Abstract

The post-1980 dominance of neoliberal economics has exacerbated structural inequalities, while socialism failed to address efficiency challenges. In this context, M. Umer Chapra’s ideas on distributive justice and the state’s role offer a value-based Islamic alternative. This article critically examines Chapra’s framework through qualitative library research, employing content analysis of his seminal works (Islam and the Economic Challenge, The Future of Economics). The study reveals that Chapra rejects the capitalism-socialism dichotomy and proposes an Islamic economic system anchored in: (1) preventive-curative justice (via zakat, equitable taxation, and prohibition of riba); (2) the state as an ethical facilitator in market regulation and wealth redistribution; and (3) the integration of maqasid al-shariah (higher objectives of Islamic law) as a policy blueprint. These ideas remain relevant to contemporary crises, including global inequality and ecological degradation, yet their implementation requires bold institutional reforms. By elucidating the practical dimensions of Chapra’s thought, this article advances Islamic economics literature beyond theoritical discourse toward actionable policy design.

Abstract

Amtsal al-Qur’an refers to the rhetorical style of parables employed in the Qur’an to convey divine messages through concrete analogies that are easily understood by humans. This article aims to examine the role of amtsal al-Qur’an from the perspective of Ulumul Qur’an by exploring its definitions, classifications, and rhetorical forms (sighat). This study applies a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach by collecting data from classical and contemporary tafsir literature as well as relevant scholarly articles. The findings show that amtsal al-Qur’an is not merely a figurative language style but also serves as an educational, rhetorical, and moral-reflective tool that grounds abstract values into tangible illustrations. Based on analysis, amtsal is classified into musharrahah, kaminah, and mursalah, while its sighat include patterns of tashbīh, majāz, and isti‘ārah. A deeper understanding of amtsal can enrich the interpretation of Qur’anic verses and strengthening contextual approaches in dakwah and value-based education. This finding is expectedly to serve as a reference for developing Ulumul Qur’an studies, especially related to tadabbur methods, dakwah, and the reinforcement of Islamic education.

Abstract

Hadith holds an important position as the second source of Islamic teachings, serving not onlyas a basis for legal rulings but also shaping social and economic values. This study aims toanalyze how the principle of ta’awun (mutual assistance) found in authentic hadiths isimplemented through the tabarru’ mechanism in Islamic life insurance products in Indonesia. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using a library research method, byvalidating the sanad and matan of the hadith and analyzing the content of Islamic lifeinsurance policy documents. The result shows that the tabarru’ mechanism in Islamic lifeinsurance genuinely applies the value of solidarity through contribution-based donations, shared risk claim schemes, surplus underwriting arrangements, and an interest-free qardh(benevolent loan) mechanism. These findings demonstrate that the principle of ta’awun, derived from authentic hadith and supported by Quranic verses, can be practically andsystematically actualized through the tabarru’ mechanism as a risk protection instrumentbased on Islamic principles. This study is expected to enrich the literatur on applied hadithstudies and provide input for the development of Islamic finansial practices that remainaligned with authentic sources.

Abstract

Sukuk has become a strategic instrument in global Islamic finance and an important pillar of development financing in Indonesia, especially after the enactment of the Sovereign Sukuk Law (SBSN) in 2008. However, the rapid expansion of sovereign sukuk has not been matched by adequate public understanding or corporate participation, reflecting the need for a clearer examination of sukuk concepts, systems, and operations. This study employs a qualitative approach through a literature review of regulations, DSN-MUI fatwas, and reports from OJK, BI, and KNEKS, supported by academic publications. Using a descriptive–analytical method, the study explores the structure, mechanisms, challenges, and prospects of the sukuk market in Indonesia. The findings indicate that sukuk is based on real ownership, the prohibition of riba, and Sharia-compliant contracts, distinguishing it from conventional bonds. Indonesia’s sukuk market operates within a strong regulatory framework, with issuance involving contract structuring, underlying asset determination, and primary and secondary market processes. Despite significant growth, challenges remain, including low literacy, limited Sharia infrastructure, and modest corporate sukuk issuance. Nonetheless, regulatory support, digitalization through e-SBN, and rising interest in sustainable instruments highlight sukuk’s potential to strengthen development financing and deepen the Islamic financial market.

Abstract

This article aims to reformulate the theory of demand and supply from an Islamic economic perspective through a comparative analysis with conventional economics. Conventional theory relies on assumptions of consumer rationality, utility maximization, and a free market mechanism, which tend to overlook moral, spiritual, and social dimensions in economic behaviour. Islamic economics provides an alternative and more holistic approach by emphasizing halal–haram principles, maslahah, justice, and trustworthiness as the core of market behaviour. This research employs a literature review method by analyzing scholarly articles, books, and classical Islamic economic texts, including the works of Ibn Khaldun and Ibn Taymiyyah. Findings indicate that Islamic demand and supply theory not only explains the interaction of price and quantity but also embeds moral values and ethical guidelines in market operations. Market equilibrium in Islam is defined as a just and transparent equilibrium, free from riba, gharar, and monopoly, and strengthened by the institution of hisbah. The study concludes that an Islamic market framework promotes a more stable, just, and socially beneficial economic system.
