Abstract

Sweet corn (Zea mays L. Var saccharata Sturt) has a high demand in Indonesia, but its productivity is threatened by drought; therefore, it is necessary to analyze its growth under drought stress conditions. This study aims to observe the morphological and physiological responses of sweet corn plants to drought stress and potassium administration. The research was conducted over a three-month period at the experimental garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Riau. A Factorial Completely Randomized Design (RA LF) was used with two factors: drought stress and potassium fertilization. The study consisted of three levels of potassium fertilization, with three replications, resulting in a total of 18 experimental units. The first factor: A1 = everyday; A2 = drought stress. The second factor: K 1 = 2.3 g K 2 O plant -1; K 2 = 2.8 g K 2 O plant -1; K 3 = 180 kg K 2 O ha -1. Analysis of Variance was continued with the Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test at 5% level. The observed parameters consisted of physiological and morphological factors in sweet corn plants. The study found that drought stress negatively impacted the physiological parameters of sweet corn, including reduced plant water content and increased proline levels. Additionally, drought stress decreased key morphological traits, including plant height, root condition, cob husk weight, cob husk length, and cob husk diameter. However, the application of potassium fertilizer, particularly at a dose of 3.4 g K₂O plant-1, significantly improved the length of the cob husk. Overall, increasing potassium application under drought stress conditions tended to enhance both morphological and physiological parameters of sweet corn.

Abstract

Intercropping is a cultivation strategy that can enhance land use efficiency and crop productivity compared to monoculture. This study aimed to evaluate the advantages of sweet corn–soybean intercropping systems over monoculture through crop competition analysis. The experiment was conducted at the Innovation Farm of Politeknik Negeri Jember using two treatments, namely monoculture and intercropping, each with three replications. Observed parameters included sweet corn yield components (number of cobs, cob weight, diameter, and length) as well as the calculation of Land Equivalent Ratio (LER), Area Time Equivalent Ratio (ATER), aggressivity, Competitive Ratio (CR), and Actual Yield Loss (AYL). Sweet corn yield data were analyzed using a t-test to determine significant differences between treatments. The results showed that intercropping provided higher efficiency with LER of 1.32 and ATER of 1.25, indicating an increase in land efficiency by 32.3% and time efficiency by 24.6% compared to monoculture. Sweet corn was the dominant crop with aggressivity of 1.42, CR of 3.31, and positive AYL of 1.03, while soybean was suppressed with aggressivity of –1.42, CR of 0.30, and negative AYL of –0.39. The t-test indicated no significant differences in sweet corn yield between monoculture and intercropping (p > 0.05). Thus, the sweet corn–soybean intercropping system is proven to be more efficient and has the potential to be adopted as a sustainable cultivation strategy under limited land conditions.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the agroindustry sector play a vital role in economic growth in developing countries. Although capable of producing high-quality, preservative-free food commodities, many traditional agroindustries face stagnation in business scaling up due to limited human resource capabilities, particularly in the field of digital marketing. This study aims to formulate the most optimal marketing strategy priorities for a local banana chip agroindustry in East Java, Indonesia. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, this study integrates the Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE) matrix, the External Factor Evaluation (EFE) matrix, the Internal-External (IE) matrix, SWOT analysis, and the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM). Data collection involved assessments by experts and practitioners, with instrument weighting using the Paired Comparison technique to ensure evaluation precision. The research results validate solid internal strengths with an IFE score of 2.96 and the ability to respond to external conditions with an EFE score of 2.69, positioning the agroindustry in Quadrant V (Hold and Maintain / Grow and Build) on the IE Matrix. The most crucial finding from the QSPM analysis demonstrates that the highest-priority strategy, with a Total Attractiveness Score (TAS) of 7.42, is not the modification of physical products but rather the addition of specialized personnel in the field of marketing. This finding contributes to the literature on SME strategic management by confirming that a shift from conventional operational management toward functional specialization (digital marketing) is an absolute prerequisite for expanding market reach and maintaining a competitive advantage.

Abstract

The management of household organic waste is a growing challenge in residential areas due to increasing waste volumes and limited source-level treatment systems. This community service program aimed to build the capacity of residents in ATR-2 Housing, Jember, to process organic waste through assisted compost production using an aerobic drum composter. Activities included socialization, hands-on practice in filling and operating the drum composter, and monitoring and evaluation of the composting process. A 60-liter drum composter was operated using a layering technique of organic materials, addition of dry materials, and application of the EM4 activator. Results showed that liquid organic fertilizer could be harvested approximately one week after initial filling, while solid compost reached maturity within 30–40 days, characterized by a darker color, crumbly texture, and absence of foul odor. The program contributed to a reduction in organic waste volume, improved residents’ awareness and skills, and supported the use of compost on communal public facility planting areas. The mentoring-based approach proved effective and has potential for replication in other neighborhood or residential community settings.

Abstract

The development of agribusiness based on village level flagship commodities cannot be carried out in a partial or fragmented manner. It requires an integrated agribusiness system approach that encompasses the entire value chain from upstream to downstream. The objective of this study is to identify the potential of village flagship commodities within an integrated agribusiness system and to develop an Agribusiness Modernization System (AMS) through a case study conducted in Suci Village, Panti Subdistrict, Jember Regency, East Java. Agribusiness modernization has been shown to facilitate the introduction of appropriate technologies, enhance value-chain efficiency for agricultural products, and strengthen the capacities of farmers and local enterprises. Flagship commodities can be determined not merely by historical quantitative advantages but by competitive potential validated through four empirical domains: (1) biophysical contextuality verification, (2) sensory quality validation, (3) market valuation assessment, and (4) institutional readiness analysis. This study demonstrates that integrating the pillars of socio-economic governance with biophysical potential yields a comprehensive approach to rural development. The Place-Based Commodity Selection Framework provides a definitive answer to the fundamental question of commodity selection by moving beyond descriptive–historical methods toward a prescriptive–strategic paradigm. The four-domain analysis convincingly identifies coffee as the flagship commodity of Suci Village, with validation supported by convergent evidence on biophysical suitability, sensory quality potential, significant economic value opportunities, and institutional preparedness. Thus, this study makes a practical contribution to the development of sustainable and competitive rural agribusiness.
