Abstract

The 2019 Indonesian Presidential Election is a democratic process for electing the President and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2019-2024 period. Before the election was held, Indonesia's mass media was incessantly publishing news about presidential candidates, namely Joko Widodo and Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo. As a retired army lieutenant general, Prabowo is known as a nationalist figure. This research aims to study Prabowo's image just before the 2019 Election in the online version of print media. We examine and compare the construction of Prabowo's image carried out by Tempo.co and Republika.co.id. We purposively select news published in Tempo and Republika online version from 4 to 5 November 2019. This research uses the qualitatively framing method by Entman to answer how the mass media carry out image construction. Results indicate that both media carry out a difference between construction. If Tempo tends to construct Prabowo's image as disrespectful, Republika tends to construct Prabowo's image as funny regarding Prabowo's "Boyolali Face" Remark. This study concludes that there are differences between the mainstream mass media and Islamic mass media in constructing Prabowo's image through their news. The different images constructed by the two media indicate that news construction or news framing is inevitable in the journalism field.

Abstract

Abstract - The present study examines the construction of global to the local content in Indonesian newspapers after New Order Era, Indonesia former President Suharto’s regime that was ended in 1998. In the so-called Reform Era, Indonesia entered a new phase of democratization which brings democracy towards newspapers and other media. Compared to the New Order Era, Indonesian newspapers currently have more variation in term of content, especially for entertainment. After employing a content analysis, Indonesian newspapers, which are Kompas and Jawa Pos, through their cross-cultural news in the entertainment section, are proved become more open to the other cultures. They have transformed from dominantly homogeneous -in 2004- to hybrid -in 2014- within glocalization, a perspective that can see micro-sociological phenomenon. This notion proves that glocalization does proceed, rather than keep constant, depending on the different cultural systems and structures, as well as the degree of local perception of glocalization. Keywords: Glocalization, globalization, pop culture, Indonesia Reform Era, crossculture

Abstract

There are several instances where inequality is shown against women. Education is one sector where the enrollment of women is far less than the enrollment of men. While there are many factors behind it, the current research will look at one of the least researched phenomena of sexual harassment as the cause behind the lack of registration. The issue of sexual harassment is the least studied in Muslim countries. The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of patriarchal social norms, long distance to school, the presence of female teachers, and sexual harassment as factors causing the enrollment of girls. This type of research is quantitative. The sample for this study was 200 respondents collected through a multistage sampling technique from eight rural locations. The methods used in collecting data are observation and questionnaires. The instrument used in collecting data is a questionnaire sheet. The technique used for data analysis is descriptive qualitative and quantitative analysis. The study results show that society plus culture, especially in rural areas, causes low literacy in girls. These social and cultural boundaries create obstacles for women in social action. As a result, most girls are confined to the confines of their homes. The majority of respondents said that traditional cultural values influenced girls' education. The community does not agree to send their daughters to school to work because of the unsafe environment.
