic water management, highlights a practical approach to improving fish health and growth performance in sustainable aquaculture practices. The treatments used were without probiotics (P0) and the addition of probiotics at a rate of 0.25 mL L- 1 water (P1). The results of the research activities in P1 showed absolute length growth of 16.71 cm, absolute weight of 16.44 g, feed efficiency of 84.3%, and fish survival rate of 79%. These values were higher than those in P0, which had an absolute length growth of 5 cm, absolute weight of 11.94 g, feed efficiency of 84.3%, and fish survival rate of 77%. Water quality during the study remained within the optimal range, supporting the growth and survival of catfish.

Abstract

Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) is one of the freshwater fishery commodities that has high economic value and wide adaptability to various environmental conditions. This fish is known to be able to survive in varying temperatures and water qualities, and it has a fast growth rate. Therefore, it is widely cultivated on both an industrial and household scale. This study evaluated the growth and survival of tilapia (Oreochromis sp) in a gallon-based aquaculture system for 30 days at the Experimental Pond, Aquaculture Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. Two groups with uniform feed and density were observed for growth in length, weight, survival rate (SR), and water quality. Results were showed a survival rate of gallons A 33.3%, absolute length 2.4 cm and absolute weight 3.27 g. Meanwhile, the survival rate of gallons B 91.6%, with absolute length of 2.73 cm, and absolute weight 2.54 g. Water quality throughout cultivation was in an optimum range for temperature (27-31°C) and pH (6-9). This kind of system is considered effective for small-scale tilapia farming in limited areas with proper management.

Abstract

Clove oil has been widely used by farmers as an anesthetic agent in fish transportation. However, its use on several fish with different densities indicates the need for different doses. The aim of this study was to determine the dose of clove oil as an anesthetic agent for kissing gourami (Helostoma temminckii) and to determine the effect of administering clove oil on the transportation of kissing gourami. This study compared transportation conditions using clove oil and without clove oil (control) with different densities. The densities used were 10, 12, and 14 L-1. The kissing gourami used measured 15 ± 0.5 cm. This study was divided into two stages consisting of determining the effective concentration-100 10 minutes (EC100 10 min) and the effect of clove oil on density during 12 hours of transportation. The results showed that EC100 10 min value was 0.026 mL L-1. Immediately after transportation, survival rates and oxygen consumption levels were not significantly different between treatments and control at different densities. However, blood glucose levels of 10 fish L-1 and 12 fish L-1 were lower than the control. Fish health status monitoring after 7 days post-transportation showed that there was no significant difference between control and treatment in terms of survival rate or blood glucose levels. Therefore, the use of clove oil at a dose of 0.026 mL L-1 for the transportation of kissing gourami can be applied at a density of 14 fish L-1 for 12 hours. Further studies are required to determine the effects of clove oil as an anesthetic agent applied at denser stocking densities and longer transportation period of kissing gourami seeds.
