Abstract

The present research aims to identify the translation techniques, methods, and ideologies used in translating Javanese-English for the lyrics of the song Kartonyono Medot Janji, performed by Denny Caknan. The song was re-sung in English by Hernanda Yona under the title Kartonyono Ruins Faith. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative with a translation-as-product approach. Data was collected by listening to both versions of the song in Javanese and English and then transcribed into written form. Data analysis includes data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that in translating the lyrics of Kartonyono Medot Janji, the translator applied nine translation techniques: variation, established equivalence, modulation, borrowing, discursive creation, transposition, amplification, adaptation, and compensation. Based on the translation techniques used, it is evident that the translator’s method and ideology for translating the song lyrics are oriented towards the target language with a domestication ideology. The present research enhances the understanding of how translation techniques, methods, and ideology are applied to adapt song lyrics. It provides insights into how these approaches impact the translation process from Javanese to English. The present research offers a comparative linguistic analysis between Javanese and English, particularly regarding how meaning and language structure interact in translation.

Abstract

Social criticism in society is often presented through song lyrics. This study aims to analyze the representation of social criticism in the song Bingung by Iksan Skuter using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques in the form of observation and note-taking. The primary data consist of the full transcript of the song's lyrics, while the secondary data include the relevant social, cultural, and political contexts surrounding the lyrics. The observation technique is used to comprehend the entirety of the lyrics, while the note-taking technique is employed to record and analyze the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings that arise. The data analysis technique follows the interactive analysis model, which includes three main stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that the lyrics of Bingung critically reveal various social issues, such as the stigmatization of political ideologies, religious and cultural stereotypes, and the restriction of freedom of speech through narrow labels. Additionally, criticism of professions, materialism, and education highlights social injustice, while criticism of the unjust legal system reflects society's distrust of law enforcement. This study reveals that the lyrics of Bingung serve as a reflection and a medium of social criticism, encouraging the public to be more critical in understanding everyday realities. The implication of this research is that song lyrics, as a form of artistic expression, can serve effectively as a medium for social critique.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of first-person pronouns in NIKI's song lyrics, focusing on their frequency, pattern, and context of usage. The research employs a descriptive qualitative-quantitative approach, combining corpus analysis with contextual interpretation. The data consists of song lyrics from NIKI's albums and popular tracks, formatted into a compatible text file (.txt) for analysis using AntConc software version 4.3.1. Data collection involved gathering lyrics from reliable sources, cleaning the data, and preparing it for analysis. The analysis process included identifying the frequency of first-person pronouns, observing distribution patterns through the concordance feature, and interpreting the context and meanings of pronoun usage. The findings reveal a dominance of the pronoun "I" (589 occurrences) over "We" (138 occurrences), indicating a focus on individual experiences and emotions in NIKI's lyrics. The study identifies various patterns, including "I + to be," which reflects deep emotional states, self-reflection, and regret; "I + modal," which conveys feelings and desires; and "I + verb," which directly expresses actions and emotions. Additionally, the "We" patterns, such as "We + To Be" and "We + Modal," illustrate collective experiences, possibilities, and relationship dynamics. The results highlight the contrasting roles of individual and collective perspectives in NIKI’s songwriting, enriching the emotional depth of her lyrics.

Abstract

This study examines Prabowo Subianto's presidential inauguration speech using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to explore how language shapes and is influenced by power and ideology in the context of Indonesian politics. A qualitative approach with a descriptive method is employed to provide a deep, comprehensive analysis of the speech text, without altering its original meaning. The data for this study is the text of Prabowo Subianto’s inauguration speech, sourced from official transcripts or recordings. Data collection involves observation and documentation, while data analysis utilizes the three CDA dimensions, i.e. textual analysis, discourse practice, and social practice. The findings reveal that the speech is structured to emphasize gratitude, a national vision, and a call for unity, using inclusive language and repetition to foster a sense of national responsibility. The discourse analysis shows that Prabowo’s speech aims to build a positive, inclusive image and reach a broad audience through media distribution. Socially, the speech positions Indonesia as a strong, independent nation, with Prabowo portraying himself as a leader committed to democratic values and national unity. The study concludes that the speech effectively constructs a political identity based on inclusivity, responsibility, and unity.
