Abstract

Stress-induced inflammation and oxidative stress mechanisms thus plant bioactive compounds as anti-inflammation and antioxidants are placed as novel strategies to resist the adverse effects of stress. Purple sweet potatoes (PSP) as a rich source of macronutrients and anthocyanin showed health benefits as neuroprotective and metabolic diseases. However, limited research explored the effect of PSP extract on stressed animal models. This study aimed to evaluate the bioactive compound analysis of PSP and the effect on body weight gain (BW), visceral fat (VF), and interleukin-10 (IL-10) of stressed model mice. Adult male BALB/c mice (6-8 weeks) were divided into control (CTRL), and stress (STR), stress+anthocyanin-rich extract (ANC) of PSP dose 10, 20, and 40 mg/kgBW. Stress was exposed as restraint stress for 2 hours/day for 14 days. The ANC was administered once a day orally. The IL-10 was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Qualitative plant compound analysis showed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolics, glycosides, and tannins in PSP extract. The PSP extract also contains a high level of total anthocyanin, 2468.9 ± 159.38 mg/l, and high antioxidant activity. This study observed tendencies to decrease BW and VF following ANC dose of 10 mg/kgBW treatment. The administration of ANC significantly increased the level of circulatory IL-10 cytokine. In conclusion, an anthocyanin-rich extract of PSP modified BW, VF, and IL-10 levels of restraint-stressed model mice.

Abstract

The increasing elderly population in Lumajang Regency, especially in Yosowilangun District, indicates progress in life expectancy but also brings challenges related to elderly care and dependency. To address these issues, a women's empowerment program was conducted in 2023 through the mentoring of Elderly Care Mothers, focusing on promoting elderly independence and caregiver support. In 2024, the initiative continued with the development of a Senior-Friendly Park equipped with ergonomic seating, sensory therapy, and recreational facilities under the concept of the Elderly Care Corner. This program aimed to improve the quality of life of older adults, enhance community involvement, and support caregiving efforts. The activities included park construction, public engagement, capacity-building for elderly care cadres, and the development of educational materials for caregivers. The outcomes demonstrated active participation of 75 elderly individuals within the first two months, a 32 percent increase in knowledge among 20 trained elderly care cadres, and reduced workload reported by 68 percent of caregivers. Improvements were also recorded in quality of life scores, particularly in life satisfaction and daily activities. Qualitative findings highlighted increased social interaction, motivation, and caregiver confidence. This initiative has encouraged replication in other villages and is expected to contribute positively to the well-being of the elderly population in Lumajang Regency.

Abstract

Breast cancer is a major global public health problem and the most common type of cancer. The incidence of cases in Indonesia are about 42.1 per 100.000 population in 2019. There are multiple risk factors that underlie breast cancer malignancy. However, breast volume has not been yet included as a risk factor for breast cancer. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between breast volume and breast malignancy. This study is a cross-sectional study obtaining breast volume and BI-RADS score by performing mammography assessment at dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital, Malang. The inclusion criteria were women aged > 40 years and excluded those who have mammography contraindications such as pregnancy and breast-feeding. The parameters for calculating breast volume were the width, height, and compression thickness, and the BI-RADS category (0 – 6) was used to determine the malignancy.   There is no significant association using the non-parametric analytic test Kruskal Wallis analytic test (p = 0.273 , p < 0.05) and a very weak negative correlation based on the correlation test Spearmanis correlation test (-0.127). There is no association between breast volume and the risk of malignancy based on BI-RADS mammography.
