Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the philosophical construction of leadership simplicity in the digital space through ontological, epistemological, and axiological perspectives. Design/methodology/approach: This study employs a qualitative, netnographic design. Data were collected from 518 public comments on Instagram posts from the @arsip.peristiwa account featuring figures of simple leadership, along with interaction data in the form of likes and shares. Purposive sampling was used to ensure data relevance. Analysis was conducted through thematic analysis combined with philosophical interpretation. Data validity was maintained through triangulation, audit trails, and critical reflection. Findings: Leadership simplicity is constructed in a multidimensional manner. Ontologically, simplicity is understood as the authentic essence of leadership. Epistemologically, knowledge about simplicity is shaped through collective memory, digital narratives, and social comparison. Axiologically, simplicity functions as a primary moral value, a tool for social critique, and a projection of future hopes. Practical Implications: For leaders and practitioners, simplicity must be managed not only as an internal value but also as a consistent public representation in the digital space. Originality/value: This study introduces the concept of the Digital Moral Ontology of Leadership Simplicity as a new theoretical contribution that expands understanding of leadership in the digital age, while also opening up new methodological approaches through the combination of netnography and philosophical analysis. Abstract

This research departs from a conceptual unease about the importance of recognizing talent early in the framework of Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s thought. In this study, ‘talent’ refers to students’ inherent aptitudes, abilities, or natural potentials that can be recognized and developed. In his view, a free human being is an individual who can understand their potential from a young age through a continuous process of growth into adulthood. However, the reality of education shows a gap between awareness of the importance of talent and the ability to recognize it concretely. Here, ‘normative awareness’ means students’ understanding of the general or accepted importance of knowing their abilities, while ‘reflective awareness’ refers to their personal, conscious recognition of their own talents. This study uses a descriptive, quantitative approach and a survey method, involving 78 second-semester students from three mathematics classes. The research instrument consists of 12 questions that measure perception and self-awareness related to talent. The research results show that all respondents (100%) stated the importance of knowing their talents from an early age, but all (100%) also admitted they did not know their talents for sure. These findings indicate a disjunction between normative awareness and reflective awareness within the students. Theoretically, this condition indicates a weak guidance process within the education system that has not yet helped students fully recognize their potential. This research provides important implications for the development of a more reflective, dialogical, and individual potential-exploration-oriented, student-centered education model

Abstract

The changing paradigm of higher education in the modern era demands the integration of intellectual and spiritual development among university students. However, many educational institutions still separate these two dimensions, resulting in a gap between academic knowledge and moral character formation. This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) education in enhancing students’ intellectual capacity through an integrative approach grounded in Islamic values. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the research utilized in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation involving one pesantren head, four teachers, and twelve university students at the An-Nasuchiyah Student Islamic Boarding School in Kudus, Central Java. The findings reveal that pesantren education plays a strategic role in fostering critical thinking, self-regulated learning, and autonomy through the integration of religious and academic activities. Intellectual traditions such as classical text studies (kajian kitab), bahtsul masā’il (collaborative scholarly deliberation), and muhadharah (public speaking practice) not only strengthen religious literacy but also cultivate analytical and argumentative reasoning skills. The pesantren’s disciplined routines and communal life effectively nurture resilience, social awareness, and ethical consciousness among students. This study underscores pesantren as a holistic educational model that harmonizes spirituality, intellectuality, and morality as the foundation for developing ethically grounded academic individuals. The study concludes that pesantren must continue adapting to technological innovation and research-based curricula to remain relevant in the digital era

