Abstract

Coronary stent insertion is a medical procedure that aims to enhance coronary heart disease patients' cardiac blood flow. However, some studies suggest that this procedure can affect the health of the oral cavity's soft tissues and periodontals. Side effects can be caused by physiological changes after medical procedures as well as the consumption of medications such as antiplatelets and anticoagulants prescribed after the insertion of the ring. The purpose of this study is to investigate how heart ring insertion affects the condition of the oral cavity's soft tissues and periodontal by analyzing the available research results. The method used in this study was a literature review from various sources that discussed changes in the state of the mouth following the placement of a heart ring. The results showed that patients after heart band insertion were more prone to disorders such as xerostomia (dry mouth), recurrent canker sores, oral candidiasis, as well as a higher chance of developing periodontal disorders, including gingivitis and periodontitis. The main factors that contribute to this condition are the side effects of medications taken regularly, changes in the body's immune response, as well as the connection between cardiovascular disease and periodontal disease that deteriorates the patient's general health. The conclusions of this review emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach between cardiologists and dentists in monitoring the oral health of patients undergoing heart ring placement. Prevention and education about oral and dental health care need to be provided to minimize the risk of further complications.

Abstract

Tooth mobility is a common clinical manifestation of advanced periodontal disease that affects chewing function, aesthetics, and patients’ quality of life. Managing this condition requires a comprehensive approach, including stabilization procedures such as splinting and adjunctive therapies like chlorhexidine. To enhance healthcare providers' competencies, Muhammadiyah Hospital Malang conducted a clinical training workshop on the emergency management of mobile teeth. This workshop involved 30 dentists and covered theoretical knowledge, hands-on practice of splint fabrication using orthodontic wire and composite resin, application of chlorhexidine gel, and clinical case discussions. Evaluation through pre- and post-tests demonstrated a significant increase in participants’ knowledge (from 55% to 85%). The training not only improved participants’ technical skills but also strengthened interprofessional collaboration in managing complex periodontal cases. The outcomes underscore the importance of integrating similar programs into continuing education to support the improvement of dental healthcare quality and the implementation of higher education’s tridharma (education, research, and community service).

Abstract

Post-extraction emergencies such as dry socket, uncontrolled bleeding, and infection remain significant challenges in dental practice. Hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, has been proven to accelerate wound healing and reduce post-extraction complications. This community service activity involved a training workshop on the clinical application of hyaluronic acid (HA) for dentists in Sidoarjo Regency, aimed at enhancing their knowledge and skills in hyaluronic acid (HA) use. The one-day training employed lectures, case discussions, and clinical simulations and was attended by 25 dentists. Results showed a 35% improvement in participants’ understanding of hyaluronic acid (HA)’s role in accelerating healing and preventing complications. Evaluation indicated that hyaluronic acid (HA) effectively reduces pain, prevents complications such as dry socket, and promotes wound reepithelialization. This training is expected to improve the standard of dental care and serve as a replicable model for other regions. The implementation of hyaluronic acid (HA) as a post-extraction protocol supports evidence-based practice and natural material innovation, leading to optimal clinical outcomes.

Abstract

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure that carries the risk of complications such as alveolar osteitis (dry socket). Chlorhexidine digluconate, a broad-spectrum antiseptic, has been proven effective in reducing the risk of infection and accelerating wound healing following extraction. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of chlorhexidine usage training for dentists at National Hospital in improving competencies related to the prevention of post-extraction complications. The training was conducted as an intensive workshop comprising presentations, interactive discussions, and clinical simulations. Evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests demonstrated an average knowledge increase of 40%, while practical observations indicated enhanced skills in the correct application of the antiseptic. These results confirm that comprehensive training can improve dentists’ abilities to implement chlorhexidine use to prevent alveolar osteitis and other complications. Consequently, this program contributes to improving the quality of dental healthcare services and serves as a sustainable professional development model in clinical dental practice.

Abstract

Periodontal disease is one of the common dental and oral health problems and can cause damage to the dental supporting tissue if not treated properly. Various approaches have been developed to prevent and treat this disease, one of which is the use of probiotics. Probiotics are known to help maintain the balance of the oral microbiota, reduce inflammation, and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria that contribute to periodontal disease. This study aims to review the role of probiotics in improving periodontal tissue health based on recent studies. The method used in this review involved searching and selecting journals from various scientific databases relevant to the topic of probiotics and periodontal health. The inclusion criteria included studies that addressed the effects of probiotics on periodontal health, while the exclusion criteria were applied to studies with methodologies that were unclear or irrelevant to the focus of the study. The results of the review show that probiotics, especially from the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, have the potential to reduce gingival inflammation, reduce the depth of periodontal pockets, and improve overall periodontal health. The main mechanisms found involve competition with pathogenic bacteria, modulation of immune responses, as well as the production of natural antimicrobial compounds. In conclusion, probiotics have the potential to be an effective adjunct therapy in maintaining the health of periodontal tissue. However, more research is needed to determine the optimal dosage, duration of use, as well as its long-term effectiveness in periodontal care.

Abstract

Hyaluronic acid as a socket preservation material can absorb large amounts of hydration and regulate appropriate pressure in the surrounding tissue, resulting in expansion of the extracellular space. The socket preservation technique used is a solution to bone loss due to tooth extraction. However, research on the hyaluronic acid (Gengigel) material in sockets with periodontitis has not yet been clearly studied. In this study, we will see an increase in the number of osteoblasts in the alveolar bone after tooth extraction in Wistar rats with periodontitis. To determine the increase in the number of osteoblasts after administering Hyaluronic acid to the tooth sockets of Wistar rats with periodontitis. An increase in the number of osteoblast cells was observed using a multi-head light microscope in 5 areas of the preparation at 400x magnification. The measurement results from 5 areas are averaged and a calculation is obtained for one preparation. There are 2 groups that will be used in this research, namely the Control group (without treatment), HA (given Gengigel). Each group was tested at 14 and 21 days after administering the material. The research results showed that the Hyaluronic Acid (Gengigel) group had a higher number of osteoblast cells than the control group. The one-way ANOVA test showed an average significance result of 0.000 (p < 0.05) for all groups. This indicates that there was a significant change in each treatment group. Giving hyaluronic acid to the tooth sockets of Wistar rats with periodontitis can increase the number of osteoblast cells.
