Abstract

Turn-taking plays a vital role in managing and structuring conversations, making it especially important in both everyday interactions and educational environments. While much research has explored turn-taking in classroom or casual settings, limited attention has been given to how it operates in bilingual or multilingual media interviews. This study seeks to fill that gap by examining the turn-taking strategies used during interviews between Jimmy Fallon and K-Pop Idol BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan), a globally recognized Korean boy band, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Employing a qualitative method, the study analyzed three interview videos through transcription and manual coding, guided by Stenstrom’s framework of turn-taking strategies. The analysis identified three main strategies: Taking the Turn (TTS), Holding the Turn (HTS), and Yielding the Turn (YTS). Among these, Taking the Turn (TTS) emerged as the most dominant, appearing in 47% of instances—emphasizing its key role in shaping the dynamic flow of K-Pop Idol interviews. These findings offer valuable insights for language learners and educators by demonstrating authentic conversational strategies in multilingual contexts. Furthermore, these findings may also serve as practical references for media professionals and interviewers aiming to manage turn-taking more effectively during live interactions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the needs of Adisutjipto-Aerospace Institute of Technology (ITDA) Yogyakarta students on online learning as the basis for the creation of an online learning platform. The research focused on and investigated 1) how students perceive the implementation of synchronous and asynchronous online learning in terms of content and structure; and 2) the students' learning needs regarding learning mode and activity, teacher aspect, and technical aspect of the online learning implementation. A survey design and a questionnaire were employed for a total of 146 students from one Mechanical Engineering class and three Aerospace Engineering classes who were all enrolled in an English course. The number of samples taken from the entire population was 119, with a confidence level of 5% and randomly selected. It was found that the three most important aspects in online learning are that of teachers with a mean value of 3.266 (very high), followed by learning content and structure (mean value of 3.153) and technical (mean value of 3.127) which are high. The research revealed in an online learning platform, teachers have a crucial role in the learning process of the students and in having a holistic online learning implementation. The results became the basis for further developing the content and structure of ITDA’s online learning platform, ELENA.

Abstract

Academic vocabulary is essential for university students’ success in scientific reading and writing, yet instructional approaches remain largely conventional and insufficiently connected from students’ cultural contexts. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a project‑based academic vocabulary flipbook integrating “Papuan local wisdom” for the English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong. The flipbook was developed using the ADDIE model through needs and curriculum analysis, instructional design, multimedia content creation using “Canva”, “YouTube”, and “Heyzine”, limited implementation with 20 students, and expert as well as user evaluation. Data were collected via questionnaires, expert validation rubrics, interviews, and pre‑ and post‑tests, and were analyzed descriptively and using a paired‑sample t‑test. The findings show high validity, with subject matter experts assigning a mean of 3.85 (“excellent”) for content, and media experts 3.82 (“excellent”) for technical quality; students rated the flipbook “good” (mean 3.41) across instructional and technical aspects. For practicality, experts and students reported overall scores of 96.18%, 95.57%, and 84.94% (“very practical”). Pre‑ and post‑tests showed an average gain of 10.30 points (from 55.10 to 65.40) in academic vocabulary scores, with t(19) = ‑3.884, p = 0.001, indicating a significant improvement. Qualitative feedback highlighted the flipbook’s “clarity, engagement, and cultural relevance” and its role in helping students correctly use academic vocabulary in meaningful, project‑based contexts. In sum, the developed flipbook is valid, practical, and effective for enhancing academic vocabulary learning in a culturally responsive manner.

Abstract

Higaonon [mba], spoken by an estimated 452,000 people in north-central Mindanao, remains undocumented despite its vitality as a ‘developing language.’ The present study addresses this gap by documenting the Opol variety in Misamis Oriental through a descriptive analysis of its phonology, morphology, and syntax. Data collected from tribal leaders using elicited words and sentence lists reveal a system comprising 16 consonant phonemes, five vowels, and phonemic stress. Lexical items are categorized as open classes (nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs) and closed classes (pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions, and linker). In alignment with other Philippine languages, Higaonon exhibits predicate-initial word order and includes both verbal and non-verbal sentence types. By contextualizing these findings with previous orthographic work by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (2023), which documented vowel variation among Higaonon communities in Bukidnon, Agusan, and Misamis Oriental, the study highlights both convergence and divergence within the language. The description of the Opol variety complements earlier orthographic observations and establishes a foundation for comparative dialectological research across Mindanao. In addition to its linguistic significance, the study supports cultural preservation, addresses prejudice against Indigenous Peoples, and serves as a resource for Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE).

Abstract

The global environmental crisis has led to increasing academic attention toward factors that influence pro-environmental behavior, including within religious education contexts such as Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). This study aims to conduct a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of empirical research examining the influence of religiosity and ecological awareness on pro-environmental behavior, as well as the role of social norms as a reinforcing factor within Islamic boarding school (pesantren) communities. The SLR process followed the PRISMA framework, including the stages of identification, screening, eligibility assessment, and final inclusion of articles. Literature was collected from the Scopus and Web of Science databases using inclusion criteria that required publications to be internationally recognized, published between 2015 and 2025, relevant to the themes of religiosity, ecological awareness, pro-environmental behavior, and social norms, and employing empirical research designs. The selected articles were analyzed thematically and conceptually to identify patterns of findings, consistency of results, and existing research gaps. Complementing the SLR, this study also employed bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer to map the intellectual structure, thematic clusters, and global research trends related to the topic. The SLR results indicate that religiosity functions as a moral foundation that strengthens individuals’ internal norms to protect the environment, while ecological awareness enhances cognitive understanding and readiness to engage in pro-environmental actions. Social norms, particularly within Islamic boarding school (pesantren) communities characterized by communal and hierarchical social structures, were found to reinforce the relationship between religiosity, ecological awareness, and pro-environmental behavior. The bibliometric analysis further revealed three dominant domains in the global literature: ecological consumption behavior, environmental crises, and reflective ecocritical narratives, which enrich the conceptual understanding of the SLR findings. Overall, this study highlights that the pro-environmental behavior of santri emerges from the interaction between religious values, ecological literacy, and institutional social norms. These findings provide both theoretical and practical implications for the development of more systematic, evidence-based, and sustainable eco-pesantren programs. Keywords : Religiosity, Ecological Awareness, Pro-Environmental Behavior, Social Norms, Islamic Boarding Schools.
