Abstract

Background: Preliminary studies reveal a notable challenge for English teachers: the difficulty in creating learning materials that effectively meet students' needs. In response, researchers have developed innovative listening materials rooted in the local wisdom and religious values of Gresik, utilizing advanced text-to-speech applications. Objective: This initiative aims to empower English teachers in Gresik by sharing research findings related to these materials. Our goal is to enable teachers to implement these resources in their classrooms and inspire them to create their own engaging learning materials using text-to-speech technology. Method: We engaged with four Madrasah Aliyah schools through socialization techniques, concluding with a feedback questionnaire. Results: The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with 95.2% of teachers affirming that the materials aligned with their educational needs. Participants demonstrated significant skill development, transitioning from a lack of knowledge about the application to feeling motivated to create their own resources. Conclusion: This initiative not only enhances teachers’ technical skills but also nurtures their soft skills. By embracing innovative teaching methods, educators are encouraged to tailor learning materials to meet the diverse needs of their students while leveraging Artificial Intelligence to enrich the educational experience.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe purposes of this study were 1) to analyze the effectiveness of the congklak-assisted disco game learning model towards increasing students' understanding of the concept of division; and 2) analyzing the application of the congklak-assisted disco game learning model to increase understanding of the concept of division in terms of student cooperation. Sampling technique used cluster random sampling. This type of research is a quasi-experimental (quasi-experimental). This research was conducted on class II students for the 2022/2023 academic year with a total of 25 students in the experimental class and 28 students in the control class. The experimental class applies the disco game with the help of congklak media and the control class applies the expository method. The instruments used in the study were observation sheets and tests. Data collection was carried out by means of observation, tests and documentation. Data analysis used quantitative descriptive. The results showed that the results for the one sample t-test, independent sample t–test, and paired t-test obtained p values of 0.000, 0.001 and 0.000 respectively. Thus the disco game assisted by congklak media is more effective in increasing cooperation and understanding of division than the expository method. Keywords: disco game, congklak media, division

Abstract

In this era of globalization, the demand for ESP instruction is increasing. ESP instructors must develop instruction suitable to the student's needs. This research aims to explore the strategies of the lecturer in teaching ESP students, to acknowledge the improvement in English language skills, and to gain the students’ perceptions of the implemented strategies. The participants are the lecturer and the students who take Early Childhood Islamic Education and Islamic Elementary School Teacher Education programs. This research used classroom action research design. The data were obtained by observing the ESP instruction implemented during the learning process, pre and post-tests, and the students’ responses. The results of the study revealed that ESP instructions or strategies used by the lecturer improved the English skills of students such as ability in speaking, pronunciation, and language use.  The students’ perceptions of the strategies were also positive. They viewed that these strategies helped them understand the learning concept. Overall, the implementation of these strategies led to enhanced student learning outcomes and proficiency in English speaking skills.

Abstract

Background: In academic contexts, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one of the key requirements for career advancement, further study, scholarship opportunities, and entering the workforce. For senior high school students, the TOEFL poses a significant challenge when pursuing higher education or scholarship opportunities at domestic and international universities. Objective: This activity aimed to provide insights into the importance of the TOEFL, offer practical tips and strategies for taking the test, and facilitate a TOEFL prediction test. Method: A total of eighty students from MAN 1 Gresik participated in the TOEFL workshop, which consisted of three stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation. The evaluation was conducted through student interviews, incorporating three Likert-scale questions and two open-ended questions to assess the effectiveness of the workshop and participants’ satisfaction. Results: The results of the workshop indicated that students need to practice TOEFL tasks intensively to achieve optimal scores. The challenges faced by participants drew the attention of both the school and the community service team to improve support, particularly in addressing technical difficulties encountered during online test practice. Conclusion: This community service initiative contributes to the school’s efforts to enhance students’ English proficiency, particularly in assisting twelfth-grade students in preparing for admission to their desired universities.
