Abstract

:  Agriculture is a crucial sector in the Indonesian economy, especially in rural areas that rely on agricultural activities as a source of livelihood. One important agricultural commodity is rubber, which not only serves as a source of income for farmers but also contributes to both the local and national economy. In Nagari Batukambing, Ampek Nagari District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province, rubber farmers play a central role in rubber production, although they often face various economic and social challenges. This study aims to analyze the survival strategies of rubber farmers in Nagari Batukambing, Ampek Nagari District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province. The research utilizes the livelihood strategy theory proposed by Ellis, which focuses on the utilization of livelihood assets, including human capital, natural capital, physical capital, financial capital, and social capital. This study adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. Data collection methods include document study, non-participant observation, and in-depth interviews. Data analysis involves several steps: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research findings have significant implications for both farmers and agricultural policy. Farmers are encouraged to prioritize skill development and ongoing education to adapt to changing agricultural practices, while also diversifying their crops to reduce financial risks and enhance food security. Efficient use of tools and equipment should be emphasized to boost productivity, alongside robust financial management through savings and accessible loans to support investments and manage unexpected expenses. Strengthening social networks among farmers and landowners fosters mutual support and collaboration. For policymakers, there is a need to develop support programs that provide training, improve access to microcredit, invest in agricultural infrastructure, and encourage cooperative initiatives to enhance farmers' bargaining power. Overall, these strategies and policies can significantly contribute to the resilience and sustainability of farming communities in Nagari Batukambing.

Abstract

Poverty has always been closely associated with farming and fishing communities, due to their inability to meet daily basic needs for survival and their lack of income. Compared to farmers, the poorest group in Sutera District is the fishermen, numbering 2,140 individuals (Padang Ekspres, April 21, 2012). Most residents of Pesisir Selatan depend on food crop agriculture, fisheries, and trade, while other potential resources include plantations and tourism. The majority of residents live along the coastline stretching from north to south. Their primary livelihoods are farming and fishing. Administratively, Pesisir Selatan Regency consists of 12 districts, 76 nagari (villages), and 364 kampung (hamlets). One of the poorer districts is Sutera, which consists of four nagari: Surantih, Taratak, Ampiang Parak, and Amping Parak Timur, with a population of 49,019. This study aims to describe the impact of empowerment programs on the socio-economic life of poor fishing households in Nagari Taratak, Sutera District, Pesisir Selatan Regency. The research method used is qualitative, with data collected through observation and in-depth interviews with informants selected using snowball sampling. Data validity was tested using triangulation, and analysis was carried out using the interactive model developed by Mathew Miles and Huberman. The program’s social impact included closer social interactions after the establishment of KUBE, stronger cooperation, and reduced competition. Its economic impacts can be seen in new employment opportunities for fishermen’s wives and children, increased income, and improved educational attainment among fishermen’s children. The KUBE program has therefore contributed positively to the economic life of fishermen who made use of it.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze social relations and community responses due to river water pollution in Batang Arau Village, Padang Selatan District, Padang City, West Sumatra Province. This study uses the social construction theory of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckman, namely that reality is formed socially and social reality as a process through human actions and interactions. Social reality is not objective or independent, but is the result of construction through social interaction. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. Data collection methods are carried out by document studies, non-participant observations and in-depth interviews. Data analysis using the Milles and Huberman (1992) model which is carried out in several stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that in social relations of the community due to water pollution of the Batang Arau River, there is a conflict between communities living around the river where people who are less concerned about the cleanliness of the river water throw garbage carelessly into the river so that other people feel disturbed because of the impacts caused such as garbage scattered on the banks of the river and even causing flooding when it rains. The community's response to water pollution of the Batang Arau River is first, reminding each other not to throw garbage into the river. Second, the community adapts or adjusts to river water pollution, which used to use river water for bathing and washing then switched to using drilled wells, rainwater that is collected to do activities such as bathing or washing. Third, the community strongly supports the efforts made by the government to deal with the problem of water pollution in the Batang Arau River
