Abstract

This study aims to identify the patterns and factors of Javanese cultural identity negotiation in the Arabic translation of the film Lima Wasto. The research data consists of subtitles from both the original Javanese version and the Arabic translation available on the VIU platform. A qualitative approach is employed using descriptive-comparative and interpretative methods. Data collection is conducted through observation and note-taking techniques. Data analysis follows the interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal four patterns of cultural negotiation: material culture, social culture, gestures and habits, and ecology. Cultural negotiation occurs due to differences in value systems, symbolism, and social structures between Javanese and Arab cultures. The main factors driving negotiation include the purpose of translation, symbolic differences, the norms of the target culture, and limitations of audiovisual media. Domestication strategies are often applied to make the meaning acceptable in the target culture. In conclusion, negotiation is an inevitable form of compromise in intercultural and interlingual translation.

Abstract

Differences in translations across periods often lead to variations in meaning, making terminological transformation inevitable. This study aims to analyze in depth the transformation of the term Ḥārth in two versions of the Qur'an translation, namely during the colonial period and the present day. The methodology is a qualitative approach combining descriptive, comparative, and interpretive methods. The research data are drawn from all verses containing the element Ḥārth in the Tafsir Qur'an Karim by Mahmud Yunus, as well as the official version from the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs. The results show that Ḥārth has a broad meaning, encompassing farming, land, and metaphorical uses. The identified transformation patterns include shifts from place to product, from product to place, from singular to plural, and from literal to metaphorical, influenced by socio-cultural context and reading styles over time. This study recommends that academics and translation institutions pay more attention to historical-linguistic aspects to maintain the relevance and accuracy of theological messages in changing times.

Abstract

Taboo expressions in language are often considered inappropriate because they may violate norms of politeness and certain cultural values. In the context of audiovisual translation, particularly film subtitling, taboo expressions are frequently not translated explicitly. This practice is known as the taboo censorship strategy. This study aims to examine the forms of taboo expressions, the application of taboo censorship strategies, and the factors underlying their use in the film Pengepungan di Bukit Duri. The study adopts a qualitative approach using descriptive, comparative, and interpretative methods. The data consist of taboo expressions found in the dialogue of the film Pengepungan di Bukit Duri along with their translations in Arabic subtitles. Data were collected through viewing and note-taking techniques and were analyzed using an interactive data analysis model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the subtitle translator of Pengepungan di Bukit Duri employed taboo censorship strategies in translating various types of taboo expressions, including those related to animals, mental disorders, and sexual organs and acts. The application of this strategy is influenced by differences in politeness norms between the source and target cultures, the need to soften expressions through euphemism, and the technical constraints of subtitling, which require messages to be conveyed concisely and clearly. Thus, the translator functions as a cultural mediator who seeks to balance fidelity to the source text with social and cultural acceptability for the target audience.

Abstract

This study examines how the curriculum design of nahwu textbooks in Islamic education shapes students’ religious character, a dimension that has received limited attention in previous textbook comparison research. It analyses and compares the curriculum design of Amtsilati and Mulakhkhash Qawāʾid al-Lughah al-ʿArabiyyah and explores how their design features relate to the development of students’ religiosity. Using a qualitative descriptive–comparative approach, the study conducts document analysis of content materials, particularly learning examples and tables of contents. Data analysis involves selecting relevant text units, coding them according to Tyler’s four curriculum components, comparing the resulting profiles, and interpreting their implications for the intellectual, ritualistic, and consequential dimensions of religiosity based on Glock and Stark’s framework. The findings show that Amtsilati adopts a practical, drill‑based, spiral design that emphasises pattern repetition and accurate reading of kitab kuning, whereas Mulakhkhash employs a conceptual, systematically classified design centred on iʿrāb and syntactic analysis. Both enhance Arabic comprehension but nurture religious character differently: Amtsilati strengthens discipline, consistency, and confidence in worship‑related recitation, while Mulakhkhash fosters careful reasoning and intellectual responsibility. Conceptually, the study proposes a model that links textbook curriculum design to specific dimensions of religious character and offers practical insights for integrating practice‑oriented and concept‑oriented elements in nahwu instruction.

Abstract

Translation specialization in Indonesian Master of Linguistics programs plays a key role in developing graduates’ theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research competence. However, variations in curriculum structure, content, and epistemological orientation across universities remain underexplored, necessitating a systematic mapping and comparison study. This study aims to map and compare the curricula of translation specializations in Master of Linguistics programs in Indonesia, including their epistemological orientations. A qualitative approach is used, employing descriptive and comparative methods. The data consist of translation specialization curricula from seven universities, collected from official academic documents such as courses offered, syllabi, and program regulations. Data collection is conducted through a documentation study using purposive sampling. Data analysis involves curriculum mapping, curriculum comparison, and determining epistemological orientation. This study shows that curriculum mapping and comparative analysis of translation specializations within the Master of Linguistics Program in Indonesia reveal common core structures in translation theory, practice, and research methodology. Despite these shared foundations, programs display institutional variations in focus, learning opportunities, and curricular structure. The analysis highlights a dominant hybrid epistemological orientation, combining linguistic theory, Translation Studies, and professional practice. This integrated approach allows students to develop theoretical understanding, practical translation skills, and research competence simultaneously. It is reflecting each program’s academic identity while balancing scholarly rigor with applied and industry-relevant training. The study’s findings inform curriculum development, helping universities balance theory, practice, and research to enhance translation education and align it with academic and professional standards.
