Abstract

Motivation has been long regarded as one of the prominent factors affecting second language acquisition. Numerous studies have been conducted to see what plays the most important role in learning a language over the years (Dornyei, 1994, p.273). The studies of L2 motivation were mostly inspired by the works of two psychologists, Robert Gardner and Wallace Lambert, with their socio-psychological approach (ibid). This paper will focus on the notions of integrative and instrumental motivational approach in accordance with Gardner’s and Dornyei’s view, their relevance in today's society, and empirical studies being conducted within this field. It appears that each study in L2 motivation offers different result and each researcher offers different theoretical framework in which it portrays the nature of motivation as being dynamic and not restricted (Dornyei, 2006). However, it can be argued that the notion of integrative and instrumental motivation contribute a huge influence on L2 motivation research over the past decades. With the development of L2 motivation research, it is expected that more practical guidelines in improving learners’ motivation in classroom context will be uncovered.

Abstract

Technology has shifted teacher-centered approach to a more student-centered learning, where students construct their own understanding and acquire new language while also building networks and socializing with their peers in a meaningful communication. This mixed-method research aimed to explore students’ perspectives in using Instagram as a platform to learn English. The findings of the research showed that most students felt more motivated in learning English in classrooms where Instagram is integrated as a learning tool. More importantly, students also felt more engaged in meaningful communication during the learning process, which is in accordance with the previously conducted studies. Students also revealed that Instagram can promote meaningful interaction as well as learner autonomy which are essential for their life outside the classroom.

Abstract

Compared to motivation, demotivation is still a relatively new topic in the field of language learning. This present study aims to investigate demotivational factors among Madrasa (religious educational institution) students in the Indonesian EFL context. This study employed a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory design in which the quantitative phase was conducted before the qualitative phase. A 25-close-ended questionnaire along with one open-ended question were filled by 190 Madrasa students. To expand the results of the questionnaire, interviews with two students were conducted. Through a descriptive analysis and thematic analysis, five key demotivators were revealed, they are a) the nature of the target language, b) lesson-specific factors, c) learning materials, d) teacher-related factors, and e) the learning environment. The results also indicated some factors which are not included in the questionnaire, they are a) lack of self-confidence, b) lack of intrinsic motivation, c) lack of learning community, and d) teacher gender. Although previously students’ religious beliefs were said to affect the students’ demotivation, it appeared that half of the students did not consider them to be demotivating. Instead of religious beliefs, the students found the nature of English as the most demotivating factor, which contradicts the findings of previous demotivation studies that found teachers as the main demotivating factor.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The kitab munakahat so far only presents Islamic procedures for intercourse, the wife's obligations to her husband, or the husband's rights to his wife which are full of patriarchal nuances. Different from other classical Islamic books, the Kitab Adabul Muasyaroh by KH. Yasin Asmuni offers mutuality in marriage towards a saadah marriage as in the marriage of the Prophet Muhammad and Khadijah al Kubro. This study focuses on describing the concept of saadah marriage in the Kitab Adabul Muasyarah using a critical discourse approach. The results of the study show that in terms of text, there are rewording, overwording, euphemisms, and metaphors; intertextually it was found that the thoughts of KH. Yasin Asmuni in this book were influenced by two Islamic thinkers, namely Abu Hamid Al Ghazali and Jamaluddin al-Qosimi. The justice of the division of rights and obligations of husband and wife in this book uses the mubadalah 'mutual' approach which is in line with the reading of Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir’s theory of Mubadalah which was published twenty years after this book was published. Explanatively, it is found that this book positions husband and wife proportionally as evidenced by the existence of obligations and rights for husband and wife. Another uniqueness of this book is the existence of a contradiction in thought in the form of the husband's dominance over his wife in the early part and the mutuality and equality of husband and wife in the middle to the end of the Kitab Adabul Muasyaroh because this book is a kitab khulasah that combines the thoughts of two Islamic thinkers, occurs.

Halal tourism is one of the emerging sectors in the halal industry. The article aims to identify the main problems, solutions, and strategies for developing a model of halal tourism. The qualitative and quantitative approaches are used in this article, including in-depth interviews and expert group discussions with the community leaders, academics, culinary and travel entrepreneurs, local tourism board, hotel entrepreneurs, and tourists representing halal tourism stakeholders. The data was complemented with research questionnaires and compiled using the Analytic Network Process (ANP) method, with Super Decision as a data processing tool. The article provides empirical insights into halal tourism in Indonesia, focusing on the root cause, the outcome of solutions, and the formulation of a future development strategy. Government-related issues remain the main priority, followed by community and halal facilities entrepreneur issues (hotel, travel, and halal food). The results showed that the priority problem in developing halal tourism in Indonesia is infrastructure problems. The solution is to build adequate road infrastructure, repair damaged roads, and complete road direction to halal tourism locations in every region of Indonesia. Halal tourism goals in Indonesia can be realized by implementing a functional synergy between the government and the local community.
