Abstract

Online gambling is increasingly prevalent in the digital era and impacts psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. Gambling disorder is categorized as an impulse control disorder associated with impulsivity, anxiety, depression, and cognitive biases. From an Islamic perspective, maysir is strictly prohibited because it damages reason, property, and social order, and contradicts the maqasid al-shariah. This study used descriptive qualitative methods through library research and content analysis of psychological literature and Islamic texts. The results indicate that gambling causes financial loss, family conflict, social isolation, and a decline in mental-spiritual health. Islam views the prohibition of gambling as a protective mechanism for the soul, mind, and morals. The study recommends an Islamic psychospiritual rehabilitation model that integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with the practices of tazkiyah al-nafs, dhikr, and strengthening faith, as well as the importance of public policy and Islamic counseling programs in educational institutions, Islamic boarding schools, and clinical services.

Abstract

Transformational leadership in education is considered an effective strategy to enhance school quality, build a positive organizational culture, and foster student character. Mts Pakis in Gununglurah Village, Cilongok, Banyumas, stands out as an alternative agroforestry-based school for children from underprivileged families and serves as a unique example of transformational leadership in practice. This study aims to analyze the transformational leadership practices of the madrasah principal in strengthening organizational culture and improving educational quality. The research employs a qualitative approach with a literature study method. Data were collected through a review of primary literature discussing Mts Pakis and transformational leadership concepts, as well as interviews with Kang Is, the principal of Mts Pakis. Data analysis was conducted using Avolio and Bass's transformational leadership framework. The results indicate that the principal implements two main dimensions of transformational leadership: inspirational motivation through a vision integrated with local values and the Pakis principles (Piety, Achievement, Knowledge, Integrity, Sincerity), and individualized consideration by giving attention to both students and volunteers despite limited resources. Therefore, this study confirms that transformational leadership is not only effective in formal schools with adequate support but can also succeed in community-based alternative madrasahs. These findings are expected to enrich educational leadership studies with perspectives of local wisdom and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

This study examines the Kaum system as an indigenous model of community empowerment within Minangkabau society, focusing on Nagari Tabek Patah, West Sumatra. Addressing the limitations of dominant Western-centric empowerment frameworks, this research employs a grounded theory approach to explore how locally rooted social structures and cultural values foster sustainable empowerment mechanisms. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with key customary leaders (Ninik Mamak), and document analysis. The findings reveal a cyclical four-stage empowerment model embedded within Minangkabau local wisdom: tahu di nan ampek (awareness), sauak aie mandikan diri (internalization), karajo ba pokok (actualization), and ingek jo jago (social control). These stages demonstrate how empowerment organically emerges through the integration of reason, religion, nature, and custom; is internalized within communal social spaces; is actualized through participatory practices such as deliberation and mutual cooperation; and is sustained by community-based social control mechanisms grounded in customary law. The study demonstrates that empowerment within the Kaum system is not merely economic or externally driven but is deeply rooted in cultural identity, social capital, and collective agency. By situating local Minangkabau perspectives in dialogue with global theories such as Freire’s critical consciousness, Bourdieu’s habitus, and Sen’s capability approach, this research contributes to the broader discourse on community empowerment. It underscores the importance of culturally grounded, participatory, and sustainable development models, offering an alternative framework for understanding empowerment in non-Western and indigenous contexts.
