Abstract

This research focuses on the study of the concept of qanā’ah and its influence on mental health according to Buya Hamka in Tafsir al-Azhar. The purpose of this research is to explain how Buya Hamka interprets verses related to qanā’ah and its relevance to mental health. The research method used is a qualitative method with a library research approach. The primary source of this research is Tafsir al-Azhar by Buya Hamka, while secondary sources consist of classical and contemporary tafsir books, Sufism books, and Islamic psychology literature. Data analysis was carried out using the thematic method (maudhu’i). The results of the study indicate that qanā’ah according to Buya Hamka includes five dimensions: accepting willingly for what is there, asking for additional sustenance with appropriate efforts, being patient with Allah’s provisions, putting one’s trust in Allah, and not being attracted to the deceit of the world. This concept, when applied, functions as a self-control mechanism that can prevent the emergence of heart diseases such as envy, jealousy, greed, and complaints. From an Islamic psychological perspective, contentment can foster inner peace, gratitude, optimism, and resilience in the face of life’s difficulties. Thus, contentment is not merely a spiritual value but also significantly contributes to achieving individual mental health and social harmony.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the experiences of Minangkabau individuals who converted to Christianity and to analyze how they negotiate ethnic identity, social belonging, and family relationships after religious conversion. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight Minangkabau converts residing in Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Medan, Ambon, and Makassar and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that conversion occurred through diverse pathways, including interfaith marriage, emotional attachment, personal conviction, and prolonged interaction within religiously diverse environments. Despite experiencing varying levels of family resistance and social exclusion, participants continued to maintain kinship ties, cultural attachments, and a strong sense of belonging to the Minangkabau community. The study demonstrated that religious conversion did not necessarily diminish ethnic identity but instead generated an ongoing process of identity negotiation and social adaptation. These findings contribute to the anthropology of religion and identity studies by showing that cultural belonging can persist despite significant religious transformation, giving rise to what this study conceptualizes as a “New Minangkabau” identity in increasingly plural social contexts.

Abstract

The practice of reciting Surah al-Takāṡur in the marzoah tradition in Islamic cemeteries in Medan City represents a form of Qur’an reception that lives within the socio-religious space while simultaneously emphasizing the urgency of a living Qur’an approach to understanding the dynamic relationship between the sacred text and death-ritual practices. The study focuses on analyzing the pattern of community reception, the construction of meaning attached to Surah al-Takāṡur, and the relationship between the text and death-memorialization practices in the local context. A qualitative approach based on the living Qur’an is used, with data collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using a thematic-interpretive framework to uncover layers of symbolic and functional meaning. The findings show variations in reception patterns that include performative, spiritual, and communal dimensions; Surah al-Takāṡur is understood as an eschatological reminder, an instrument for reflection on mortality, and a medium for strengthening social solidarity in death rituals. The construction of meaning develops through the interaction between normative teachings, local traditions, and the collective experiences of the congregation, resulting in an integration between textual messages and social practices. The relationship between text and practice demonstrates an adaptive negotiation of meaning, where Qur’anic recitation is not merely a symbolic ritual but a means of internalizing values and shaping the community’s religious identity. The implications of this study enrich the theoretical framework of the living Qur’an and provide an empirical contribution to understanding the contextual and meaningful layers of Muslim religious practice.

Abstract

Acute respiratory infections (ARI) in toddlers remain an urgent health issue in Indonesia because toddlers are susceptible to infection due to their immature immune systems. The physical environment of the home plays a major role as a risk factor, especially in homes with poor ventilation, minimal lighting, high humidity, and inadequate sanitation. The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between housing density, the presence of ventilation, the presence of windows, lighting, and temperature with the incidence of ISPA in infants in Pasar Simundol Village. The research method used is quantitative with a cross-sectional design. The sample size in this study is 55 infants, calculated using the Lameshow formula. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the chi-square test. The results of the study showed a relationship between the presence of windows (PR = 1.697; p = 0.019 < 0.05), the presence of ventilation (PR = 1.080; p = 0.030 < 0.05), lighting (PR = 1.753; 0.011 < 0.05), temperature (PR = 1.733; p = 0.012 < 0.05), and humidity (PR = 1.853; p = 0.026), while there was no association with housing density (PR = 1.175; p = 0.832 > 0.05). It is recommended that the community improve the physical conditions of their homes, such as adding ventilation, windows, and maintaining cleanliness and lighting to reduce the risk of respiratory infections in infants.
