Abstract

This study aims to explore the challenges faced by Thai students and the strategies they employ in Indonesian language learning in the BIPA program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), where English is used as a Medium of Instruction (EMI). The increasing use of EMI in multilingual educational settings has created both opportunities and challenges for international students who are learning a new language through another foreign language. The research focuses on analyzing the types of learning difficulties students experience when EMI is used as the instructional language and the factors contributing to these challenges. A qualitative case study research methodology was employed, collecting data through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations with five Thai students participating in the BIPA program. The interviews were conducted to explore students’ perceptions of their learning experiences, while classroom observations were used to examine how students interacted with the lecturer and responded to EMI during classroom activities. The result indicated that students faced language challenges including limited English language proficiency, difficulty processing multiple languages simultaneously, and difficulty understanding explanations from English-speaking instructors. Classroom observations also revealed that students frequently used online translation tools and sought peer assistance to better understand lessons. In several situations, students relied on their classmates to clarify instructions and translate unfamiliar vocabulary into their native language. Despite these challenges, students developed various learning strategies such as using translation applications, collaborating with peers, and self-studying vocabulary. These strategies demonstrate students’ ability to adapt to a multilingual learning environment and actively manage their language learning process. These findings suggest that while EMI may create language barriers in multilingual classrooms, appropriate teaching strategies and peer support can help students cope with these challenges and enhance their learning experiences in the BIPA program.

Abstract

Abstract

This study evaluates the strategies for teaching Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) in Islamic religious higher education institutions, focusing on their effectiveness, challenges, and implementation success rates. The study was conducted through observations at the Language Center of UIN Bandung, interviews with stakeholders, and analysis of program evaluation results. Findings indicate that competency-based strategies, such as pre-tests and post-tests, are effective in enhancing foreign students' language skills, particularly in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Additionally, the BIPA program successfully strengthened students' understanding of religious values and local culture. However, challenges include differences in students' linguistic backgrounds, limited learning tools, and difficulties integrating learning materials with cultural and religious contexts. The study concludes that the evaluation strategies applied have shown significant results, although curriculum adaptation and technology-based approaches are needed to improve efficiency. This research provides valuable contributions to the development of more effective BIPA programs in Islamic religious higher education institutions to support intercultural dialogue and global integration.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and causal factors of phonological interference in the pronunciation of the Latin alphabet and to examine their impact on the dictation performance of Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA) learners from non-Latin script backgrounds. The data consist of pronunciation errors and dictation writing errors, specifically problematic phonemic and vowel contrasts. The results show phonological interference in the form of voiced–voiceless consonant substitutions (b–p, g–k, t–d, s–z), affricate confusion (c–j), liquid consonant interchange (r–l), reduction of mid–high vowel contrasts (e–i), and reduction of back vowel contrasts (o–u). This interference is apparent simultaneously in spoken production and in the written form of dictation, indicating a disruption in phonemic perception rather than merely in articulation. The primary causes of this interference lie in the differences between the phonological systems of the learners’ native languages (Thai and Khmer) and Indonesian; the differences in script systems (non-Latin versus Latin); and the phonological transfer from English as an intermediary language and source of Latin letter pronunciation patterns. The proposed pedagogical implication is the need to reinforce the stage of script familiarization as a process of phonological reconstruction through minimal pair exercises, phonemic perception training, articulatory exercises, and the regular use of diagnostic dictation exercises.

Abstract

The Javanese people created some batik patterns depicting the human life-cycle, from birth to death. These motifs have high cultural and philosophical value. They are also used in important ceremonies throughout the human life-cycle. This cultural richness can be integrated into BIPA (Indonesian for Foreign Speakers) learning. This study aims to design a strategy for integrating Javanese life-cycle batik into BIPA learning with portfolio writing models. This study employs a descriptive research approach with a qualitative focus. Data for this study was collected through observations at a reputable cultural museum, interviews with guides, documentation of batik motifs and literature on Javanese life-cycle batik. To ensure the validity and credibility of the data, triangulation techniques were employed. The results indicate that the life-cycle batik comprises 16 motifs used in seven traditional ceremonies marking stages of the human life-cycle. This diversity of life-cycle batik can be integrated into BIPA teaching materials using Notion as the medium. These materials cover vocabularies (40 words), as well as listening, speaking, reading and writing, and Indonesian cultural awareness. This study contributes to the development of alternative BIPA teaching materials that integrate culture. Integrating Javanese batik motifs representing the life-cycle into BIPA learning could enhance cross-cultural understanding and contextual language skills.

Abstract

Integrating cultural identity into Bahasa Indonesia for Penutur Asing (BIPA) pedagogy often prioritizes content enrichment over discursive and ideological engagement. This study addresses this limitation by investigating how cultural identity is constructed, depicted, and facilitated through Augmented Reality (AR) within learning materials derived from Cirebon's historical landscape for Thai learners. Employing Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) alongside design-based research, the study scrutinizes pedagogical designs, instructional texts, visual representations, and learner feedback to identify prevailing identity discourses embedded within the technology. Results indicate that Cirebon's cultural identity is predominantly portrayed through harmonious, heritage-focused narratives emphasizing tradition and historical continuity, whereas alternative or contested identities receive minimal representation. Consequently, AR functions not merely as a technological tool but also as a semiotic mechanism that validates specific cultural interpretations and pedagogical ideologies. The study argues that AR-enhanced BIPA materials function as ideological frameworks that significantly shape learners' perceptions of Indonesian cultural identity. This research advances BIPA instruction beyond technological augmentation, advocating for critical language education that acknowledges technology's role in perpetuating cultural ideologies. It highlights the need for educators to examine how digital media shapes learners' cultural understanding critically. Future research should conduct comparative discourse analyses across diverse cultural contexts and investigate learner resistance and reinterpretation of these narratives. By examining the intersection of technology, discourse, and identity, this study contributes to a nuanced understanding of digital pedagogy in language learning, ensuring that cultural representation remains critical rather than superficial.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of characterization in the folk tale “Singa Perbangsa” from Karawang Regency in improving the understanding of adjectives for foreign speakers learning Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA). This study also focuses on understanding the moral and cultural values contained in the story, such as wise leadership, courage and responsibility, justice and unity, as well as local wisdom and love for the country. The method used is a quasi-experimental design with two groups, namely the experimental group who learned through folk tale texts and the control group who used general narrative texts. The research subjects consisted of 24 foreign students enrolled in the BIPA program at the Indonesia University of Education. The instruments used included an adjective ability test, observation sheets, and a learning interest questionnaire. The results showed a significant increase in adjective comprehension in the experimental group (p < 0.05) with an average increase of 30%, compared to the control group, which only increased by 12%. Qualitative analysis showed that the character Singa Perbangsa helped learners understand the use of adjectives in concrete moral and social contexts. This story also served as a means of cultural diplomacy, introducing the noble values of the Karawang community to the international community.
