Abstract

Adolescent smoking behavior remains a significant public health issue, contributing to the increased risk of non-communicable diseases and reduced quality of life. Schools play a strategic role as a locus for educational interventions in smoking prevention. This community service activity aimed to enhance the knowledge and awareness of students at SIMA Junior High School, Padang, regarding the dangers of smoking through a school-based education program. The method employed was a participatory community-based approach involving 30 students. The program consisted of socialization, interactive counseling, and the distribution of educational media in the form of an educational video. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test to measure changes in students’ knowledge before and after the intervention. The results showed an increase in the mean knowledge score from 71.99 in the pre-test to 76.0 in the post-test. A paired t-test yielded p=0.002 (<0.05), indicating a statistically significant improvement in students’ knowledge about the dangers of smoking after the intervention. Although the distribution of the “high knowledge” category slightly decreased, the overall increase in mean scores suggests that the educational program effectively strengthened students’ understanding. In conclusion, the school-based educational program proved effective in improving students’ knowledge about the dangers of smoking. Program sustainability requires periodic updating of educational materials and active collaboration among schools, teachers, parents, and the community. Such efforts are expected to prevent the emergence of novice smokers and support the establishment of a healthy, smoke-free school environment.

Abstract

Sungai Pisang, located in the Bungus Teluk Kabung District, is a coastal area with approximately 2,116 residents, most of whom earn their livelihood as fishermen. The community faces interrelated nutritional and sanitation problems, primarily due to limited waste-management facilities. Household waste and fish-processing residues are commonly burned or buried, resulting in environmental pollution and increasing the risk of infectious diseases. These conditions negatively affect the community’s nutritional status, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children under five and pregnant women. This community service program aims to strengthen community capacity in improving nutrition and sanitation through a participatory empowerment approach. The activities were carried out through preparation, socialization, and intervention. These included official meetings with local authorities, health education sessions for housewives, mothers of young children, and community health volunteers, as well as a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to develop applicable waste-management solutions. The results showed an increase in community knowledge regarding balanced nutrition and family health. In addition, residents agreed to initiate organic-waste composting and reduce the use of single-use plastics. This program integrates nutrition interventions with environmentally based sanitation improvements, emphasizing that nutritional enhancement cannot be separated from local ecological conditions. Collaboration among local government, health workers, and the community is essential to creating a sustainable healthy environment that supports comprehensive improvements in nutritional status.

Abstract

Anemia remains one of the major nutritional problems commonly affecting adolescent girls, with a relatively high prevalence in many countries, including Indonesia. This condition is primarily caused by inadequate iron intake and low adherence to Iron-Folic Acid (IFA) or iron tablet supplementation programs. Limited knowledge and low interest among adolescents in nutrition-related information contribute to poor preventive behaviors. Traditional educational methods, such as lectures, tend to be one-way and less engaging for this age group. In contrast, audiovisual media are considered more effective because they combine visual and auditory elements that make health messages easier to understand and remember. This study aims to review the effectiveness of audiovisual media in preventing anemia among adolescent girls based on recent research findings. This study employed a literature review method by searching articles from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed databases using the keywords “audiovisual education,” “anemia prevention,” and “adolescent girls.” The review process was conducted systematically through four main stages: organization, synthesis, identification, and advanced analysis. Articles were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, including publication year (2020–2025), participants aged 13–19 years, and a focus on the effectiveness of audiovisual media in anemia prevention. Five eligible articles were thematically analyzed to draw conclusions regarding the impact of audiovisual media on adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and preventive behaviors toward anemia. The review findings indicated that the use of audiovisual media consistently improved adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and motivation in anemia prevention. Several studies reported an increased in adherence to iron supplementation following audiovisual-based educational interventions. This medium was also perceived as more engaging and easier to comprehend compared to conventional approaches. Audiovisual media serve as an effective, engaging, and interactive educational tool to enhance knowledge and promote preventive behaviors against anemia among adolescent girls.

Abstract

Nutritional problems in toddlers, such as stunting and underweight , as well as non-compliance in growth and development monitoring remain major public health challenges. Participation in health services such as Posyandu and other determinants that influence nutritional status need to be identified more deeply to determine appropriate interventions. This study aims to synthesize current research on the determinants of nutritional status, successful weight gain, and factors that influence the utilization of toddler health services. The method used is a literature review by searching for articles online through the Google Scholar database (13,430 articles), ScienceDirect (6,674 articles), and PubMed (499 articles). The article search used the keywords "weight gain in toddler," "toddler nutritional status , " and "Health Service Utilization in Toddlers" articles published within the last five years (2020–2025). The data analysis process went through the process of organizing , synthesizing , identifying , and further analyzing until 10 selected research articles were obtained. The research design analyzed mostly used a cross-sectional and descriptive analytical approach, with study locations covering various regions in Indonesia and one international comparative study. The results of the study show that low maternal education is the dominant determinant factor in the incidence of underweight And stunting . Key biological risk factors include a history of low birth weight (LBW), incomplete immunization status, and a history of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and diarrhea . In terms of services, the frequency of visits to integrated health posts (Posyandu) and nutritional counseling are significantly associated with normal nutritional status. Furthermore, the effectiveness of utilizing health data for prevention is crucial. stunting influenced by the level of education and time allocation of Posyandu cadres. The nutritional status of toddlers is influenced by a complex array of factors , including parental characteristics (especially maternal education), the child's health history (immunizations and infections), and active participation in Posyandu (Integrated Health Posts). Nutrition improvement interventions must integrate maternal education, infectious disease prevention, and capacity building for health workers.

Abstract

Abstract. Personal hygiene is an important aspect in preventing infectious diseases, particularly in Islamic boarding schools where students live in a communal environment with a high risk of environmentally based disease transmission. This community service activity aimed to analyze the effect of personal hygiene education on the knowledge level of seventh-grade students at Al-Falah Islamic Boarding School in Padang City. A pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design was applied. The sample consisted of 53 seventh-grade students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a validated personal hygiene knowledge questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and inferentially using a paired t-test. The results showed that the average pre-test score was 89.43, while the average post-test score increased to 90.19, with a mean difference of 0.75 points. Statistical analysis indicated a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (p < 0.05). Although the increase in knowledge was relatively small, personal hygiene education was proven to have a significant effect on improving students’ knowledge. These findings highlight the importance of implementing continuous and innovative health education programs to promote clean and healthy living behaviors in Islamic boarding school settings.