Abstract

This study analyses how Total Quality Management (TQM) is implemented in the governance of elite Islamic boarding schools through the interaction between the Visionary, Integrated, and Prestigious (VIP) orientation and maqāṣid al-sharī'ah as an ethical control system. The study employs a qualitative approach with a multi-case study design at Pesantren Ar-Rohmah Putra Malang, IBS Ar-Rohmah Putri Malang, and Pesantren Islam Al-Irsyad Tengaran. Data were collected through document analysis, semi-structured interviews with 22 informants, and participatory observation, and were subsequently analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and cross-case comparisons. The results indicate that TQM serves as a stabilising mechanism for the quality management process through system strengthening, continuous evaluation, accountability, and evidence-based decision-making. The implementation of TQM is influenced by VIP Orientation, which reinforces strategic vision, institutional integration, and institutional legitimacy. At the same time, maqāṣid al-sharī'ah functions as an ethical control mechanism that ensures all managerial practices remain oriented toward Islamic values. The interaction of these three elements forms the Spiritual Quality Governance (SQG) framework, which integrates managerial effectiveness, institutional legitimacy, and moral-spiritual responsibility in pesantren governance. This study is limited to three elite pesantren; therefore, its results cannot yet be generalised to all types of pesantren in Indonesia. Consequently, future research is recommended to test the relevance of the SQG framework across various models of Islamic educational institutions using a comparative approach or mixed-methods design to expand its empirical validity and theoretical development

Abstract

Current Umrah pilgrim guidance emphasizes ritual procedures over spiritual learning, leaving the reflective and participatory aspects underdeveloped. To address this gap, this community service activity developed a participatory-reflective spiritual guidance model to enhance pilgrims’ religious learning during Umrah. The program engaged 127 pilgrims from PT Azzahra Berkah Ilahi in Demak Regency through reflective manasik, worship practice simulations, intensive guidance in Mecca and Medina, and post-worship spiritual reflection. Data were collected through participatory observation, reflective interviews, documentation, and field notes, and analyzed descriptively and reflectively. Findings reveal four main stages in pilgrims’ spiritual development: reflective orientation, embodied ritual learning, guidance in sacred spaces, and post-worship reflection and internalization. The Spiritual Participatory Immersion approach enables pilgrims to move beyond procedural ritual mastery to deep, reflective, and transformational learning. This study thus demonstrates a model that fosters a more humanistic, pedagogical, and spiritually transformative Umrah guidance

Abstract

Research on student well-being in Islamic educational settings has primarily focused on psychological, spiritual, and instructional dimensions, while the pedagogical role of environmental aesthetics rooted in Qur’anic teachings remains underexplored. Existing studies have rarely examined how the Qur’anic concept of beauty can be translated into an educational framework that supports student well-being in contemporary Islamic boarding schools. This study aims to conceptualize Qur’anic beauty as a form of environmental pedagogy and examine its contribution to student well-being in Indonesian pesantren. This research employed a qualitative integrative design that combined thematic Qur’anic interpretation (tafsīr mawḍū‘ī) based on Tafsīr al-Jalālayn with contextual field research in three Islamic boarding schools. Data were collected through thematic analysis of Qur’anic verses, observations, semi-structured interviews with 22 key informants, and institutional document analysis. The findings reveal that Qur’anic beauty is articulated through concepts such as jamāl, ḥusn, zīnah, sakīnah, mīzān, fiṭrah, and nūr, which are synthesized into six dimensions: visual–aesthetic beauty, moral–social beauty, psychological calmness, harmony and balance, fitrah-based human-centered beauty, and spiritual–illuminative beauty. These dimensions are embedded in physical spaces, social interactions, institutional culture, and spiritual practices within pesantren. Beauty functions not merely as an aesthetic attribute but as a pedagogical mechanism that promotes emotional stability, social security, spiritual resilience, and meaningful learning engagement. This study contributes to Qur’anic and Islamic educational scholarship by developing an environmental pedagogical framework grounded in Qur’anic conceptions of beauty.

Abstract

Current research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education predominantly focuses on formal settings and technical advances. There is a notable lack of empirical studies on informal Islamic social learning, religious identity development, and digital equity, particularly among marginalized groups such as street children. This study investigates the influence of AI in mediating social learning, shaping religious identity, and expanding educational opportunities for street children. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach in Jepara, Kudus, Pati, and Rembang, the research engages lecturers, student assistants, and street children through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The results indicate that AI does not replace human relationships but acts as a mediator that supports collective dialogue. AI technology offers a common reference for interpreting religious practices and reflecting on life experiences. This process strengthens contextual religious identity and increases access to learning. The integration of technology, community, and Islamic values presents a transformative framework for inclusive education and digital equity.
