Abstract

The capacity to compose review texts is an essential talent in language acquisition, necessitating profound comprehension, critical evaluation, and the capability to articulate concepts methodically. This study seeks to assess the effect of employing technology in instructional methods for composing review texts among eighth-grade students. The study employed a quasi-experimental design utilizing pre-test and post-test methodologies, involving 30 students as participants. The data were evaluated utilizing paired t-test statistical analysis and categorized according to skill levels. The results demonstrated a notable enhancement in the average post-test scores relative to the pre-test scores. Sixty-three point thirty-three percent of pupils were classified in the medium category, exhibiting notable score improvements within this cohort. Technology has been demonstrated to assist students in understanding text structures, rectifying errors, and enhancing the overall quality of their writing. Nevertheless, certain pupils encountered difficulties in effectively leveraging technology. This study underscores the need of incorporating technology into writing teaching to improve students' literacy skills

Abstract

This study aims to identify the forms and analyze the functions of sarcasm in the TikTok comment section of the @Chintyamelsan account using a stylistic and pragmatic approach. The study employs a descriptive-interpretive qualitative method, with data consisting of comments containing sarcasm, collected through non-participant observation and documentation between January and December 2024. The data were analyzed using the interactive model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña through the stages of reduction, categorization, interpretation, and drawing conclusions. Theoretically, the analysis draws on Keraf’s stylistics theory, Grice’s conversational implicatures, and Searle’s speech acts. The research findings indicate that sarcasm manifests in the form of insults, mockery, indirect sarcasm, hyperbole, and derogatory comparisons, with a predominance of insults based on physical and social attributes. From a pragmatic perspective, sarcasm operates through violations of the maxims of quality and relevance, thereby generating an implicit meaning of negative evaluation. Furthermore, sarcasm is dominated by expressive speech acts and functions as an indirect directive to convey criticism. These findings indicate that sarcasm in digital communication serves not only as a stylistic device but also as a social strategy to belittle and discredit individuals. This study contributes to the development of linguistic research through the integration of stylistic and pragmatic approaches in the analysis of social media language.

Abstract

This research was motivated by students’ limited understanding of the intrinsic elements of drama, including theme, plot, character, setting, and moral value, as well as drama structure, namely prologue, dialogue, and epilogue. Students also experienced difficulty adapting short stories into drama scripts. This study aimed to describe the improvement of students’ ability to write drama scripts adapted from short stories through the discovery learning model. This research used Classroom Action Research based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in three stages: pre-action, cycle I, and cycle II. The subjects were 21 students of class XI A at SMA Negeri 1 Toari. Data were collected through observation, drama script writing tests, and documentation. The results showed improvement in each cycle. In cycle I, the average score reached 70.48, classical completeness was 33.3%, and student activity was 52.91%. In cycle II, the average score increased to 80.43, classical completeness reached 80.95%, and student activity increased to 83.86%. The cumulative increase in the average score reached 39.51%. These findings prove that discovery learning effectively improves students’ ability to write drama scripts adapted from short stories.
