Abstract

The low literacy rate of elementary school students is a serious problem in education, especially in an era that demands reading and writing skills as the foundation of learning. Literacy plays a crucial role in basic education, yet many elementary school students still struggle to achieve adequate literacy competencies. To address this issue, a systematic approach is needed to improve elementary school student literacy, focusing on planning, implementation, and evaluation of learning. The research method used was a literature review and analysis of secondary data from various sources, such as scientific journals, government reports, and case studies related to learning management and literacy practices at the elementary school level. The results showed that structured learning management, including the development of a literacy-based curriculum, the implementation of active learning strategies (e.g., guided reading, group discussions, and interactive storytelling), and the use of portfolio-based assessments, significantly improved students' literacy skills. Furthermore, supporting factors such as ongoing teacher training, parental involvement in literacy activities, and the availability of diverse and easily accessible learning resources also play an important role in creating a learning environment that supports literacy development. This study concludes that a holistic and sustainable approach to learning management, which combines evidence-based strategies and stakeholder collaboration, can be an effective solution to improving literacy at the elementary school level. By emphasizing the interconnectedness of curriculum design, teaching methodology, and assessment frameworks, this study underscores the potential of well-managed learning systems to bridge the literacy gap among young learners. Further research could explore the long-term impact of these strategies on students' academic achievement and lifelong learning habits.

Abstract

This study investigates teachers’ strategies in implementing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and examines its effects on classroom climate and students’ socio-emotional development in Grade VI of SD Negeri Nyalindung 2. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the report is produced from examining files, questions and answers and observations. The results show that three key strategies—emotional reflection, collaborative learning, and jointly formulated classroom agreements—contributed to improved emotional regulation, empathy, interpersonal skills, and responsible decision-making among students. Moreover, the classroom climate became increasingly supportive and inclusive, characterized by reduced minor conflicts, greater openness in communication, and more positive peer interactions. These findings highlight the pedagogical significance of integrating Social Emotional Learning into classroom practice, suggesting that Social Emotional Learning fosters not only individual socio-emotional competencies but also a psychologically safe learning environment that enhances students’ engagement. Overall, Social Emotional Learning constitutes an essential instructional approach for promoting students’ socio-emotional well-being and strengthening character formation in primary education.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze elementary school management in handling students from marginalized social environments at Kanoman Elementary School. The background of the study is based on the socioeconomic conditions of the community surrounding the school, which is vulnerable to problems of poverty, domestic violence, crime, and low parental education, which impact student learning motivation, behavior, and discipline. This study used a qualitative approach with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation studies. Informants consisted of the principal, teachers, school committee members, and parents. The results show that school management is implemented through four main functions: (1) Planning, by developing a program for handling problem students based on empathy and social needs; (2) Organizing, through the formation of a Problem Student Handling Team (TPSB) involving teachers and the school committee; (3) Actuating, through implementing interventions such as home visits, character development, simple counseling services, motivational classes, and collaboration with village officials; and (4) Controlling, through routine evaluations, monitoring student behavior, and the application of non-violent discipline. This study concludes that a humanistic, collaborative, and character-focused management approach can create a safer, more inclusive learning environment that supports the development of students from marginalized families. These findings can serve as a reference for other schools in developing strategies for managing students with social problems.

Abstract

Adolescent mental health is currently in an alarming condition; national data indicate that approximately one in three Indonesian adolescents (34.9%) experience mental health problems, with significant increases in anxiety and depression cases in the post-pandemic period. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Guidance and Counseling (GC) model at SMPN 43 Bandung using Edwards III Policy Implementation Model as the analytical framework. This research employed a qualitative case study approach with data collected through in-depth interviews and observations. The findings reveal that communication through In-House Training (IHT) ensures shared understanding and alignment between school leaders and implementers, while adequate budgeting and well-facilitated counseling rooms serve as key determinants of success, distinguishing this school from previous studies. The autonomous bureaucratic structure and formal collaboration through the TPPK Team, ESQ Training, Character Building initiatives, and the Homeroom Teacher Program establish an efficient referral system. Furthermore, the empathetic attitude of GC practitioners successfully eliminates the stigma commonly attached to counseling services, leading to a significant increase in students’ help-seeking behavior. However, the study also identifies gaps in the technical competence of GC teachers, particularly the need for enhanced mastery of advanced clinical counseling techniques. The study concludes that the implementation of GC services at SMPN 43 Bandung is highly effective due to the integration of strong managerial commitment and robust systemic support. This success demonstrates that eliminating instrumental barriers directly contributes to creating a healthy and stigma-free school climate. The model has strong potential to serve as a best practice reference for other educational institutions in managing adolescent mental health.
