Abstract

This narrative review synthesizes empirical and theoretical insights on how emotions—such as enjoyment and anxiety—shape language learning. Literature was collected from Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and ERIC using keywords related to emotions, motivation, and affective dynamics in SLA. Positive emotions were found to enhance motivation, cognitive engagement, and communicative competence, while negative emotions, particularly anxiety, constrained attention and memory. Motivation emerged as a mediator linking emotions to achievement, and teacher–student interactions and peer support were identified as key drivers of emotional well-being. Cross-cultural evidence shows that systemic and cultural contexts significantly shape emotional experiences, while technology and affect-sensitive tools reduce anxiety and increase engagement. Policies that integrate socio-emotional learning, teacher training, and culturally responsive practices are essential. Future research should adopt longitudinal and mixed-method approaches to capture the dynamic interplay of emotions in SLA.

Abstract

This paper examines how an Indonesian live-streamer and his audiences create a hybrid communal identity by using vulgar language and code-mixing with reference to the popular YouTube livestream @deandeankt. With the digital medium transforming the world into a global village, the streaming culture in Indonesia provides a distinct perspective into how localized linguistic practices interact with global trends in the internet. The interpretivist-constructivist paradigm applied in the current case study research was aimed at understanding the way language and interaction produced hybrid identities. It gathered linguistic and paralinguistic data of @deadndeakt’s livestream for 90 minutes with netnography and thematic analyses. According to the study, abusive swearing (e.g., "kontol [dick]", "goblok [stupid]") represents 89.3 percent of the vulgar language and serves as playful insults, which enhance group cohesion. Emphatic swearing ("Anjing! Gua kalah! [Bitch! I lost!]") and cathartic swearing (“Ngentot, mic-nya rusak! [Fuck, the microphone is broken!]”) increase the emotional involvement. Intra-sentential blends, especially code-mixing (“Brightness-nya kita bikin tiga kali [We increase the brightness threefold]”), prevails in 85 percent. Other examples combine English gaming slang (template, unarchive) with Indonesian structure and local dialects, like a Javanese swear word (“Cok [Damn]”). Pronunciations, such as BTW [read in Indonesian: be te we] are even more localized global terms. It is analyzed that the vulgar language usage assists in persona creation and building of relationships with the audience, creating a tight-knit, exclusive community in which such language represents belonging and emotional release, despite its offensiveness in the larger society. Moreover, streamers combine Indonesian and English with gaming jargon to successfully appeal to their bilingual audience, so that they could be technically accurate and still fit into the global gaming cultures. These activities form a hybrid identity, where speakers possess a strong sense of Indonesian culture but are consistent with international trends, which strengthens group exclusivity. The results draw attention to live-streaming as a contact zone in which language negotiates belonging, which disrupts strict cultural boundaries. The study highlights the sociolinguistic innovativeness of online communities and recommends future research on offline effects of these online linguistic norms and the effects of the hybrid identities and communicative practices used in live-streaming communities on daily language, social interaction, and identity formation in the real world. The authors also suggest cross-cultural comparative research to find out whether the phenomena are specific to the Indonesian situation or have they become a global trend.

Abstract

Abstrak: Minimnya akses dan eksposur terhadap pelatihan wawancara berstandar internasional mengakibatkan rendahnya kesiapan siswa dan mahasiswa dalam bersaing di pasar global yang semakin kompetitif. Program ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan berbasis simulasi profesional kepada siswa SMA dan mahasiswa dalam upaya meningkatkan keterampilan wawancara melalui praktik wawancara beasiswa dan lamaran kerja secara langsung, menyesuaikan standar internasional, bersama dengan Konsulat Jenederal AS (Konjen AS), Surabaya, sebagai mitra. Program ini menggunakan pendekatan partisipatif yang melibatkan total 23 peserta, 10 siswa SMA, dan 13 mahasiswa secara aktif. Metode yang digunakan meliputi pelatihan interaktif, simulasi wawancara langsung, mentoring oleh profesional, serta monitoring dan evaluasi secara komprehensif untuk memastikan keberhasilan program dengan melakukan survei kepuasan peserta menggunakan instrumen skala Likert. Hasil dari praktik wawancara ini menunjukkan konsep “simulasi” menjadi pembekalan yang lebih efektif untuk membuat peserta merasakan pengalaman yang nyata. sebanyak 82% dari peserta setuju bahwa pertanyaan dan jawaban yang diberikan oleh pemateri sudah sesuai dengan topik, dan 95% peserta mengungkapkan pembicara menyampaikan studi kasus yang inspiratif.Abstract: The lack of access and exposure to international standard interview training results in low readiness among students and university students to compete in an increasingly competitive global market. This program aims to provide professional simulation-based training to high school and university students, aiming to improve their interview skills through direct scholarship and job application interviews, in line with international standards, in collaboration with the US Consulate General in Surabaya. The program adopts a participatory approach that actively involves 23 participants in total, 10 for high school students and 13 for university students. The methods used include interactive training, direct interview simulations, mentoring by professionals, as well as regular monitoring and evaluation comprehensively to ensure the program's success implementing participant satisfaction survey represented in Likert Scale Instrument. The results of the interview practice show that the “simulation” concept is a more effective preparation method, allowing participants to experience a different and realistic scenario. 82% of participants agreed that the questions and answers provided by the trainers were appropriate for the topic, and 95% of participants expressed that the speakers presented inspiring case studies.
