Abstract

Ephesians 1:13–14 contains the concepts of the Holy Spirit as a seal and a guarantee of salvation, which have been interpreted in various ways across Christian traditions. This has raised theological questions about the precise meaning and contemporary relevance of these terms for believers today. The subject of this study is text of Ephesians 1:13–14, while the object is the theological understanding of the concepts of sphragis (seal) and arrabōn (guarantee) in the context of salvation. The purpose of this research is to clarify the meaning of these concepts and explore their implications for Christian faith and practice. This qualitative study employs an exegetical and biblical hermeneutic approach. Data were collected through library research of biblical texts and theological literature, and analyzed through linguistic, historical, and theological synthesis. The findings reveal that the Holy Spirit affirms the believer’s identity as God’s possession, assures an unshakable salvation, guarantees the fulfillment of the eschatological inheritance, and calls believers to live in holiness. In conclusion, the role of the Holy Spirit as seal and guarantee offers a robust theological foundation for the doctrine of salvation and provides spiritual encouragement for believers in their daily faith journey.

Abstract

The growth of a healthy and sustainable church is largely determined by the effectiveness of its discipleship strategy. However, many local churches in Indonesia continue to face challenges such as ministry stagnation and low congregational engagement due to the absence of a model that encourages the active reproduction of disciples. This study aims to analyze a generative discipleship strategy based on Ephesians 4:11–13 as its theological foundation. The research employs a biblical textual study method, which combines exegetical analysis of the original meaning of the text within the context of the early church and hermeneutical interpretation for its application to the contemporary church. A literature review of primary and secondary theological sources supports the analysis in formulating a contextual and applicable discipleship model. The findings reveal that generative discipleship—which emphasizes multiplying disciples through training, mentoring, and commissioning—aligns with the fivefold ministry structure outlined in Ephesians 4 and is relevant in addressing current church needs. This strategy is effectively implemented through small groups, leadership training, and family- and community-based discipleship. In conclusion, generative discipleship serves as a vital catalyst for dynamic and transformative church growth. The study highlights the urgent need for churches to develop intentional and measurable discipleship systems, enabling each believer to function as an active disciple-maker in advancing the body of Christ.

Abstract

Sustainable church leadership is a pressing challenge for many local congregations amid rapid social and technological changes. The core issue addressed in this study is the absence of a structured mentoring strategy for nurturing prospective spiritual leaders, resulting in stagnation within the church’s leadership pipeline. The purpose of this study is to develop a leadership mentoring model based on Jesus Christ’s discipleship pattern as depicted in the Gospel of Mark, providing a relevant and applicable framework for local church contexts. The study employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach combined with exegetical analysis of Mark 1:16–20, 3:13–19, 6:7–13, and 16:15–18. The data were collected through a systematic review of biblical texts, and analyzed exegetically to identify the key stages and dynamics of Jesus’ mentoring of the disciples. The results reveal four distinct phases of the mentoring process: a divine call, character formation, active ministry engagement, and commissioning for global mission. In conclusion, these findings form the basis for the LEAD (Locate, Empower, Act, Deploy) mentoring model, offering a structured and practical approach for local churches to cultivate spiritually mature leaders who are both mission-ready and capable of reproducing this discipleship process across generations.
