Abstract

This study examines the development and influence of Salafi educational institutions in Indonesia on the national education system, particularly Islamic education. Employing a qualitative approach through literature review, the research traces the origins, classifications, and dissemination strategies of two major Salafi branches: Traditionalist and Reformist. The findings indicate that Salafi educational institutions have grown significantly since the 1980s, driven by financial support from Gulf countries and Middle Eastern alumni networks. Traditionalist Salafi institutions are generally exclusive, emphasizing a literalist-scriptural curriculum focused on Islamic creed (tauhid) while minimizing general education. In contrast, Reformist Salafis such as Muhammadiyah, Persis, and Al-Irsyad integrate religious teachings with modern science and general education. The impact of these institutions is ambivalent—while they offer a structured model of Islamic education, their rigid ideological stance may challenge national values of pluralism and tolerance.

Abstract

The environmental crisis presents a multidimensional challenge that is not only ecological but also moral and spiritual. In the context of Indonesia, Islamic student organizations hold strategic potential to play a role in environmental advocacy based on Islamic values. This study aims to examine the practice of eco-theological based environmental activism among Islamic student organizations, using a case study of the Indonesian Muslim Student Action Union (Kesatuan Aksi Mahasiswa Muslim Indonesia/KAMMI). Data were collected through interviews, observations, literature reviews, and document analysis of environmental programs carried out by the organization. The results show that although environmental issues have yet to become a priority agenda, there are several initiatives by KAMMI contributing to environmental preservation. The study found that the main challenges in mainstreaming eco-theology are the lack of Islamic-based environmental literacy and the dominance of socio-political issues in student movements. These findings recommend the integration of eco-theological content into the organization's cadre training curriculum and the strengthening of networks with environmental communities.

Abstract

Corruption remains a serious challenge in realizing clean and accountable governance in Indonesia. Higher education institutions play a strategic role in instilling anti-corruption values through the curriculum, as mandated by Regulation of the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education No. 33 of 2019. This study aimed to equip students with both knowledge and practical experience in anti-corruption education through a service learning approach. The program involved 20 students of the Environmental Health Study Program at Universitas Sriwijaya under the guidance of two field supervisors, implemented at two secondary schools: SMAN 1 Indralaya (representing a suburban context) and SMAN 15 Palembang (representing an urban context). The activities were conducted in three stages: pre-implementation (classroom learning and action planning), implementation (counseling and socialization using presentations, posters, and interactive games), and post-implementation (evaluation through pre-tests, post-tests, and feedback questionnaires). The results showed a significant increase in students’ knowledge and awareness, with 97% of participants stating that the program was beneficial and 100% committing to uphold integrity values and reject corruption. This program not only strengthened awareness among secondary school students but also enhanced university students’ skills in communication, leadership, and integrity values. Thus, integrating anti-corruption education through service learning provides a concrete contribution to shaping student change agents in society’s collective effort to prevent corruption.
