Abstract

The ogoh-ogoh cultural parade held on the mornings of Ramadan in Purwoharjo District, Banyuwangi Regency, is a fascinating social phenomenon because it involves Hindu religious practices that coincide with the Muslim fasting month. This study aims to analyze the social construction of this cultural parade and the meanings it constructs through interfaith social interactions. This research employed a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods. Data collection involved direct observation and in-depth interviews with Hindu religious leaders, community leaders, and Muslims who participated in or witnessed the cultural parade. The results indicate that the cultural parade is constructed as a symbol of tolerance, togetherness, and respect between religious communities through processes of externalization, objectification, and internalization. The cultural parade serves not only as a religious ritual but also as a medium for strengthening the social identity of the pluralistic and harmonious Purwoharjo community.

Abstract

Urban agrarian legal conflicts in Indonesia started to arise following state land governance policies and the acceleration of land asset certification, raising questions about land rights and legal protection for long-term residents. During the 2024 Surabaya mayoral election, tensions intensified as PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) accelerated land-asset certification, affecting residents in several urban neighbourhoods. The dispute over the legal certainty of land rights entered the electoral arena and was politicised by political elites as a strategy to mobilise support and secure electoral victory. This article examines how agrarian legal conflict is politicised as political capital and how affected residents interpret and respond to limited political choices when their right to the city is under threat. A qualitative approach was employed through field observation, document analysis, and in-depth interviews conducted in three affected sub-districts in Surabaya: Petemon, Gundih, and Pacar Keling. The analysis integrates the theory of political representation developed by Hanna Pitkin with the perspective of fiqh siyasah concerning ‘adl (justice), maslahah (public welfare), and political legitimacy as articulated by Abu al-Hasan al-Mawardi. The findings reveal three patterns of political responses among affected residents: political apathy due to weakened channels of representation; clientelistic co-optation through neighbourhood governance networks, such as RT/RW, accompanied by promises of compensation; and electoral resistance expressed through support for the empty-box option. Politicising agrarian legal conflict proved effective as political capital, leading to a procedural electoral victory. However, from a fiqh siyasah perspective, political legitimacy cannot be determined solely by electoral success but must also reflect justice and the protection of public welfare. This study contributes theoretically by employing fiqh siyasah as an analytical framework to evaluate the gap between procedural electoral victory and normative legitimacy in urban agrarian conflicts. Abstract

This study analyzes the paradox between the use of religious symbolism in local election campaigns in Indonesia in 2024 and the corruption committed by several Muslim local leaders after their election. The study employs a qualitative design that combines a normative-juridical approach with comparative socio-political analysis through case studies of five regional heads in East Kolaka, Ponorogo, Central Lampung, Bekasi, and Riau who were arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in 2025. Normative data were obtained from the literature on siyāsa sharʿiyya, anti-corruption laws and regulations, and official KPK documents. In contrast, empirical data were analyzed using Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic capital and Max Weber’s theory of charismatic authority. The results indicate that religious symbolism plays an effective role in building electoral legitimacy but does not translate into ethical commitment in governance. Religious identity functions more as political capital than as a foundation for public integrity. These findings suggest that the combination of the instrumentalization of religious symbols and high electoral costs creates incentives for post-election rent-seeking. In practical terms, this study recommends strengthening political integrity through electoral financing reform, ethical oversight of public officials, and the development of leadership indicators that emphasize integrity alongside religious symbolism.

Abstract

The increasing polarization and destructive khilafiyah debates in the digital space demand a more substantive reconstruction of the ethics of religious discourse. This study analyzes Al-Ghazali's critique of jidal and mira' in Ihya Ulum al-Din and formulates a model for managing differences based on Maqasid al-Shari'ah. Using a qualitative approach of literature study and narrative review, content analysis is applied to Al-Ghazali's text and contemporary maqasid literature of the last five years. The results show that destructive debates are rooted in spiritual pathologies such as riya (riya) and self-dominance, which contradict the objectives of sharia (Islamic law) to safeguard religion (hifz al-din) and the soul (hifz al-nafs). The synthesis produces a "Systemic Moral" model that emphasizes tazkiyah as an internal prerequisite and public welfare as an external parameter. This study integrates personal Sufism and public law, and emphasizes the importance of transformative digital etiquette for social cohesion and harmony among the people.
