Abstract

Climate change, driven by global warming, has triggered the occurrence of El Niño and La Niña phenomena and prolonged rainy and dry seasons. These changes have significantly impacted farmers, fishers, and human activities across various sectors. According to research findings, annual air temperature has shown variability, ranging from moderate to very good categories. However, in 2021, a notable decline was recorded, with temperatures categorized as very poor. In contrast, annual humidity levels generally remained within the moderate to very good range, except in 2020 when humidity was categorized as very poor, despite temperature conditions that year being moderate for 8 months and very good for 4 months. Wind speed from 2019 to 2023 consistently showed a very good trend. Based on the comparison between the average number of dry and wet months, the climate typeaccording to the Schmidt-Ferguson classification—shifted from type C to B, then B to B, B to A, and finally A to C, resulting in a climate sequence of C–B–B–A–C over the observed period. Interestingly, these climate changes have not had a significant impact on the income levels of paddy farmers in Baruga Village. This resilience is largely due to the village's geographical features, which include surrounding mountains and hills as well as the flow of the Konawe River, all of which contribute to a stable water supply and support sustainable agricultural productivity.

Abstract

Local wisdom plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance while supporting sustainable agricultural practices. This study aims to identify the practices of the Panggoba tradition among farming communities in Leboto Village, North Gorontalo. The research employed a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the Panggoba tradition, which includes determining planting schedules based on indigenous astronomy and performing the Rotan Tikus ritual for pest control is still preserved by some farmers. This tradition contributes to regulating planting seasons, reducing pest control costs, and maintaining ecological balance. However, modernization and climate change have reduced the intensity of its practice. The study highlights that the Panggoba local wisdom carries ecological, social, and economic values that remain highly relevant for sustainable agricultural development.

Abstract

The Meta'ua tradition plays an important role in maintaining cultural identity, preserving local wisdom, and shaping the cultural landscape of the community amidst the current of modernization. The purpose of this study is to analyze the symbolic meaning and value of local wisdom in the Meta'ua tradition in the community of Nggulanggula Village, South Buton Regency, from a Cultural Geography perspective. This study uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques through observation and in-depth interviews. The results show that the Meta'ua tradition forms a distinctive cultural landscape through traditional processions, dances, symbols, and the use of spaces such as Baruga Binawakili and Galampa as centers of cultural activities. Community interaction with the environment is seen in the use of garden produce, livestock, and cempaka flowers as supporting elements of the tradition, as well as through social participation that emphasizes the value of mutual cooperation. Traditional symbols such as machetes, spears, shields, red and white sashes, and traditional clothing reflect identity and serve as a unifying force for the community. Although modernization brings some simple adjustments, the essential values of tradition remain intact. Thus, the Meta'ua tradition not only functions as a traditional procession, but also as a cultural symbol, a means of preserving local wisdom, and strengthening the identity of the Siompu District community within the Cultural Geography.
