Abstract

This Community Service Program aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of kindergarten teachers through social and managerial aspects in partnership with the Indonesian Kindergarten Teachers Association (IGTKI) in Medan Deli District. The program involved nearly 50 kindergarten teachers from various schools in the district. The method used for this community service is Participatory Action Research (PAR), which consists of five stages: to Know, to Understand, to Plan, to Act, and to Change. The first stage aims to identify the conditions and needs of the kindergarten teachers, followed by a deeper understanding of the importance of early childhood English communication. The participants were then involved in planning and taking action through training on the use of digital applications and creating flipbook e-modules to support early childhood English teaching. Evaluation of the activities was conducted using pre-test and post-test instruments via Google Form, showing a significant improvement of 70-90 from the total score of 100. Additionally, 80% of participants committed to continuously using digital applications and flipbook e-modules in their schools. Overall, this community service activity successfully provided significant benefits in enhancing the knowledge and skills of IGTKI partners in Medan Deli, particularly in supporting the development of early childhood English communication skills.

Abstract

Dalam era digital saat ini, kemampuan literasi digital sangat penting. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan literasi digital siswa SMAN 1 Binjai melalui penggunaan comic strip sebagai media pembelajaran kreatif. Kegiatan ini membekali siswa dengan keterampilan menggunakan teknologi untuk menciptakan konten digital, yang merupakan keterampilan penting untuk masa depan mereka. Kegiatan ini menjelaskan tahapan dalam implementasi comic strip, mulai dari pengenalan konsep hingga pembuatan dan presentasi. Metode yang digunakan meliputi sosialisasi, bimbingan langsung, dan evaluasi untuk mengukur pemahaman siswa. Hasil menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam kemampuan menulis dan pemahaman literasi digital siswa setelah pelaksanaan kegiatan. Dengan menggunakan comic strip, siswa tidak hanya lebih termotivasi untuk belajar bahasa Inggris, tetapi juga dapat mengembangkan keterampilan menulis mereka secara mandiri dan berbasis digital. Kegiatan ini sejalan dengan kurikulum pendidikan yang menekankan pentingnya keterampilan komunikasi dan penggunaan teknologi dalam pembelajaran, sehingga relevan dengan kebutuhan pendidikan saat ini.

Abstract

One issue that high school students frequently encountered was their inability to speak English word for word. They appeared extremely perplexed when trying to articulate their thoughts. Many students, particularly in speaking classes, lacked the enthusiasm or confidence to perform in English. That issue was also experienced by students at SMAN 2 Binjai whereas there are several ways to help students learn English, especially when it comes to speaking. Research has shown that podcasts are a useful tool for learning second languages. For instance, research indicates that podcasts might enhance students' vocabulary, linguistic proficiency, and learning activities. Additional researchers discovered that podcasts help pupils improve their speaking abilities. The research conducted was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research was done in SMAN 2 Binjai. The subject of the research were thirty students of social major students. The research was done in 2 cycles. From the results of the average score, it showed that there was a significant increase which was a good achievement to improve the students' speaking skills score. From the interview results, the students found it was fun to use podcasts. They began to be more confident to speak English and were motivated to learn more by using podcasts. Podcasts help students become more proficient speakers.
