Abstract

This study investigates the internal barriers faced by university students when using English movies to improve their listening skills. Conducted at the University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang, this research used a qualitative descriptive method involving 24 first-semester students through classroom observation and interviews. The results identified four main barriers: difficulty understanding grammar, limited vocabulary, dependency on subtitles, and trouble recognizing accents. For instance, many students struggled to follow figurative language and idiomatic expressions such as “get your head out of the clouds.” Others reported confusion when characters spoke too quickly or with unfamiliar pronunciation. These challenges limited students’ ability to fully comprehend the dialogue, despite their interest in using movies as a learning tool. The findings indicate that watching movies alone is not enough to improve listening skills without structured support. Therefore, educators should handle these barriers by providing guided activities such as teaching key vocabulary before viewing, using pause-and-reflect techniques, and conducting post-viewing discussions. These steps can help turn passive watching into an active learning process and enhance listening comprehension at the university level.

Abstract

Kegiatan asistensi mengajar di luar negeri memberi pengalaman berharga bagi mahasiswa, terutama melalui keterlibatan dalam acara seperti Sport Day di Islam Wittaya Foundation School, Thailand. Melalui observasi partisipatif dan dokumentasi, kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa memperoleh manfaat edukatif seperti peningkatan keterampilan komunikasi lintas budaya, manajemen acara, serta pemahaman budaya lokal. Selain itu, Sport Day juga mengasah soft skills seperti kepemimpinan dan kerja sama tim. Kegiatan ini menjadi wadah penting untuk pengembangan profesional dan personal dalam konteks internasional.

Abstract

This study examines language acquisition in early childhood, with a focus on Bebi, a 3-year-old bilingual child. The aim of this research is to understand the language acquisition process of Bebi, who is a bilingual child, and how he combines vocabulary from two different languages ​​in everyday communication. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection through observation of daily interactions between children and their environment. The research results show that Bebi tends to simplify words that are difficult to pronounce and uses pronunciation patterns that are already familiar to her. Children also demonstrate a basic understanding of everyday concepts and objects. These findings suggest that bilingual environments can influence children's language development in unique ways, and that bilingual children can master both languages ​​well if they get enough exposure.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of slang used by teenagers and explain the reasons behind their use in the context of social identity. Slang is defined as an informal language used by certain social groups for internal communication, reflecting the values and experiences of its users. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through semi-structured interviews and observations on social media, especially among high school students aged 15-17 years. The results show that there are 10 slang terms that are often used by teenagers, such as “BFR”, “tea”, “C U”, “PAP”, “YOLO”, “salty”, “Kk”, “Btw”, “fix” “YOLO”, and “ASAP”. This study also found that the use of slang can strengthen teenage social identity as well as influence intergenerational communication patterns, where adults often do not understand or negatively judge teenage use of slang. Thus, this study provides insights into how informal language plays a role in shaping social identity and interaction dynamics in teenage communities.
