Abstract

This study examines the interpersonal communication network of farmer groups in coordinating the use of combine harvesters for rice harvesting in Pidoli Lombang Village Panyabungan Subdistrict Mandailing Natal Regency. The research focuses on two farmer groups Willem Iskander and Biara Dagang with a total of 60 farmer respondents. The study applies a descriptive quantitative approach using Social Network Analysis SNA. Primary data were collected through a survey and sociometric questions to construct an actor to actor communication matrix then analyzed using UCINET VI and visualized with NetDraw. The analysis focuses on outdegree indegree closeness and betweenness centrality to identify key actors and information flow patterns related to harvest scheduling field rotation cost agreement and operator assignment. The results show that in the Willem Iskander farmer group actor NS holds the most strategic position as an information disseminator a main reference and a communication broker as indicated by outdegree 0.207 indegree 0.62 closeness 1.97 and betweenness 8.72. In the Biara Dagang farmer group dissemination and brokerage roles are more distributed across several members with the highest outdegree for PL 0.76 the main reference for PN 0.62 the highest closeness for AK 1.95 and a prominent brokerage role for KH 3.27. In conclusion the communication network structure in Pidoli Lombang forms central actors who shape the speed and direction of coordination in combine harvester use so strengthening the capacity of key actors may improve the effectiveness of harvest mechanization at the local level.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication network among agricultural extension workers involved in the implementation of Salibu rice cultivation technology in Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra. This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach supported by sociometric and sociogram analysis, with data collected through surveys, observations, and interviews. The results show that the communication network follows a Radial Personal Network pattern, with actors functioning as opinion leaders, bridges, liaison officers, and isolates, while educational level, extension experience, and the use of information media influence actors’ positions within the network. Higher participation in the communication network also enhances the effectiveness of information dissemination and supports the adoption of Salibu technology. These findings suggest that strengthening communication networks and optimizing the roles of key actors are essential to improve extension effectiveness and support the sustainable diffusion of Salibu rice cultivation innovation.

Abstract

The contemporary agricultural sector faces complex challenges due to global environmental volatility, demanding rapid adaptive responses from agrarian communities. This study aims to analyze in depth the role of Dalihan Na Tolu as a cultural communication system that bridges ecological sense-making in the collective decision-making of farmers in Manyabar Village, Panyabungan District, Mandailing Natal Regency. The research method employed is a descriptive qualitative library research through content analysis of reputable scientific literature spanning from 2018 to 2025. The synthesis results demonstrate that the triadic sociocultural network (Mora, Kahanggi, and Anak Boru) actively functions as a social anchor and an external information filter in facing ecological crises. Through two-way circular interactions, environmental uncertainty is successfully transformed into rational adaptation actions, such as irrigation management and planting schedule determination (marbuka saba). Quantification of empirical data reveals that the highest farmer compliance rate is in the resolution of irrigation water distribution conflicts (94.5%) and the lowest is in modern wage tariff penetration (78.5%). This indicates a clash between traditional kinship values and subsistent economic calculations in suburban areas. This study concludes that the flexibility of the Dalihan Na Tolu structure provides high sociological resilience for the local agricultural ecosystem against the onslaught of exploitative agrarian modernization.
