Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' conceptual difficulties in understanding maps and scales in geography learning. The study uses a qualitative approach with an exploratory descriptive model. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom learning observations, and analysis of student work documents. The Research subjects consisted of ten Year 10 students from Samarinda State Senior High School 8, who were purposively selected to represent variations in academic ability and learning characteristics. The study's results showed three main categories: difficulties understanding the concept of scale, difficulties converting distance units, and difficulties interpreting and reading maps. These difficulties were influenced by the weak connection between conceptual understanding, spatial representation, and students' real experiences. The findings emphasise the need for visual-based contextual learning supported by interactive digital media. Implicitly, this study provides a basis for teachers and curriculum developers to sustainably strengthen students' spatial literacy and geospatial thinking skills. These results are relevant for further Research examining the relationship between conceptual difficulties and innovative learning strategies in the secondary school context.

Abstract

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) play an important role in supporting the local economy, especially in areas far from major urban centers. However, comprehensive studies linking visitors' perceptions of weekend MSME activities with regional perspectives are still limited. This study aims to analyze visitors' perceptions of MSME activities on weekends and the regional conditions of the Padan Liu Burung area, Malinau Regency, as a supporting space for these activities. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 42 respondents in January 2026, then analyzed using descriptive statistics on a 1–5 Likert scale and thematic analysis triangulated with survey findings. The results show that perceptions of MSME activities are in the high category (M = 4.149; SD = 0.512), especially in terms of liveliness and social interaction. Perceptions of regional conditions were also high (M = 3.868; SD = 0.583), but lower than the activity dimension, particularly in terms of cleanliness, supporting facilities, stall layout, and parking management. These findings indicate that the area has developed as a dynamic temporary public space but still faces challenges in spatial governance. Theoretically, this study proposes that the sustainability of temporary public spaces based on MSMEs requires a balance between experiential value and spatial governance, so that high social vitality needs to be balanced with adaptive infrastructure and spatial management capacity. These findings contribute to economic geography and regional planning studies in understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of community-based local economic activities.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been increasingly utilized in higher education and has influenced the way students learn and complete academic tasks. This study aims to examine university students’ perceptions and attitudes toward the use of Artificial Intelligence in the learning process. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed, involving 74 active students from the Geography Education study program. Data collection was conducted via an online questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and score interpretation techniques. Research findings suggest that students' perspectives on the use of Artificial Intelligence fall into the positive category, with 73.5% reporting a positive view. At the same time, students' attitudes toward AI use also fall into a positive category, reaching 74.1%. These findings suggest that Artificial Intelligence is perceived as beneficial in enhancing learning efficiency, motivation, and student Engagement. However, the study also reveals students' concerns regarding potential over-reliance on AI, which may reduce critical thinking skills, as well as issues related to data privacy and security. Based on these findings, this study recommends that universities provide training on Artificial Intelligence (AI) ethics, establish privacy protection guidelines, and implement academic integrity policies.

Abstract

The city of Balikpapan is dominated by hilly topography, covering approximately 85% of its area, while the remaining 15% consists of flat land. These conditions greatly influence surface runoff patterns, slope stability, land-use changes, and urban development policies, particularly those related to settlement expansion and landslide risk management. This situation has encouraged communities to build settlements in hilly areas; however, development in such locations increases the potential for landslides, especially when combined with steep slopes, high rainfall, and unstable soil conditions. This study aims to map landslide vulnerability in Balikpapan City using a GIS-based weighted overlay method. In addition to mapping vulnerability, the study also assesses the level of settlement exposure within each vulnerability class and develops spatially based mitigation strategies to support disaster risk reduction. The results of this study are expected to serve as a basis for government recommendations in landslide management and mitigation. The parameters used include soil type, land cover, slope steepness, and rainfall intensity, each weighted and scored according to its influence on landslide potential. Through the weighted overlay process, a landslide vulnerability zonation map was produced. The results show that West Balikpapan, South Balikpapan, Central Balikpapan, and North Balikpapan districts have the largest areas of high vulnerability, although the assessment covers all six districts. A total of 177,174 housing units are located within landslide-vulnerable zones, with 168,989 units in the medium vulnerability class, while the remaining 8,185 units are distributed across low and high classes. This distribution indicates that exposure is largely concentrated in medium-risk zones. Mitigation recommendations include increasing public awareness, constructing retaining walls on steep slopes, establishing evacuation routes, and installing drainage systems on steep terrain.
