Abstract

This study aims to conduct a descriptive-qualitative analysis of the role of social media from a sociological perspective in shaping sports culture among the younger generation based on recent literature. The research design employed a systematic literature review. Data were collected from the Google Scholar, SINTA, and Garuda databases within the publication period of 2020–2026. Data analysis was conducted descriptively to synthesize findings regarding the function of social media as an agent of socialization, a space for identity construction, and a creator of sports cultural norms among the younger generation. The findings indicate that social media acts as a new social structure that significantly transforms the meaning, practices, and cultural values of sports among young people. The use of social media is not only intended to access sports-related information, but also to build social identity, gain recognition, and strengthen social status among peers. From a sociological perspective, social media has become a hybrid public space that combines physical and digital interactions, while simultaneously serving as an arena of contestation between the educational values of sports and commercial-social pressures related to body appearance. The results of this study confirm that social media functions as a new social structure that significantly shapes sports culture in terms of lifestyle, community formation, and social norms among the younger generation.

Abstract

This research is motivated by concerns about the rise of social pathology in modern sport, where commercial pressures and shifting humanitarian values have triggered various structural and cultural deviations. These problems undermine the integrity of competition and threaten the safety of athletes. The aim of this study is to comprehensively identify the main causes and social impacts of four aspects of sports pathology: hooliganism, doping abuse, systemic corruption or match-fixing, and oppression in the form of harassment and discrimination. Adopting a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach through a desk study method, data were collected from sports sociology literature, official anti-doping regulations, and relevant sociological theories, then analyzed using an interactive model. The results show that sports deviations manifest culturally through fan violence triggered by rigid group identities, and physically through doping practices resulting from a failure of moral reasoning. At the structural level, match-fixing manifests as a white-collar crime involving cross-sector collusion, while harassment and discrimination persist due to unequal patriarchal power relations. These various social distortions undermine the principles of fair play, the physical and mental health of athletes, and public trust. Therefore, an integrated mitigation strategy is needed that includes organizational structural reform, strict regulatory enforcement, and strengthening character education from an early age to restore a healthy and inclusive sports ecosystem.

Abstract

Advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the digital era have integrated social media into students' daily routines, including their fitness behavior. This study aims to examine the real influence of social media on the exercise motivation of active students at the State University of Medan (UNIMED) while evaluating the positive and negative impacts of these digital interactions. Using a quantitative approach with a correlational survey method, a structured Likert-scale questionnaire was distributed via Google Form to 30 students selected by purposive sampling. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression in SPSS 26. The results showed that the level of social media usage was relatively high (mean = 76.4) and students' exercise motivation was also strong (mean = 73.8). The regression model (Y = 21.340 + 0.687X) proved a positive and significant influence (thitung = 6.134, p < 0.05), where social media contributed to explaining the variance in motivation by 56.8%. Positive impacts include increased awareness of healthy living and insight into exercise techniques through platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Conversely, negative impacts include body image disturbances, motivation for social approval, and even device addiction. The conclusion of this study is that social media significantly influences exercise motivation, necessitating wise and balanced use.

Abstract

Youth participation in sports is an important aspect in supporting the physical, mental, and social development of young generations. From the perspective of sports sociology, sports participation is influenced not only by individual factors but also by social environments such as family, school, peers, and society. This study aims to examine the influence of the social environment on youth sports participation through a literature review method. The research method used in this study is a literature review by analyzing various national and international journals, books, and scientific articles relevant to the research topic. The results of the study indicate that the social environment has a significant influence on adolescents’ interest, motivation, and involvement in sports activities. Family support, active school environments, and positive peer influence can increase youth participation in sports. On the other hand, limited sports facilities, low social support, and excessive use of technology can reduce adolescents’ sports activities. Therefore, collaboration among families, schools, communities, and governments is needed to create a supportive social environment for youth sports participation in order to develop healthy, active, and socially responsible young generations.
