Abstract

This study examines the morphological development in a 2-year-6-month-old child, K.A., using an interactionist framework. Observations were conducted over one month, revealing that limited exposure to varied linguistic inputs resulted in restricted vocabulary and incomplete sentence formation. Despite K.A.'s responsiveness to communication, the lack of parental engagement, particularly the father's absence, hindered his morphological development. The study found that increased maternal interaction slightly improved K.A.'s use of morphemes and sentence structures, underscoring the crucial role of parental involvement in language acquisition. These findings highlight the importance of enriched linguistic environments and suggest targeted interventions to support early morphological development.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of technology on children's vocabulary development, focusing on a case study of a three-year-old boy named Rizky. Despite Rizky's enthusiasm for learning through YouTube videos, his vocabulary was initially limited to words from the videos. His mother, Ibu Maya, creatively intervened by incorporating interactive play, real-world interactions, and reading sessions to expand his vocabulary. This approach demonstrates the necessity of balancing digital media with traditional learning methods and highlights the role of parental involvement. Theoretical frameworks such as Dual Coding Theory and Social Learning Theory provide insights into the effectiveness of this combined approach.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between language development and speech production in children with speech delays. This study uses a qualitative approach. The research subject was a 4 year old child with speech delays. Data was collected through direct observation and interviews with parents as well. Data collection techniques include observing children's verbal behavior, assessing children's language abilities, and structured interviews to identify factors that influence language development and speech production. The results showed a significant relationship between language development and speech production in children with speech delays. The results of the analysis show that the higher the level of language development, the better the child's speech production. These findings demonstrate the importance of early intervention that focuses on improving language skills to support better speech production in children with speech delays. This research makes an important contribution to the development of more effective intervention programs in supporting language and speech development in children with speech delays.

Abstract

This journal explores the vocabulary development of a two-year-old child named Salma, using Jean Piaget's cognitive development theory as the analytical framework. This research adopts a qualitative case study design to explore vocabulary development. By observing Salma's interactions within her natural environment and through parental interviews, this research identifies significant milestones in her language acquisition. Key findings include Salma's mastery of object permanence, engagement in symbolic play, and the formation of two-word phrases, all of which align with Piaget's sensorimotor stage. The role of responsive parenting and the quality of maternal speech are highlighted as crucial factors in Salma's rapid vocabulary growth. This case study underscores the importance of providing language-rich environments and encourages the integration of Piaget’s theoretical insights into early childhood education practices to foster cognitive and linguistic development.

Abstract

This study investigates the internal barriers faced by university students when using English movies to improve their listening skills. Conducted at the University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang, this research used a qualitative descriptive method involving 24 first-semester students through classroom observation and interviews. The results identified four main barriers: difficulty understanding grammar, limited vocabulary, dependency on subtitles, and trouble recognizing accents. For instance, many students struggled to follow figurative language and idiomatic expressions such as “get your head out of the clouds.” Others reported confusion when characters spoke too quickly or with unfamiliar pronunciation. These challenges limited students’ ability to fully comprehend the dialogue, despite their interest in using movies as a learning tool. The findings indicate that watching movies alone is not enough to improve listening skills without structured support. Therefore, educators should handle these barriers by providing guided activities such as teaching key vocabulary before viewing, using pause-and-reflect techniques, and conducting post-viewing discussions. These steps can help turn passive watching into an active learning process and enhance listening comprehension at the university level.

Abstract

This study examines code-switching patterns in Indonesian local podcasts, specifically focusing on the interactions between Cinta Laura and Prilly Latuconsina on Puella. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research analyzes the types and functions of code-switching between Indonesian and English. The data collection involved observation and documentation of podcast episodes, with systematic transcription and analysis of code-switched utterances. The findings reveal that inter-sentential switching is the predominant type of code-switching used, with 32 instances identified - 13 switches from English to Indonesian and 19 switches from Indonesian to English. This research contributes to understanding how code-switching functions as a communication strategy in Indonesian digital media, particularly among bilingual public figures.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of derivational and inflectional affixes in selected songs by Meghan Trainor. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes 10 of Trainor’s songs to identify and classify affixes based on their morphological functions. The results show that inflectional affixes dominate the lyrics, with a total of 77 occurrences compared to 27 derivational affixes. This indicates that the lyrics frequently feature inflectional affixes to convey grammatical functions such as tenses, plurality, and comparison. This finding may suggest a tendency in similar English pop lyrics tend to use inflectional affixes to maintain grammatical structure while supporting rhythmic flow.

Abstract

This study investigates the utilization of mood and speech functions in the dialogues of the romantic musical movie La La Land (2016). Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research focused on identifying and analyzing different types of Mood (declarative, interrogative, imperative) and Speech Functions (expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, poetic, phatic) within selected dialogues of the main characters. Data were collected through meticulous observation and transcription of movie dialogues, followed by systematic classification and interpretation based on Halliday & Matthiessen’s (2014) and Holmes’ (2013) frameworks. The findings reveal that the Declarative Mood is the most dominant mood type, accounting for 10 out of 15 total mood instances. This prevalence suggests that characters frequently engage in conveying information about their feelings, experiences, and plot developments. Concurrently, the Referential function emerged as the most dominant speech function, with 8 out of 27 total speech functions. This indicates a primary focus on providing information, describing events, and stating facts essential for advancing the narrative and establishing context within the film's dialogues. The study highlights how these linguistic elements contribute to the emotional delivery and narrative messages of La La Land, offering insights into the complex interplay between language, character dynamics, and thematic exploration in musical movies.
