Abstract

The contemporary Islamic education system is facing significant challenges due to the rapid pace of globalization, technological advancements, and ideological changes. These challenges call for an adaptive educational model that balances traditional Islamic values with modern educational needs. Fazlur Rahman (1919–1988), a prominent Muslim philosopher, provided essential insights into this issue. Rahman critiqued the intellectual stagnation within the Muslim world and the division between religious and secular knowledge. His educational philosophy promotes a holistic integration of science, ethics, and methodology, advocating for a system that nurtures not just intellectual capabilities, but also moral and spiritual development. This study aims to analyze Rahman’s thoughts on Islamic education and explore their relevance in addressing the current issues within contemporary Islamic education. Using a qualitative approach and library research, this paper examines Rahman’s works, particularly his hermeneutical method of double movement, and their implications for modern Islamic curricula. The study finds that Rahman’s approach can provide a progressive framework for Islamic education, emphasizing critical thinking, moral integrity, and the integration of religious and general knowledge. Rahman’s educational philosophy is crucial in reshaping Islamic education to meet contemporary demands without losing its Islamic identity.

Abstract

Moral education plays an important role in shaping the character and morals of students, especially at the elementary level, where these values begin to be intensively instilled. However, current challenges demand an approach that is able to integrate Islamic values comprehensively. This article aims to examine how the integration of Islamic epistemological reasoning, namely bayani, irfani, and burhani, can be the basis for developing a more comprehensive and applicable moral education method. The method used is a literature study with a systematic qualitative approach through literature review and content analysis. The results of the study show that the combination of these three approaches is able to form a moral education model that is not only based on religious texts, but also combines spiritual and rational aspects so as to help form humans who are noble, critical, and have high spiritual awareness. Therefore, it is recommended that moral education at the elementary level adopt this integrative model so that it is able to adapt to the development of the times while maintaining Islamic values as a whole.

Abstract

The crisis of objectivity in modern science reveals a profound epistemological problem in which scientific rationality becomes detached from ethical and human dimensions. Science, which was originally intended to liberate humanity, has often turned into a technocratic instrument that alienates it. This article aims to reconstruct the meaning of science through the perspective of C.A. van Peursen’s functional epistemology as a philosophical response to the modern crisis of objectivity. The study employs a qualitative approach using a philosophical-hermeneutic analysis to interpret Van Peursen’s ideas within the broader context of culture and contemporary knowledge dynamics. Data were collected from Van Peursen’s primary works and relevant secondary sources, then analyzed through three stages: descriptive-conceptual mapping, critical analysis, and philosophical reconstruction. The findings indicate that Van Peursen’s functional epistemology positions science as a dynamic and value-laden cultural strategy rather than a value-free system. Science is not merely a tool for empirical verification but also a means of restoring human meaning and moral purpose. The study contributes to developing a more humanistic, dialogical, and context-sensitive philosophy of science that integrates scientific rationality, local wisdom, and ethical responsibility within the Indonesian intellectual landscape.

Abstract

Islamic universities face increasingly complex challenges due to the development of digital technology and social changes that affect students' mindsets and behaviors. On the one hand, this progress has expanded access to science, but on the other hand, it has also had an impact on weakening religious awareness, academic ethics, and moral responsibility in campus life. This study aims to analyze the construction of religious character values in NW learning at the Hamzanwadi Nahdlatul Wathan Diniyah Islamiyah (NWDI) Pancor Islamic Institute which focuses on value construction, internalized pedagogical process, and the formation of students' religious habitus. This study uses a field qualitative approach with purposive sampling techniques. Data was obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The results of the study show that the value of religious character is constructed through the material of verses of the will of the devotional of the time, Shalawat Nahdlatain, the example of lecturers, and the academic culture of the campus which gives birth to the values of faith, piety, sincerity, honesty, discipline, help, religious moderation, tolerance, and love for the homeland. The internalization process takes place through teacher-centered learning, deep learning, example, habituation, lectures, contemplation, and discussion so as to form moral knowledge, value appreciation, and real actions. These academic traditions form religious habitus in the form of academic integration, social responsibility, presence towards lecturers, and moderate religiosity. This research emphasizes that NW learning is not just an institutional course, but a system of religious character formation of students who live in culture or tradition at the Hamzanwadi Islamic Institute NWDI Pancor.
