Abstract

This study explores in depth the practice of tattooing as a bodily expression imbued with personal and spiritual meaning in contemporary human life, particularly when examined in relation to the Catholic understanding of the dignity of the human body. The body is not viewed merely as a space for individual self-expression, but as an integral dimension of the human person, created in the image and likeness of God. Employing a qualitative method through a theological and pastoral reflective approach, this study relies on a literature review of official Church documents, theological works, and relevant scholarly journal articles. The findings indicate that tattoo practices cannot be assessed in a uniform or purely normative manner, as their meaning is closely shaped by personal motivation, socio-cultural context, and their relationship to moral responsibility and faith life. From a pastoral perspective, the presence of tattoos within the life of the Church presents both challenges and opportunities for fostering more personal and contextual faith-based dialogue. This study underscores the need for a wise and compassionate pastoral attitude, enabling the Church to accompany the faithful so that tattoo practices may be understood as part of the human journey in seeking meaning and living out the Catholic faith maturely amid ongoing changes in body culture.

Abstract

The development of artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping the ways human beings learn, think, and make decisions, particularly in the areas of education and moral formation. This situation raises fundamental ethical questions, especially concerning human freedom and responsibility as moral subjects. This article reflects on the use of artificial intelligence from the perspective of Catholic moral theology, taking human dignity as its primary point of departure. This study employs a qualitative approach through a method of theological reflection, drawing on Sacred Scripture, the Catholic moral tradition, official Church documents, and relevant contemporary theological literature. The findings indicate that artificial intelligence can serve as a valuable aid to human life, yet it also carries the risk of weakening human freedom and obscuring moral responsibility when used without adequate ethical reflection. Excessive reliance on AI, particularly in educational contexts, may diminish critical thinking, intellectual virtues, and the process of moral character formation. In the light of Catholic faith, artificial intelligence should be understood as an instrument at the service of the human person, rather than as a substitute for human moral agency in thinking, choosing, and acting responsibly. This reflection seeks to enrich Catholic moral theology by offering a more contextual and humane response to the ethical challenges posed by contemporary technological developments.

Abstract

The criminalization of teachers in the context of student discipline reveals a profound crisis of authority within contemporary education. This article aims to examine the tension between pedagogical discipline and legal mechanisms through a theological-pastoral perspective. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in critical pastoral theology, the study integrates empirical data from international institutional reports and educational policy analyses with normative theological reflection rooted in Scripture and Church teachings. The discussion demonstrates that the weakening legitimacy of teacher authority, the growing climate of fear due to legal prosecution, and the disintegration of shared responsibility between schools and parents contribute significantly to the erosion of character education and the rise of aggressive student behavior. From a Christian theological perspective, discipline is understood as a pedagogical act grounded in moral responsibility and service rather than as an expression of violence. This article argues that the crisis of authority in education is both structural and pastoral, requiring active engagement from the Church to restore healthy relationships among educators, parents, and students. Contextual theological-pastoral reflection is proposed as a meaningful contribution to the renewal of educational practice and the strengthening of character formation amid contemporary social and legal challenges.

Abstract

The study offers a theological examination of the relationship between Christian faith, political life, and the vocation to build world peace, grounded in Gaudium et Spes articles 73–78. Within the contemporary global context marked by armed conflicts, democratic crises, ideological polarization, and structural injustice, the study reaffirms the enduring relevance of the Second Vatican Council’s social theology for the presence of Christian faith in the public sphere. Employing a qualitative research design, the study is based on a literature review with a textual–contextual analysis of conciliar documents, combined with critical engagement with works in social theology and Christian political ethics. The findings indicate that, from the perspective of faith, politics is understood as a form of service to the common good (bonum commune) and as a concrete arena for the enactment of the ethical responsibility of believers. The relationship between Church and state is articulated through the principle of a healthy and dialogical autonomy, which enables the Church to exercise its moral and prophetic role without succumbing to the logic of power or domination. Furthermore, Gaudium et Spes affirms that authentic peace is not merely the absence of conflict but the fruit of justice rooted in God’s reconciling work in Christ. Accordingly, Christian faith is presented as a transformative force with an essential public dimension, one that fosters the ethical engagement of believers in the pursuit of justice and peace in the world.

