Abstract

The capacity to memorise plays a pivotal role in Islamic educational tradition, particularly in the preservation of the authenticity of teachings through the transmission of the Qur’an and hadith. In the literary work Ta’lim al-Muta’allim, composed by al-Zarnuji, a seminal text in its field, a range of methodologies is presented for the purpose of enhancing memory. These methodologies encompass a variety of approaches, including diligent study, augmented worship, and the ingestion of specific substances such as honey, kundar, and red wine. The present study aims to examine these methods scientifically in order to determine their relevance to contemporary findings. Utilising a literature review and content analysis approach, this study examines the text of the book Ta’lim al-Muta’allim and compares it with the results of recent scientific research in the fields of cognitive science and health. The findings of the study demonstrate that the methods employed to enhance memory in the book can be categorised into three distinct classifications. Firstly, there is a need to acknowledge the scientific methods that have been proven to be effective. Such methods include diligent study, increasing worship, and consuming honey. Secondly, methods with potential scientific validity, such as the consumption of kundar and red wine, which have shown positive results in some preliminary studies, are also recommended. Thirdly, there are methods that have yet to be scientifically validated. These include the use of a miswak, reducing food intake, and consuming foods that reduce phlegm. These findings suggest that some of the classical educational heritage in the book remains relevant and can be integrated with modern scientific approaches. Consequently, al-Zarnuji’s treatise is not only spiritually valuable but also has the potential to contribute to the development of contemporary learning methods.

Abstract

This study examines the presence of religious moderation values in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) textbooks for elementary students in Grades 1-6 and proposes strategies to strengthen the internalization of these values in classroom practice. The research adopts a qualitative approach through a literature-based study, analyzing PAI textbooks as primary sources and relevant scholarly works as supporting references. The primary data consist of PAI textbooks for Grades 1-6, which were examined in depth. The findings show that the presentation of religious-moderation values in the textbooks remains varied. Several materials include moderation values only implicitly, such as encouragement to act kindly or to care for others. Other sections present moderation values more explicitly, including respect for diverse backgrounds, tolerance toward Indonesia’s religious plurality, and appreciation of cultural, ethnic, and opinion-based differences. The study also identifies inconsistencies across grade levels, with some materials showing no indication of moderation values at all. Based on these findings, the study recommends strengthening moderation values through clearer learning outcomes, the use of supportive instructional activities (such as daily stories, emotion cards, or a friendly corner), and improved collaboration between teachers and parents to ensure consistent formation of moderation values.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the thought of Nashr Hamid Abu Zaid and the ideology of Khawarij, focusing on the analysis of the concept of "Mafhum al-Nashsh".  As a progressive Muslim thinker, Abu Zaid offers a critical approach to textual understanding in Islam that emphasizes the importance of context and dynamic interpretation. On the other hand, Khawarij is known for its literal and radical approach to religious texts.  By analyzing Abu Zaid's works, this article identifies the intersection and the fundamental differences between Abu Zaid's critical approach and the Khawarij's textual views.  This study examines Abu Zaid's response to the Khawarij ideology and assesses the implications of this relationship for contemporary Islamic understanding and efforts to counter religious extremism.  The research results are expected to make a significant contribution to understanding the dialectic between progressive and literal thought in Islamic discourse. Studi ini menyelidiki hubungan antara pemikiran Nashr Hamid Abu Zaid dan ideologi Khawarij, dengan penekanan pada analisis konsep "Mafhum al-Nashsh". Sebagai pemikir Muslim progresif, Abu Zaid menawarkan pendekatan kritis terhadap pemahaman tekstual dalam Islam yang menekankan pentingnya konteks dan interpretasi dinamis. Di sisi lain, Khawarij dikenal karena pendekatannya yang harfiah dan radikal terhadap teks-teks agama. Melalui analisis karya-karya Abu Zaid, artikel ini mengidentifikasi persimpangan serta perbedaan mendasar antara pendekatan kritis Abu Zaid dan pandangan tekstual Khawarij.  Studi ini tidak hanya mengungkapkan bagaimana Abu Zaid menanggapi ideologi Khawarij, tetapi juga mengevaluasi implikasi dari hubungan ini terhadap pemahaman Islam kontemporer dan upaya untuk melawan ekstremisme agama. Hasil penelitian diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi yang signifikan dalam memahami dialektika antara pemikiran progresif dan harfiah dalam wacana Islam.
