Abstract

A modern society’s response to the hoax phenomena in the information age exposes challenges to confidence, information integrity, and significant public health consequences. This study intends to help increase literacy and community resistance to the spread of hoaxes, particularly emphasising the role of critical literacy and digital literacy. This study employed a thorough and systematic qualitative descriptive approach to investigate the hoax phenomenon. There are two primary stages to this method. First, literature analysis provides the foundation for comprehending the features and consequences of incorrect information. Second, a field approach was conducted using an online survey with ten questions. A survey of 108 respondents found that efforts to enhance media literacy, rigorous education, and empower individuals to become more informed consumers. The findings of this study reveal that several sorts of hoaxes are often encountered in the digital age, each with its unique set of features. One research focus is on political hoaxes, which are frequently used to influence public opinion or harm political opponents’ reputations by spreading false claims about policies or utterances that are taken out of context. The poll results reveal that people’s critical literacy must be strengthened, particularly in information verification and news interpretation.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilaksanakan untuk merespons permasalahan lingkungan di sekitar sekolah serta kebutuhan peningkatan pemahaman dan kepedulian warga sekolah terhadap isu ekologis. Tujuan utamanya adalah memperkenalkan konsep ekoliterasi kepada guru dan siswa melalui media digital berbentuk microlearning yang disajikan secara ringkas, visual, dan mudah dipahami. Metode kegiatan meliputi observasi kondisi lingkungan sekolah, koordinasi dengan pihak sekolah, sosialisasi ekoliterasi, pengenalan contoh microlearning, serta pendampingan awal dalam pemanfaatannya pada diskusi kelas. Kegiatan diikuti oleh 68 peserta. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa materi mudah dipahami dan mampu menambah wawasan baru terkait ekoliterasi. Lebih dari 80% peserta juga melaporkan peningkatan motivasi untuk menerapkan perilaku ramah lingkungan, menandakan adanya perubahan positif tidak hanya pada aspek pengetahuan, tetapi juga sikap dan niat perilaku. Selain itu, penggunaan pendekatan microlearning terbukti relevan dan diterima di konteks SMK, terlihat dari tingginya penilaian terhadap materi yang menarik, mudah diakses, dan penjelasan narasumber yang jelas. Pendampingan juga memunculkan embrio komunitas belajar kecil yang peduli ekoliterasi. Secara keseluruhan, kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa media pembelajaran singkat efektif sebagai pemantik kesadaran ekologis dan mampu meningkatkan keterlibatan guru serta siswa dalam isu lingkungan.

Abstract

Background: Probability learning requires not only procedural computation but also probabilistic reasoning and probabilistic literacy to interpret uncertainty meaningfully. However, many mathematics education students still experience difficulties in understanding discrete random variable concepts and communicating probabilistic meaning contextually. Previous studies have generally examined probabilistic reasoning and probabilistic literacy separately, with limited integration using SOLO Taxonomy as a cognitive framework. Aims: This study aimed to investigate students’ probabilistic reasoning and probabilistic literacy in solving discrete random variable problems through SOLO Taxonomy. Method: A mixed-methods design was employed involving 20 fifth-semester mathematics education students enrolled in an Introduction to Probability Theory course. Data were collected through probabilistic reasoning tests, probabilistic literacy questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. Students’ responses were classified into five SOLO Taxonomy levels and analyzed using descriptive and thematic approaches. Results: The findings revealed that most students were categorized at the Unistructural (45%) and Prestructural (30%) levels, indicating fragmented conceptual understanding and limited probabilistic interpretation. Only a small proportion achieved Relational (5%) and Extended Abstract (5%) levels. Higher probabilistic literacy was associated with more integrated reasoning, coherent interpretation, and stronger logical justification. Conclusion: Probabilistic literacy and probabilistic reasoning are closely interconnected competencies in solving discrete random variable problems. SOLO Taxonomy provides an effective framework for identifying students’ probabilistic thinking structures and supporting higher-order probabilistic learning development.
