Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve environmental literacy in early childhood through the practice of making organic fertilizer from eggshells at Syahida Islamic Kindergarten in Jember. Jember Regency has a high poultry egg production, resulting in large quantities of eggshell waste that has the potential to pollute the environment if not utilized. This waste contains calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) which is beneficial for plants, so it has the potential to be processed into organic fertilizer. Activities are carried out through an organic approach experiential learning. This activity directly involved children in the washing, drying, pounding, and application of eggshell powder to plants. The results demonstrated an increased understanding of organic waste sorting, recycling concepts, and the use of eggshells as fertilizer. Teachers also gained new insights into creative and easily implemented environmental-based learning methods. Overall, this activity was effective in fostering environmental awareness from an early age while supporting locally-based organic waste management.

Abstract

Abstract

Milk is a highly nutritious food that plays an important role in meeting the nutritional needs of the community, making consumer acceptance a key factor in the success of dairy products in the market. Various brands of factory-produced liquid milk have long been available in the Indonesian market and possess different product characteristics and market positions. Therefore, a comparison of consumer acceptance based on sensory attributes is necessary to better understand consumer preferences for each brand. This study aims to analyze consumer acceptance of three brands of factory-produced liquid milk marketed in Jember Regency's modern markets based on sensory attributes. The research used a hedonic test method involving 78 untrained panelists from the general public. The samples tested consisted of three milk brands (Greenfields, Ultra Milk, and Diamond) with three flavor variants: full cream, strawberry, and chocolate. The sensory attributes observed included color, aroma, taste, and viscosity, using a five-point hedonic scale. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at a significance level of 5% and followed by Duncan's test if significant differences were found. The research findings indicate that brand variations significantly impact the aroma, taste, and viscosity characteristics in the majority of variants, whereas the effect on color is contingent upon the specific flavor variant. The Diamond sample demonstrated the highest acceptance level in the full-cream milk variant, likely due to its higher total fat content. In the strawberry milk variant, all sensory attributes were significantly influenced by brand differences, with the Greenfields sample having the highest preference level, supported by its more attractive color and balanced flavor due to its higher sugar and fat content. In the chocolate milk variant, brand differences significantly affected the color, aroma, and taste attributes, while viscosity showed no difference. Overall, sensory attributes, particularly taste and aroma, are important factors that influence consumer acceptance of dairy products.

Abstract

El Niño –Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is one of the climate variability factors that can affect rainfall patterns and agricultural production systems . This study aimed to analyze the relationship between ENSO variability , rainfall , harvested area, and rice production in East Java during 2018–2025. The research used a quantitative descriptive method with secondary data obtained from the Meteorology , Climatology , and Geophysical Agency and the Central Bureau of Statistics . Data analysis was performed using Pearson correlation analysis to determine the relationship among variables . The results showed that ENSO had a very strong negative correlation with rainfall (r = -0.959; p < 0.01), indicating that stronger El Niño conditions were associated with lower rainfall . However , ENSO and rainfall did not show a significant direct relationship with rice production . Rice production showed a very strong positive correlation with harvested area (r = 0.979; p < 0.01), indicating that harvested area was the main factor associated with production changes during the observation period . These findings indicate that although ENSO strongly influences rainfall variability , its impact on rice production can be reduced by agricultural management factors such as irrigation systems , cultivation practices , adaptive varieties , and farmer adaptation strategies .

Abstract

Intercropping is a cultivation strategy that can enhance land use efficiency and crop productivity compared to monoculture. This study aimed to evaluate the advantages of sweet corn–soybean intercropping systems over monoculture through crop competition analysis. The experiment was conducted at the Innovation Farm of Politeknik Negeri Jember using two treatments, namely monoculture and intercropping, each with three replications. Observed parameters included sweet corn yield components (number of cobs, cob weight, diameter, and length) as well as the calculation of Land Equivalent Ratio (LER), Area Time Equivalent Ratio (ATER), aggressivity, Competitive Ratio (CR), and Actual Yield Loss (AYL). Sweet corn yield data were analyzed using a t-test to determine significant differences between treatments. The results showed that intercropping provided higher efficiency with LER of 1.32 and ATER of 1.25, indicating an increase in land efficiency by 32.3% and time efficiency by 24.6% compared to monoculture. Sweet corn was the dominant crop with aggressivity of 1.42, CR of 3.31, and positive AYL of 1.03, while soybean was suppressed with aggressivity of –1.42, CR of 0.30, and negative AYL of –0.39. The t-test indicated no significant differences in sweet corn yield between monoculture and intercropping (p > 0.05). Thus, the sweet corn–soybean intercropping system is proven to be more efficient and has the potential to be adopted as a sustainable cultivation strategy under limited land conditions.
