Abstract

This research seeks to find out the following: 1) whether the Grammar Translation Method improves the writing abilities of students. 2) Ascertain the level of student interest in incorporating the Grammar Translation Method into their educational journey. All participants in this study were students enrolled in classes VIII.1 and VIII.3 at SMP Negeri 1 Pallangga. Investigative methods and a quantitative approach were employed by the researchers. The methods of data collection consist of written examinations and surveys. The research incorporated a population of 396 students and utilized samples from two classes: class VIII.1, which served as the experimental class, and class VIII.3, which functioned as the control class; the combined number of students from these two classes was 72. Applying the Grammar Translation Method to writing skills can result in a substantial enhancement of the teaching and learning process, according to the findings of this study. The mean score for the Experiment class on the pre-test was 56.83, whereas the Control class scored 55.28. The post-test averages were 72.86 for the Control class and 76.58 for the Experimental class. Based on the research findings, it can be inferred that the implementation of the Grammar Translation Method enhances students' writing proficiency and fosters their engagement in the learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze simple sentence patterns and the structure of phrases in reading texts in the Talk Active textbook for 10th grade students at SMAN 13 Maros. This study focuses on identifying syntactic sentence patterns and syntactic structures of phrases in the sentences. A total of 140 simple sentences from 14 chapters were analyzed using the classification of simple sentence patterns according to Quirk et al., (1985), phrase structure rules theory according to Bornstein (1984), and syntactic tree diagram representation according to Aarts (2001). The results showed that the most dominant sentence patterns were SVC and SVO, followed by SVOA and SVA, while complex patterns such as SVOO and SVOC rarely appeared, and the simplest pattern SV did not appear at all. Noun phrases (NPs) were dominated by Pronoun and Determiner + Noun, while verb phrases were dominated by linking verbs (Vl) with complements and transitive verbs (Vt) with objects and additional adverbials, supporting the dominance of SVC, SVO, and SVOA patterns. These findings indicate that the textbook tend to feature more descriptive sentences where sentence patterns are used to explain or identify subjects and express actions or events.

Abstract

Kemajuan teknologi di era digital telah membawa perubahan signifikan dalam dunia pendidikan. Guru kini dituntut untuk kreatif dalam mengintegrasikan teknologi dalam pembelajaran. Oleh karena itu, metode yang inovatif diperlukan untuk membantu siswa menguasai kosakata dengan cara yang menyenangkan dan interaktif. Quizizz adalah salah satu aplikasi pembelajaran digital yang banyak digunakan di berbagai jenjang pendidikan. Aplikasi ini memungkinkan guru untuk membuat kuis interaktif dengan elemen permainan, sehingga siswa merasa termotivasi untuk belajar. Aplikasi Quizizz menawarkan pendekatan interaktif berbasis teknologi, yang dirancang untuk meningkatkan minat belajar siswa melalui fitur-fitur seperti gamifikasi dan analisis hasil pembelajaran. Pengabdian ini berfokus pada bagaimana pemanfaatan Quizizz dapat meningkatkan pemahaman siswa terhadap pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di SMAN 14 Maros. Dalam kegiatan ini, mahasiswa menerapkan Quizizz untuk mengajar siswa kelas XI dan XII pada materi News Item Text dan Analytical Exposition Text. Tes dilaksanakan menggunakan soal pilihan ganda dan pengisian kolom dengan waktu yang bervariasi.
