Abstract

Business tourism, particularly the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, has played a crucial role in enhancing the competitiveness of tourism destinations. This study analyzed the role of business tourism in strengthening Medan’s destination competitiveness from the perspective of students in the Tourism Study Program at Universitas Katolik Santo Thomas. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys with students and qualitative interviews with industry practitioners and academics. The findings indicated that while Medan’s MICE infrastructure is relatively adequate, it remains suboptimal for attracting large-scale international events. The destination’s promotional strategies were found to be ineffective, and stakeholder collaboration lacked cohesion. Students were identified as having significant potential to support business tourism digitalization through technology-driven marketing innovations. The ABDIK (Business Tourism Digital Activation by Students) concept was introduced as a novel approach to empower students in MICE development. The study concluded that business tourism is a strategic driver for destination competitiveness but requires stronger synergy among the government, industry, academia, and local communities to achieve sustainable growth.

Abstract

Silau Laut Mangrove Tourism in Silo Baru Village, Asahan Regency has developed into a community-based ecotourism destination. This study aims to assess the balance between ecological conservation and tourism development at the site. Using qualitative methods, this study employs field observations, stakeholder interviews, and policy analysis. Findings show that although tourism boosts the local economy, significant challenges exist in preserving mangrove ecosystems, particularly from increased tourism activities and oil palm expansion. Strategic recommendations include strict regulations, community empowerment, environmental education, and eco-friendly infrastructure development. Integration of government programs like BRGM reinforces sustainability. The study contributes to developing a sustainable ecotourism management model integrating ecological, social, and economic perspectives.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program aimed to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Sugihen Village apparatus in Juhar District, Karo Regency, by developing a participatory framework for resilient tourism. The program applied a participatory capacity building approach using the Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) method, which involved all village officials in socialization, group discussions, and the formulation of an initial action plan. Through workshops and interactive sessions, participants gained a deeper understanding of Community-Based Tourism (CBT) and the importance of collaborative and sustainable governance in tourism development. The results indicate an increased awareness and understanding among village officials regarding their strategic role as local leaders in tourism resilience. Furthermore, the activity successfully built institutional commitment and produced a preliminary participatory framework to guide broader community involvement. Nonetheless, certain limitations were identified, particularly in technical skills such as digital marketing and destination management, requiring follow-up training and mentoring. Overall, this program demonstrates that the success of resilient tourism development must begin with the empowerment of local actors through continuous and collaborative social learning. Sugihen Village holds strong potential to become a best practice model for community-based tourism development in the Karo region.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of cultural commodification in the tourism development of the Karo region in North Sumatra, Indonesia, an area rich in traditional architecture, rituals, oral arts, and symbolic textiles. Despite its cultural vibrancy, the region faces increasing pressures from tourism growth and digital media exposure, which have led to the transformation of cultural expressions for commercial consumption. The research focuses on how these commodification processes reshape cultural meanings, alter community agency, and challenge the sustainability of Karo cultural identity. The study aims to classify the forms of cultural commodification in Karo tourism and assess their implications for cultural preservation. Using a qualitative methodology, the research integrates a systematic review of literature, analysis of tourism-related documents, and examination of digital cultural representations on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. The analysis identifies three forms of commodification: (1) performative commodification, where cultural ceremonies and performances are adapted for tourists; (2) visual commodification, where Karo culture is aestheticized in digital media; and (3) material commodification, seen in the commercialization of cultural symbols like Uis Gara motifs. While these practices create economic opportunities, they also risk diminishing cultural depth and authenticity. The study concludes that enhanced cultural governance, community participation, and responsible creative economy development are crucial for long-term cultural sustainability.
