Abstract

This experiment aimed to study the formation of scalps and  banana shoots 'Tanduk' in vitro in response to thidiazuron (TDZ). Shoot explants measuring ± (1 x 1 x 1) cm3 were cultured in precondition media (MS+ 5 mg/l benzyladenine) for 4 weeks, then transferred to treatment media, namely MS + TDZ. This experiment was carried out using a completely randomized design with 3 replications and 7 treatments of TDZ concentrations (0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2; 2.5; 3; 3.5; 4.0 mg/l).  Each experimental unit consisted of 5 bottles, each containing one explant. Observations of scalp number were carried out at 8 weeks of age. The scalps were subcultured on MS+5mg/l BA media to induce shoots. After 8 weeks in the shoot induction medium, the number of shoots was recorded.  The results showed that at 8 weeks on the culture all of the explants formed scalps, with the highest number of scalps (6 scalps/explant) was at 1 mg/l TDZ.  The scalp number decreased to 4.4 to 3.5/explant as the TDZ concentration increased from 1.5 to 4 mg/l. After 8 weeks on shoot induction media containing 5 mg/l BA, the highest number of shoots (3.8 shoots/explant) was obtained on the scalp from the 0.5 mg/l TDZ treatment. The shoot number decreased to (3.2-1.9/explant) with increasing TDZ concentrations from 1.0 to 4.0 mg/l.Keywords: Tanduk, plantain, thidiazuron, in vitro, scalp.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of auxin types and their concentrations on rooting of the rootstock cuttings and BA on grafting. First, IBA, NAA or IBA+NAA, each at 0, 1000, 2000, and 3000 ppm were used as treatments to study rooting of Piper colubrinum. In the second experiment, BA (0 and 50 ppm) was applied to P. nigrum scion clones of Natar-1 and Petaling-2, before being grafted to the rootstocks. Results showed, that all types of auxins (IBA, NAA or IBA+NAA) induced rooting and shoot growth, and the increase of auxin concentrations led to the increase of rooting. However, their effectiveness was different. NAA and IBA+NAA were superior to IBA, and at 2000 ppm, IBA+NAA resulted in the best plant growth, as indicated by higher values of both rooting and shoot growth parameters. Compared to control, BA treatment on scions resulted in higher grafting success (80% vs. 93%) for Natar-1, and (73% vs.100%) for Petaling-2 clones.  BA treatment on scions also induced more calluses in the graft union and better shoot growth. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the use of BA to increase success of grafting between P. nigrum and P. colubrinum.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Aglaonema 'Dud Unyamanee' is a popular ornamental plant facing constraints from slow and limited conventional propagation methods. Benzyladenine (BA) is known to stimulate lateral shoot growth by breaking apical dominance. This study aimed to determine the most effective concentration of BA for inducing lateral shoots in Aglaonema 'Dud Unyamanee' via ex-vitro application. The research used a single-factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four BA concentrations (0, 100, 200, and 300 ppm). The solution was applied by spraying the stem base once a week for four weeks. Observations were made up to 12 weeks after application , measuring shoot emergence percentage, shoot number, shoot length, shoot diameter, and leaf count. The results indicated that BA application had a significant effect. The 300 ppm BA treatment (P3) showed the best results, achieving 100% shoot emergence by week 4 , whereas the control (0 ppm) only reached 41.67% by week 12. The 300 ppm concentration also yielded the highest shoot count (6.83) , shoot length (12.93 cm) , shoot diameter (8.92 mm) , and leaf count (13.58). It is concluded that a 300 ppm BA application is most effective for accelerating initiation and enhancing the growth of Aglaonema 'Dud Unyamanee' lateral shoots.

Abstract

Cucumber production relies heavily on high-quality seeds, yet prolonged storage often leads to a significant decline in seed vigor and viability, characterized by reduced germination and non-uniform growth. To address this challenge, invigoration techniques through seed priming offer a promising solution to revitalize aged seeds, which also aligns with global sustainability efforts in preserving genetic resources and ensuring food security. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of various invigoration treatments in enhancing the viability and vigor of expired cucumber seeds from different storage periods. The research utilized a factorial split-plot design with two factors, consisting of invigoration treatments (Control, KH₂PO₄, PEG, and Distilled Water) and storage periods (9 years, 7 years, and 5 years). The variables observed included radicle emergence (RE) at 24 and 48 hours, germination capacity, percentage of abnormal seedlings, and vigor index. The results showed that all invigoration treatments significantly improved seed performance compared to the control. The KH₂PO₄ treatment was the most effective for rapid improvement within 24 hours, showing a strong correlation (R=0.99) with increased vigor and a reduction in abnormal seedlings (R=0.85). However, distilled water showed the best performance for 48-hour RE, particularly when applied to 5-year stored seeds, reaching an 88% germination rate and the highest vigor index of 80%. In conclusion, invigoration is a viable method to restore the quality of aged seeds, with KH₂PO₄ and distilled water being recommended for optimizing the performance of specific seed lots. Future studies could further explore the field establishment of these invigorated seeds under diverse environmental stress conditions.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to determine the effect of planting media composition and fertilizer dosage. Controlled Release Fertilizer (CRF) on the growth of Aglaonema 'Dud Unyamanee' as an effort to increase fertilization efficiency. Methodology: The experiment was conducted in greenhouse using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The first factor is the planting medium (husk, husk + burnt husk, husk + cocopeat) and the second factor was the CRF dose (0 g and 2 g per plant). Observations were made on vegetative growth variables 10 weeks after planting. Results: Data analysis showed that 2 g CRF application significantly increased the number of leaves, leaf area, number of roots, root length, and stem diameter compared to the control. There was a significant interaction between the growing medium and CRF dose. Findings: Combination of rice husk media +cocopeatwith a CRF dose of 2 gr (M3D1) it was proven to produce the best growth in all observation variables. Novelty: This research applies the technology of slow release fertilizer (CRF) which has not been widely explored in Aglaonema cultivation to overcome the problem of inefficiency of conventional fertilizers. Originality: This study offers specific solutions for the use of media-based cocopeat which is combined with CRF to optimize nutrient absorption and reduce the environmental impact on potted ornamental plants. Conclusion: The use of mixed media of husk and cocopeat accompanied by the application of 2 grams of CRF is highly recommended to stimulate optimal growth of Aglaonema. Paper Type: Research Articles.

Abstract

Improving oil palm production can be achieved through better cultivation management, including proper nursery practices. The quality of seedlings at the early growth stage plays a crucial role in determining field performance, making efficient fertilization essential from the pre-nursery phase. One of the fertilization technologies developed to improve nutrient uptake efficiency is the application of Controlled Release Fertilizer (CRF). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of CRF compared with conventional NPK fertilizer on the growth of oil palm seedlings. The experiment was conducted for three months using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments: no fertilizer (P0), NPK (P1), NPK + CRF (P2), and CRF (P3). Data were analyzed using ANOVA at a 5% significance level, followed by the LSD test when significant differences were detected. The results showed that treatments P2, P3, and P4 produced better growth responses than the control in all observed parameters, including plant height, number of leaves, leaf greenness, stem diameter, and leaf area. Fertilizer application significantly improved seedling growth, while CRF, either applied alone or in combination with NPK, produced growth responses comparable to conventional fertilization. These findings indicate that CRF has the potential to be used as an effective fertilization alternative to support oil palm seedling growth in the pre-nursery.
