Abstract

Abstract

The development of artificial intelligence technology, particularly generative artificial intelligence (generative AI), has brought about significant changes, especially in higher education. This condition requires students not only to understand the use of basic digital tools but also to master advanced digital literacy, which includes evaluative, strategic, and adaptive abilities in response to technological automation. This study aims to explore students’ readiness to master advanced digital literacy and identify the factors influencing it. This study employed a qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis involving students in the Civic Education Study Program at Halu Oleo University. The findings show that students demonstrate high readiness to utilize AI for academic needs and technological adaptation. However, this readiness is not balanced with adequate information validation abilities, understanding AI mechanisms, and awareness of digital ethics. These findings align with advanced digital literacy theories that emphasize the evaluative, ethical, and critical aspects of modern technology use. The tables included in this study reinforce the pattern that students’ readiness tends to be stronger in operational aspects but weaker in reflective and evaluative ones. This study contributes to the development of a more adaptive advanced digital literacy learning model in higher education for the generative AI ecosystem.

Abstract

Abstract

Legal learning in the Pancasila and Civic Education (PPKn) study program plays a strategic role in shaping students’ legal awareness as prospective civic educators. This study aims to reveal how the legal learning process contributes to strengthening the civic legal literacy of PPKn students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Halu Oleo. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten PPKn students from the 2025 cohort, observation, and documentation study, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldāña. The findings reveal five main themes representing the strengthening of students’ civic legal literacy: the strengthening of legal understanding and knowledge, the effectiveness of case-based learning, increased awareness of rights and obligations and a supportive attitude toward fair law enforcement, strengthened critical thinking and anti-hoax legal literacy, and the concrete application of legal values in daily life. This study confirms that civic legal literacy is formed through a graduated process from knowledge to legal behavior, and that case-based learning proves to be an effective key strategy, although the complexity of legal language and limited field practice experience remain challenges that require attention

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perceptions and attitudes of Pancasila and Civic Education (PPKn) students at Universitas Halu Oleo toward the values of Pancasila amid the post-truth phenomenon, and to describe how they respond to digital information that contradicts those values. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews with eight active PPKn students and analyzed thematically. The findings show that students possess a conceptually mature perception of Pancasila values and a solid understanding of post-truth characteristics, largely shaped by their coursework. Indonesian Unity and Just and Civilized Humanity were perceived as the values most frequently challenged in digital spaces. In terms of attitude, students demonstrated a skeptical-reflective response pattern, applied layered verification strategies, and acted as informal digital-literacy educators for their peers and families. However, a "silent bystander" phenomenon was also identified among fellow students, indicating a gap between cognitive awareness and the courage to act. These findings suggest that strengthening conceptual understanding through Pancasila and Civic Education should be balanced with strengthening students' self-efficacy and constructive critical attitudes to face disinformation more effectively

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has significantly transformed patterns of social interaction, particularly among university students, who represent one of the most active groups of social media users. Social media has become a digital public sphere that enables individuals to express opinions, participate in public discussions, and access information quickly. However, the growth of freedom of expression in digital spaces has also been accompanied by an increase in various forms of digital negativity, such as hate speech, destructive comments, cyberbullying, the spread of hoaxes, and communication practices that fail to reflect social ethics. This phenomenon poses challenges to the implementation of Pancasila values, which emphasize humanity, unity, tolerance, and respect for differences. This study aims to reveal and understand students’ interpretation of the phenomenon of digital negativity from the perspective of Pancasila values. This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to explore the lived experiences of students in facing the flow of digital negativity on social media. The research informants consisted of eight active students selected purposely based on the intensity of their social media use and their experiences interacting with negative content in digital spaces. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using Moustakas’ phenomenological model through the stages of epoche, horizontalization, thematic clustering, textural description, structural description, and the synthesis of the essence of experience. The results show that students interpret digital negativity as a phenomenon that is increasingly normalized in everyday digital life. Experiences of interacting with negative comments, hate speech, and digital conflict shape students’ critical awareness of the importance of communication ethics on social media. Students view freedom of expression in digital spaces as often being interpreted excessively, thereby disregarding the values of humanity and unity. On the other hand, Pancasila is still perceived as a relevant moral guideline  for  building  a  healthy  digital  communication  culture,  even  though  its implementation faces various challenges due to the development of an increasingly individualistic and emotional digital culture. This study confirms the importance of strengthening digital literacy grounded in Pancasila values as an effort to build ethical, critical, and responsible digital citizenship.

Abstract

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have not only enriched the technology landscape in higher education but have also transformed academic thinking by introducing new patterns of interaction between human cognitive abilities and machine intelligence. However, the level of student acceptance of AI as an educational assistant in thesis writing still needs to be proven through empirical research. The purpose of this study was to assess changes in students’ attitudes and perceptions before and after AI-assisted thesis writing training and to measure the magnitude of the training’s influence through effect size analysis. The study employed a quasi-experimental approach with a one-group pretest–posttest design, involving 27 students from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Halu Oleo University in Southeast Sulawesi. The research instrument was adapted from Ng (2012), covering three aspects: attitudes towards AI, technical digital literacy, and cognitive-social-emotional digital literacy. The data were analysed using a paired samples t-test and Cohen’s d effect size. The results showed a significant increase in students’ perceptions from 54.44 (SD = 5.03) to 68.81 (SD = 7.44) (t = –8.914; p < .001). Cohen’s d = –1.716 and Hedges’ correction = –1.666 values indicate a considerable effect. The highest increase occurred in attitudes towards AI (Δ = +6.43) and technical digital literacy (Δ = +5.95). These findings demonstrate that the use of AI not only enhances students’ digital skills but also cultivates reflective attitudes and ethical awareness in thesis writing.
