Abstract

This article presents a theoretical reconstruction of educational leadership through the integration of local wisdom values using a qualitative literature study approach. The background of this study lies in the dominance of universal leadership models that tend to marginalize socio-cultural contexts, resulting in educational leadership practices that are less adaptive and less meaningful in local settings. This condition indicates the need for a reorientation of educational leadership toward a contextual and culturally grounded paradigm, particularly in multicultural societies such as Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative literature review by analyzing national and international journal articles and academic books published within the last ten years that discuss educational leadership and local wisdom. Data were analyzed using content analysis and thematic analysis to identify conceptual patterns, core values, and leadership practices that reflect local wisdom. The findings reveal that local wisdom values such as gotong royong, musyawarah, exemplary leadership, social harmony, and environmental awareness constitute a strategic foundation for reconstructing educational leadership that is contextual, humanistic, and participatory. The integration of these values strengthens school culture, enhances teacher performance and discipline, promotes participatory decision-making, and reinforces school–community relations. This study concludes that reconstructing educational leadership based on local wisdom not only enriches leadership theory with cultural and contextual dimensions but also provides a sustainable alternative framework for educational leadership practices in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigated the role of local wisdom–based school culture in improving students’ discipline and learning motivation. The research aimed to identify the forms of local cultural values implemented in the school, examine strategies used in applying those values, and analyze their impact on students’ academic behavior. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach to explore the phenomenon naturally and understand the meaning behind the actions and experiences of the participants. Data were collected through observations of school cultural activities, in-depth interviews with the principal, five teachers, and ten students, and documentation of school records and relevant programs. The findings revealed that the school implemented several forms of Bugis local wisdom, including the values of siri’ na pacce, mutual cooperation (massiddeng), politeness through greeting habits, religious routines, and the use of local language as a cultural preservation approach. These values were integrated through exemplary leadership, structured habituation, curriculum and extracurricular programs, and collaboration with parents and the community. The results indicated a significant improvement in student discipline, demonstrated by a decrease in rule violations and an increase in responsibility and punctuality. Additionally, students’ learning motivation increased due to a positive school climate, emotional bonding with the school, and cultural identity pride. The study concluded that school culture based on local wisdom served as an effective strategy for character building and enhancing academic motivation, and it is recommended to be implemented sustainably in schools.

Abstract

School principals play a strategic role in determining school direction and performance through effective and contextual leadership. Numerous studies indicate that principal leadership significantly influences teacher performance, instructional quality, school culture, and students’ academic achievement. However, research on educational leadership has largely focused on general approaches such as transformational and instructional leadership, while studies on local wisdom–based school leadership remain limited and have not been systematically synthesized. In fact, Indonesia’s socio-cultural diversity requires leadership models that are not only managerially effective but also culturally relevant. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze local wisdom–based school principal leadership models and their contributions to improving school performance. This study employed a qualitative approach using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method on reputable national and international journal articles published between 2015 and 2025. The literature selection process followed the PRISMA stages, including identification, screening, and systematic analysis of articles. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns, key themes, and research gaps. The findings reveal that local wisdom–based school leadership, through the integration of values such as mutual cooperation, deliberation, role modeling, religiosity, and social harmony, significantly contributes to strengthening school culture and climate, improving teacher performance, and enhancing school performance in a multidimensional manner. It is concluded that local wisdom–based school principal leadership represents a contextual and sustainable leadership strategy and should be developed as a key reference for strengthening educational leadership policies and practices in Indonesia.