Abstract

TThis study aims to analyze the relationship between ecological understanding and ecological behavior among students at Catholic higher education institutions in Indonesia, as well as to gain a deeper understanding of the factors influencing their ecological behavior. The study employed a mixed methods approach using a sequential explanatory design, in which quantitative data were collected and analyzed first, followed by qualitative data collection and analysis to strengthen and explain the quantitative findings. The quantitative phase involved 109 respondents selected through purposive sampling, while the qualitative phase involved 12 participants selected based on the diversity of their responses and their willingness to provide more in-depth information. Data were collected using a 20-item closed-ended Likert-scale questionnaire and an open-ended questionnaire. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression, whereas qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings indicate that students’ ecological understanding and ecological behavior were both at a high level. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between ecological understanding and ecological behavior (r = 0.615; p < 0.001). Regression analysis showed that ecological understanding accounted for 37.9% of the variance in ecological behavior, while the remaining 62.1% was explained by other factors. The qualitative findings revealed that students’ ecological behavior was influenced by personal habits, social environment, the availability of campus facilities, and an environmentally supportive campus culture. These findings suggest that improving ecological understanding should be accompanied by institutional policies and the development of an ecological culture to encourage the consistent implementation of ecological behavior in everyday life.

Abstract

The doctrine of creatio ex nihilo is a fundamental teaching in Christian theology which affirms that God created all things out of nothing. This doctrine not only explains the metaphysical origin of the world but also carries important theological implications for understanding the relationship between God, humanity, and nature. This study aims to reexamine the doctrine of creatio ex nihilo within the framework of the theology of creation by emphasizing the relationship between God, human beings, and the natural world, as well as its implications for human responsibility toward creation. The research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. The data sources include the Holy Scriptures, official Church documents, and works of classical and contemporary theologians that discuss the theology of creation. The analysis is conducted through a systematic theological approach using a critical and reflective theological analysis. The findings show that the doctrine of creatio ex nihilo affirms the ontological dependence of all creation on God as the source of being. This understanding highlights that the world possesses intrinsic value because it originates from God and therefore should not be treated merely as an object of exploitation. Within the framework of the theology of creation, human beings, as imago Dei, hold a unique position and bear moral responsibility to care for and preserve the integrity of creation. Therefore, the theological reflection on creatio ex nihilo provides an important foundation for the development of ecological ethics in Christian faith and enriches the understanding of the relationship between God, humanity, and the whole of creation in the context of the modern world.

Abstract

The Free Nutritious Meal Program (Program Makan Bergizi Gratis/MBG) initiated by the Indonesian government aims to improve the nutritional quality of society, particularly among school children. However, the implementation of this program has generated various social controversies, including issues related to food quality, cases of food poisoning, and disparities in welfare between program staff and honorary teachers. This situation reflects the emergence of social tensions within society that can be interpreted as “signs of the times” from the perspective of pastoral theology. This study aims to analyze the controversies surrounding the MBG Program through a pastoral theological approach using the pastoral circle method, which consists of the stages of see, judge, and act. The study employs a qualitative approach through literature review of Church documents, Catholic social teachings, and relevant scholarly studies. The findings indicate that the controversies surrounding the MBG Program are not merely related to technical aspects of public policy, but also involve dimensions of social justice, human dignity, solidarity, and moral responsibility in the management of social welfare. In light of Catholic social teaching, particularly Fratelli Tutti and Evangelii Gaudium, this phenomenon becomes a pastoral call for the Church to be prophetically present in promoting social justice and the common good. Therefore, the social tensions that arise may become a space for theological reflection as well as an opportunity to strengthen social solidarity within society.
