Abstract

Parents play a crucial role in fostering children’s empathy and care for nature. However, in the modern era, these values are often neglected, leading to future behaviors such as indifference toward environmental destruction, improper waste disposal, and the exploitation of natural resources. Literary ecocriticism offers an alternative solution through children’s literature as a medium to instill ecological awareness. This study aims to explore forms of children’s sensitivity to nature in the short story Aṭfāl al-Ghābah by Muḥammad ‘Aṭīyah al-‘Ibrāshī, analyzed from a literary ecocritical perspective. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through reading and note-taking, then analyzed in three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that children’s awareness is reflected in behaviors such as obeying the deer’s advice, avoiding harm to animals, rejecting exploitation, expressing joy in the forest’s beauty, feeling sadness upon leaving it, and demonstrating awareness of forest preservation. This study suggests that children’s literature can be an effective medium for environmental education, helping to foster a generation that respects and protects nature.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper underscores the necessity of proper morphology and syntax knowledge, thereby improving grammar mastery in English, before undertaking the Specialist Education Program for Doctors (PPDS). ‘Morphology’ refers to the linguistic branch that studies the internal structures of individual words and how they are formed, whereas ‘syntax’ points to the structures of sentences and how they are formed as phrases, clauses, and sentences. Decent mastery of both aspects will significantly improve the scores in English grammar, thereby considerably improving PPDS participants’ opportunity to obtain high scores and paving the way to better performance in their professional careers. The research involved a final sample of 20 participants, who received targeted grammar instruction over four sessions totaling eight hours. Data were collected through a 50-item grammar composition test designed to measure syntactic and structural understanding. Statistical analysis revealed an increase in the mean score from 53.8 (pretest) to 61.8 (posttest). A paired-sample t-test indicated a significant improvement in students’ performance (t = 2.582, df = 19, p < 0.05, approximate). These results suggest that systematic syntax instruction can enhance learners’ grammatical competence in English. Implications for EFL classroom practice and future pedagogical research are discussed.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of verbs in the 2024 East Java Gubernatorial Debate from the perspective of Norman Fairclough's discourse analysis, which includes text, discourse practice, and social practice. The main objective of this research is to identify the verbs most frequently used by each pair of candidates (paslon) using the AntConc software. The method employed is qualitative descriptive, where data is collected from debate transcripts converted into .txt format and analyzed to identify the dominant verbs. The results show thirteen commonly used verbs, such as “obtain”, “ensure”, “present”, and “give”. The Luluk-Lukman pair frequently used the verbs “ensure”, “obtain”, and “give” to emphasize welfare; Khofifah-Emil used “present”, “build”, and “give” to highlight achievements; while Tri Rismaharini-Gus Hans used “give”, “obtain”, and “make” to focus on education and social togetherness. This research highlights the importance of critical discourse analysis in understanding political communication strategies and can be further developed to analyze political debates at other local levels.
