Abstract

This study explores the use of multimodal features in e-textbooks for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Indonesian high schools. For easier reference, the e-books are called EC-LE and LT-CF. Both were selected as they address topics that help with both learning a language and acquiring knowledge about the environment. The results revealed that the use of visuals, such as images, graphs, illustrations, and QR codes, in e-textbooks significantly facilitated students' comprehension. These features also increase the viability of abstract learning concepts relating to environmental issues. Both e-textbooks employ diverse modalities to cater to various learning styles. To visually represent environmental situations, EC-LE uses dynamic images and colorful layouts. These characteristics are particularly attractive to individuals who learn best through visual means. However, LT-CF effectively conveyed the environmental issue using informative visuals and detailed explanations, making it well-suited for students who prefer structured learning methods. Integrating multimodal components into these electronic textbooks aligns with educational concepts like constructivism and social semiotics. These principles emphasize the significance of visual and interactive tools in facilitating learning. QR codes in LT-CF enhance student engagement and digital literacy by connecting to multimedia resources that offer dynamic explanations and real-life illustrations, effectively complementing written information. These multimodal components enhance language proficiency, increase environmental awareness in EFL instruction, foster critical thinking in students, and offer a wide choice of instructional materials. Using this study's findings, educators can gain valuable insights and apply ways to use multimodalities in e-textbooks to improve the quality of their teaching.

Abstract

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers will encounter challenges while instructing students from diverse backgrounds. They will overcome these challenges when they use strategically designed, well-conducted lessons that have the potential to enhance students' engagement and proficiency in communication greatly. This research studied the best practices in planning and delivering English-speaking lessons to EFL students in China and Indonesia, utilizing a self-analysis of the teaching practice approach. This study clarifies the principles underlying the inception of two speaking exercises, namely "Friendship Soup" and "Chain Story," and provides precise insight into the techniques employed in students speaking practices. The findings emphasized the students' enthusiastic engagement, favorable dispositions towards the assignments, and favorable responses to the prompt feedback they got. Another advantageous result of such tasks is the enhanced proficiency of the students in speaking. By looking at EFL speaking activities from a global point of view, this study adds to what is known by making them suitable for students from a range of backgrounds and points of view. The findings have significance for educators seeking to enhance student involvement and selfassurance in speaking to others and to improve their level of EFL instruction in diverse settings. Abstract

In this era, technological developments increasingly show complex influences on cultural discourse due to the tremendous speed of information production. Language as a product of culture is essential as a reflective tool for every social practice. Using abbreviations on social media, Twitter shows a tendency for language acceleration. This study aims to explore some of the emergences of abbreviation forms and patterns on Twitter social media, then explore the function of meaning generated through a dromological perspective. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Data was collected through note-taking techniques in Twitter messages from 1 – 14 March 2023 in the Malang City region. The findings of abbreviations in social media Twitter consist of 28 alphabetisms, 17 acronyms, and 18 clippings. Through a dromological perspective, it was found that the communication model through abbreviation experiences hyper-reality, shallow meaning, banality, wear and tear, and identity fragmentation. The number of uses of abbreviated words on social media cannot be a benchmark as a new lexeme in KBBI, and it is recommended that a comprehensive critical verification will become a counter-model to this kind of speed logic.

Abstract

Evaluation of teaching practice is often conducted by the university assessment board through a single instance of seeing a class through a walk-through observation. Oftentimes, teachers would receive either positive or unintelligible comments from the evaluation board. Ultimately, teachers must gather information from several sources, including peer criticism, reflection on educational theories or practices, self-assessment, and students' appraisals of instruction, to make changes to their lessons and teaching tactics. During this self-study, we examined and analyzed students' assessments of the teacher from the viewpoint of a critical friend. A total of 262 Chinese students enrolled in the English Speaking I course participated in the end-of-semester evaluation. We gathered data with a semi-structured questionnaire through the Zoho Survey platform. The data were subsequently examined using descriptive statistics and critical friend feedback. The teacher received both commendation and criticism in the evaluation. By carefully reflecting on the successful implementation, the teacher can use critical feedback from a trusted colleague to plan and develop alternate strategies to address any areas that need improvement in their teaching techniques.

Abstract

Academic ethics are supposed to be followed by the academic community, but certain members are engaging in practices that are against these rules and ethics. Students can easily be influenced by these violators to commit the same act. A more efficient approach is necessary for instilling academic integrity among students. The purpose of this study is to analyze case-study-based learning techniques that can enhance academic integrity among students. The role of academic integrity is crucial in shaping individuals to be honest, fair, and ethical when carrying out their academic duties. Academic integrity is linked to the presence of faculty role models, student morality, and the incorporation of religious teachings, as demonstrated by similar research. This study will examine instructional design using Merrill's model and artificial intelligence to generate learning cases that instill academic integrity values in students Preliminary results from ongoing research suggest that utilizing a case-based approach with artificial intelligence can enhance students' understanding and application of academic integrity. Achieving academic integrity among students can be achieved through case-based learning practices that are powered by artificial intelligence. Students can internalize academic integrity values and apply them in their academic activities through the integration of Merrill's instructional design model. Abstract

Reflecting on the use of learning media will help students decide on a quality and user-friendly design. Thus, this study examines the experiences of second-year students in the Buddhist Religious Education program at Institut Nalanda who participated in the online distance "Learning Media" course during the 2023-2024 academic year. The researcher aims to understand the students' perspectives on the impact of instructional and practical equipment on their learning. This study used a case study technique, specifically the classroom research strategy, to collect data from 37 student forum posts on Google Classroom. Following a solitary session of asynchronous lectures, comprising a teaching module and three audio recordings, the students produced these postings. The researcher employed qualitative descriptive analysis, utilizing QDA Miner, to discern the principal themes and conclusions derived from the data. The data indicates that students had a variety of experiences using both instructional and practical equipment. Students experience the use of teaching aids to facilitate science experiments, classroom demonstrations, and accounting learning and support arts and sports classes. This study found that students have positive impressions of these media based on their learning experiences. Reflecting on their own learning experiences can inspire students to develop their learning media as a class project. The findings of this study can assist educators in designing learning environments that more effectively prepare students for academic and professional challenges. Research on other cohorts can be conducted as longitudinal studies. Comparing students' experience of on-site and online classes can also be done as a future study.
