Abstract

Stunting and dental caries are two major health problems affecting children in Indonesia. This study investigated the association between stunting and dental caries risk in Indonesian children. Data were sourced from Google Schoolar, Pubmed and Science Direct. Demographic data and sample characteristics showed that stunted children come from diverse socioeconomic back-grounds, with the prevalence of stunting varying across regions. The prevalence of dental caries was also high among stunted children. The results of this study have important implications for public health policy development in Indonesia, namely the need for a holistic approach to the prevention of stunting and dental caries, including increased nutrition, dental health, and oral hygiene counseling. It was concluded that these programs could improve the overall quality of life of Indonesian children.

Abstract

Education is an endeavor that refers to the noble values that are part of the nation's life, by which these values can be continued through the role of educational transfer in both cognitive, attitudinal and skill aspects. One way to obtain educational values is by conducting outdoor learning activities (outing class). Outing class is an educational program that is one of the school programs in an effort to build the character of school children, especially the character of the nation where the outing class program is a direct and real morally charged character education learning that invites children to learn directly about the object of learning. The purpose of this activity is to develop children's level of knowledge and interest in learning outside of school. The methods used in this activity are based on observation, interviews and direct documentation in the field. The subjects of this activity amounted to 65 TK children and 9 mentoring teachers. This Outing class activity gives the impression of an extraordinary and fun experience for Prime Kids TK children at the Baiturrahmah Educational Dental and Oral Hospital.

Abstract

Oral health knowledge should be given to school-age children. Elementary school is a very strategic group for oral health mana-gement. Audiovisual kinesthetic media is included in multimedia which contains three elements, namely visual elements (ima-ges), audio elements (sound) and motion elements at the same time. The purpose of this counseling is to change children's beha-viour in maintaining oral health. This activity was carried out in August 2024 with 35 students attending. This counselling activity for children at SDN 09 Air Pacah has gone well. The method of counselling by means of practice or demonstration was able to improve children's understanding, especially in practicing how to brush their teeth properly; even counselling by singing songs also had an effect on changes in knowledge, attitudes and application of toothbrushing actions in school-age children.

Abstract

Introduction: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder that commonly presents with oral manifestations, including xerostomia, mucosal ulcerations, dental caries, and periodontitis. Periodontitis, characterized by progressive destruction of tooth-supporting tissues, is frequently aggravated by inadequate oral hygiene practices. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between oral hygiene maintenance and periodontal health in patients diagnosed with SLE. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional correlation design. It involved 100 participants, comprising 50 SLE patients and 50 healthy controls subjects, recruited through purposive sampling. Periodontal health was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Oral hygiene maintenance behavior was assessed using a self-administered structured questionnaire, adapted and modified from the Hiroshima University–Dental Behavioral Inventory (HU-DBI). Differences in community periodontal index between the SLE and control groups were analyzed using a Mann-Whitney test. The relationship between oral hygiene behaviors and CPI scores was examined using Spearman’s rank correlation test. Results: The results revealed that SLE patients exhibited poorer oral hygiene knowledge, attitudes, and practices compared to healthy controls subjects, along with significantly worse periodontal health (p < 0.05). Furthermore, Spearman’s rank correlation test showed significant negative correlations between oral hygiene maintenance behaviors and CPI scores in the SLE group (r = - 0.156, p < 0.05; r = - 0.148, p < 0.05; r = - 0.148, p < 0.05, respectively) indicating that patients who practiced better oral hygiene tended to have lower CPI scores and, consequently, healthier periodontal status. Conclusion: Improved oral hygiene practices are significantly correlated with enhanced periodontal health in patients with SLE. These findings underscore the importance of emphasizing effective oral hygiene measures as part of comprehensive periodontal management strategies for SLE patients.
